While the iPhone 17 lineup is still around seven months away from launching, rumors about the devices continue to surface.

The latest word comes from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his Power On newsletter over the weekend, he said that Apple plans to emphasize the iPhone 17 Pro's improved video recording capabilities when it unveils the device later this year, although he did not reveal any specific new features that may be coming.

Here is what he said:
In past years, Apple has focused more heavily on the camera's photo-taking abilities. This year it will stress improvements to video recording. One of the goals for 2025's iPhone line is to get the vlogging community and other video creators to move away from standalone cameras and use the iPhone for even more of their work. Look for Apple to more heavily than ever tout these video recording capabilities when the new iPhones debut in September.
Video recording capabilities already added to iPhones over the years include an Action mode for stabilization, Cinematic mode for shallow depth-of-field, and more.

Multiple sources have claimed that the iPhone 17 Pro models will feature a redesigned rear camera system. An alleged render of the iPhone 17 Pro revealed that the back of the device will supposedly have a large rectangular camera bar with rounded corners. The device is expected to have three 48-megapixel rear cameras.

Gurman's newsletter also reiterated that Apple plans to launch its first foldable iPhone in 2026.

As long as Apple doesn’t sell an 8K monitor to edit 8K video on, they won’t release an 8K video-capable camera… me thinks 🤔

Guess along with Gurman once again.
What a fun game.

I don't know why Apple even bother with product launch videos anymore - just post a link to MacRumours and tell people to look there as they have been reporting it as a fact for at least 7 months before release.
Come September there are no surprises left.

Sorry, but that "new design" is ugly. Just taking the camera bump, and making it the full width of the phone is not what I would call a new design.

I am sure it will have all sorts of new AI powered video features, but that design is just bad.

I didn't realize this is something they need to highlight.

This isn't the early 90s with someone's dad holding a camera on their shoulder filming people.

I think if they do something with the 8K video recording, like they did with the 120fps video recording, then it could work. You record in 8K and then after the fact you can zoom in and out on two different people. The final video is then exported in 4k. It would be equivalent of speed-ramping with high frame rate. I really hope for that

Impossible from iPhone 16 Pro gap to 17 Pro to make people replaced their DSLR Cameras with the iPhone? That’s just sounds insane, unless Apple is planning to price the iPhone 17 Pro Max at stating price $3200 then yeah but I don’t see it happening ain’t no way.

4 years ago, the hot & heavy rumor was the next iPhone would go 48-megapixel cameras and bring 8K... just like select Samsung phones have been shooting since 2020. Here comes another 48-megapixel camera.

Interesting aside: the rumor about the new AppleTV has it launching in late Fall. If this year is when iPhone finally offers 8K capture, would AppleTV 8K finally hit too? Historically, I think it has been iPhone adopts new higher resolution, then some iPads and then AppleTV but nothing has to be married to any "pattern" perceived in only a couple of iterations.

Now before there are about 50-100 posts ripping 8K capability:
  • No, no one has to buy 8K TVs just like no one has to buy Vpro even though their phones can shoot spatial. Get it and enjoy it if you want or keep shooting 4K or 1080p or SD if you like.
  • No, an AppleTV capable of 8K resolution isn't limited to only 8K TVs just as one can hook AppleTV 4K to 1080p or 720p TVs and it works just fine at those resolutions. Greater hardware capabilities scales down to lower resolution devices with no issues at all.
  • If "no one can see the difference" is believed to be true, opt to not waste your recording quality at a resolution choice "no one can see": just keep shooting however you like. This is akin to not shooting spatial video you never intend to see.
  • No, the entire internet does not have to be upgraded everywhere for 8K video. Those fine with 4K or 1080p or SD can keep consuming/streaming video however they do now.
  • No, "until everything in the store is available in 8K" doesn't have to be a hinderance either... just as everything in the store is not available in 4K and some is not available in 1080p. Progress the hardware and let the software optionally catch up to push the hardware. Else, better hardware capability has no issue working with lower standards.
And on and on. There's a standard mix of rejection of a new resolution at every resolution tier. Most of the same was said about 4K before Apple embraced 4K and about 1080p while Apple still clung to 720p. 8K gets the very same arguments against it... which- just like the former hops- will immediately evaporate as soon as Apple embraces 8K. In other words, the crowd about to have all kinds of faults with the idea of 8K video capture will not fault Apple with the same points once Apple embraces it... 8K only makes no sense while Apple is not yet offering the option... YET.

I agree. As it appears now, its form over function. I don’t see any reason to elongate it other than for change sake. Maybe there is more to the design that will be revealed. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

8K is useful for cropping/reframing/rotating the picture in post, without loss of detail for a 4K target.
This is exactly what needs to be implemented for iphone. The final video could always export and be viewed in 4k but you can zoom in and out on different subjects without loss of resolution.
