Yeah with worse quality than Apple's 4k.

What an absolute load of crap. Stop with your blind hate for one company and blind loyalty to another. You want your brand of choice to be better, then stop glazing it and start getting critical of what that company offers you for your hard earned cash. I'll say it again, the Android industry is where all the innovation is because people that buy Android phones have a wide choice, and when there's choice there's competition that inevitably leads to innovation.

It doesn't matter if we're talking about phones or computers. Apple already uses the name, so it makes sense they'd combine all devices into the same naming scheme.
I guess you didn't read the entire post of mine? They use the name Ultra for a device that has an ULTRA chip in it. Your point is pointless.

The best thing about the upcoming iPhone is that it will expose all the blind loyalists. Those people that went on and on of how meticulous and classy Apple is with design. How Android phones are so clumsy with cluttered and gaudy design features and camera layouts that serve no function. Let's see who calls this new design premium. A design with the same camera layout, but now on a big hideous rectangular island that stretches across the whole back of the phone that serves no purpose. A design that even a cheap Chinese knockoff would be offended by. I'll never understand the blind loyalist and apologist of any company. At what point in your life do you finally look at a product and ask yourself, WTF?

This will have pretty limited use at smartphone sensor size, there's only so much you can do in compute right now. But it may be handy for hobbyist level youtube vloggers to do a punch in between two people etc.

For most people, 4K at much higher bitrate would look better.

Now, are we still going to get this firehose of data off USB 2.0 speed trickles on the 17?

I'm not a big fan of the new camera bump design either, but there are already several relatively high end Android phones that look like this, including Google's own Pixel phones, not just low end Chinese Android phones.

8K video cropped or downsampled to 4K is great stuff. That's where the real magic is here.

Instead of having to switch cameras just shoot video with the 8K camera and then digital zoom later. You'll still get a 4K video without introducing artifacts.

Or you can just set the iPhone to shoot at 4K. That's a reasonable balance between quality and convenience for many people.

The big difference with the Pixel and other phones that have an island across the back of the phone is that they were designed that way from the start. The cameras on the Pixel are inline with the island and look very streamline. The island on the new iPhone is nothing like that. They took an existing camera layout, and then just stretched out an island for no reason at all. The camera layout is the same. There was zero reason to do this. Even if they had a small screen in the big black void, it still will be pointless because of the size of the screen size that would fit in that space would be useless. You could even put an led notification in there, and again pointless as that would mean laying your phone on the display all the time. Nobody does this. The LED notification is also a feature you could add to the front display if you really wanted to bring that back. Android phones already do this to take advantage of the AMOLED display. It all comes back to the huge island being pointless and making a change for the sake of change. I have no doubt the loyalist and apologist will still spin it in some way to make it look like this hideous thing has a purpose.

If Apple put 8k recording into the iPhone 17 Pro then I can’t see them putting 12gb ram into the 17 pro models
Especially if they are also potentially upgrading the other camera lens to a 48mp
You mean they will put more ram or you think they can’t absorb the cost? If it’s the latter then I assure you they can. 4 gigs of ram cost Pennys

Easy there, hotshot! That's a whole lot of assumptions you came up with after one simple statement. How about you don't let other people's opinions on the internet rustle your jimmies that easily? Good luck with that!

WWDC25 - Apple announces full 8k video support/editing with advanced features in iOS 19*
*arriving later this coming year.

September 2025 - Apple announces iPhone 17 Pro with 8k recording

March 2026 - iOS feature update delay. 8k recording still not functioning.

September 2026 - Apple announces iPhone 18 Pro with improved 8k

November 2026 - iOS 20.1 released finally enabling 8k recording for the first time on any iPhone. iPhone 17 pro gets update too but with severely crippled 8k capability.

A few years ago this would have been total satire. Now…. It’s almost believable 🤦‍♂️

No it’s not that
I really can’t see Apple changing the design
Upgrading the other camera lens to 48mp
Implementing 8K recording
Upgrading front camera to 24mp
To also upgrade the ram to 12gb
As well as upgrading chip’s & aperture as well
There is no chance they will do that for the 17 pro models because then there will be nothing for the 18’s

I think you’re being a little too skeptical. I don’t believe the 17 Pro’s 8K recording capabilities will be crippled based on the significant hardware upgrades coming. Of course, it’s another matter how meaningful it will be to have the 8K recording option to most users. I suspect most people, myself included, will continue to record at 4K.

I'd actually be curious if that extra depth across that rectangular bar serves a purpose inside the device, like for an under-screen Face ID & front camera or a much smaller dynamic island. Maybe those features aren't there initially in this redesign, but maybe next year's phone.

I think this will be the year where they raise the price of the regular pro to $1099 along with 256gb as a minimum.

Given this rumor about 8K video recording and the replies fretting about the heat, maybe the bar is metal to help serve as a heat sink? Not sure if it would be night and day, but given that the front and the remainder of the back must be glass for the screen and inductive charging, this would be a valid excuse for a functional change.

8K 15FPS - 17 Pro
8K - 30FPS - 18 Pro
8K - 60FPS - 20
8K 15fps would be useless. No way they do that. Has to be at least 24fps.

If Apple is going to go 8K, they have to go the full mile. No Mickey Mouse job.

8K/60fps, Dolby Vision ProRes with LOG support. That will 100% require 12GB+ of RAM, serious battery life, Insane SoC and 2TB/4TB storage option.
They should, but: wouldn't be surprised if they limit this phone to 8K 24 or 30fps. That saves something for next year's 18 Pro :)

Oh, and P.S. everyone: it's clear the camera bump is some kind of mirror or indicator to take selfies with. This would help the Vlogging community immensely.
