⚠️⚠️⚠️COMPLETE MISUNDERSTANDING!
The original weibo post should be translated to "you shall look forward to iphone 17s with 8k(CNY,~1000USD) in hand"

It is not clear why Apple would use this design, nor what the extra space would be used for, but it has shown up several times now.
I thought it was pretty clear that this is where the periscope camera system was going to be housed?

In this context, “8K” is internet slang in Chinese, not referring to 8K resolution.

Here, “8K” = 八千 = ¥8000 RMB, which is roughly $1100–$1200 USD.

So when the author says:

“手持 8k 的你,iPhone17 系列 理应多期待”

They mean:

“If you’re someone who’s holding onto a phone worth ¥8000 (or paid that much), you should definitely look forward to the iPhone 17 series.”

It's a playful way to refer to people who are already used to paying high prices for phones, implying they’d be interested in the next premium model.

 Wow. Thanks for the insight. Major mistranslation!

BTW, as of today, ¥8000 RMB is $1101 USD. If that is the price for the iPhone 17 Pro (not Max), then that would mean a price increase of US$100 to $1099, and it would also likely be accompanied by a base storage upgrade to 256 GB. (They raised the price on the base 15 Pro Max by $100 to $1199, but it started at 256 GB. The base 14 Pro Max was $1099 with 128 GB.)

I’d like to see the extra processing to also be used to provide more slo mo options like 8x, 16x options, 4K and pro raw. Also pip shooting of front and back camera at the same time.

Any chance Apple plays games with RAM the way the do with the iPad Pro? 8GB of RAM for 256/512 and 12GB of RAM for 1TB and likely 2TB model?
I really can’t see them doing that because people generally keep hold of their iPads for years.

If they did that with iPhones then more people would keep hold of them for longer than Apple as a company wants you too
Because if for example Apple released a 12gb iPhone this year then that iPhone would be able to easily handle the the OS for many years down the line & it would ultimately be harder to upsell you earlier than you want
That’s why all the things that are apparently rumored like 12gb & 8k recording & new design & upgraded 48 lens won’t all happen

8k is completely useless for the average customer. Most will still use 1080p 30fps for video recording.

4K 60FPS already almost takes half a GB per minute! I have 3000 GB of iCloud storage already because I always uploaded all the digital photos and videos I ever made into the cloud starting from 2001. I have a 77" OLED TV and honestly can't see much difference between a 1080p and a 4k stream.

It just doesn't make sense... HDR is much more important than higher and higher resolutions!

iPhones are using a 48MP sensor right now just to dumb the picture down to 24MP. Which is still a marketing scam to me. I won't be fooled by marketing anymore! Guys, come on! Use your common sense!

yes you are right about the average consumer not needing 8k but that’s not what it’s about
It’s about Apple’s competition & how they are looking in comparison

because regardless of how you personally feel it’s more to do with for example high end Samsung phones offering things like that & customers thinking they offer the better product because it looks like it offers something better

MacRumors has updated the article to acknowledge the mistranslation.

So you want more capabilities than the latest Sony A1, which costs $6500...

How much would you like this to cost?

On a serious note - I'm curious how much difference 8K is going to make without requiring much larger glass. I mean, I think it is impressive that we can shrink pixels and sensors...but at some point, it is about physics and light. And once Apple's processing starts to play with the footage...most will be better off with 4K?

I'm also curious whether people will be able to tell the difference between 8K footage shot on an iPhone versus 4K converted to 8K with an app like Topaz Video AI.

Again, I love the enthusiasm...but these are phones.

To be fair, Samsung was able to get 8K/30 on the S22 Ultra with a 200 MP Wide camera, 10 MP Telephoto, 10 MP periscope telephoto and 12 MP ultrawide back in 2023. [Which cost $1,599 USD for the 1TB model].

I can see Apple doing 8K/30 for $1,700.

To be honest, 4K/60 ProRes is the standard that 95% of video professions will take advantage of. The remaining 95% who take 8K videos currently will take advantage.

As far as whether people will be able to tell the difference, no. Unless they have a Samsung, LG, Sony 8K TV then yes. 100% of the time it will be upscaled 8K when viewing on a iPhone, Mac or iPad.

Yeah I agree with the last point especially. Apple always seem to trickle out features. However, iPhone sales are down as is enthusiasm: “Sales for the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro have shown a decline compared to previous years, with reports indicating lower demand and slower sales growth than expected. This trend reflects a broader pattern of diminishing enthusiasm for new iPhone models among consumers”

Everyone talks crap about Samsung hardware but if Apple added some of the camera hardware, added their own version of a pencil/stylus, added some of the software tricks, like true split screen multitasking, it would drive up some enthusiasm. But when the iPhone looks the same since roughly 2019, and is just an iterative update YoY, Apple needs to do something. So I see adding a bunch of features more likely than not.

Apple could easily upgrade their hardware to be top of the range & go toe to toe with the Samsung s25 ultra but Apple won’t do it because in their eyes they don’t have to.

It’s the exact same argument with the software they could easily do all that but chose not too

Because fundamentally there is a difference Samsung needs to put everything into their flagship to convince people to buy their product unlike Apple’s as most time they purchase their iPhones regardless
So that’s how Apple can get away with drip feeding out things like that & hold em back

I think you’re being a little too skeptical…. Of course, it’s another matter how meaningful it will be to have the 8K recording option to most users.
Not skeptical, it’s just satire. I agree though the feature is too niche and in my view pointless. The 8k TV market is so tiny and sales shrank 35% and 45% in 2023 and 2024 with Omdia forecasting even bigger drops through 2026. It’s basically a dead market. So who is this upgrade for? Only reason I see is Apple Vision, which is probably even a tinier market than 8k TV’s.

I’d take better photo and 4k performance any day of the week over 8k. Larger sensor pixel size for better low light, faster readout, improved focus, variable aperture, lens improvements (especially flare and ghosting), slow motion stuck on 240fps since iphone 6 and drop frame issues on 14/15 pro amongst others. So many things could be improved and more beneficial for users. Unfortunately marketing runs the show and 8k sounds cool. Just like using the Ai buzzword in everything right now. Ai ricecookers and toasters… please 🤦‍♂️

So now you are saying that the only useful feature that so far is rumored about the iphone 17 Pro is actually not a real rumor, just a translation mistake… oh my… i really need that 8K video to zoom into those Interviews that i am recording. That Google Pixel 10 with GrapheneOS seems to be more plausible every day…

8K is for anyone who wants to zoom in in post. It’s a great handy feature to be able to film two people talking and then focus in on one or the other after the fact. It helps generating great content. Final export is in 4k. No one is talking about 8K tvs but 8K zoom in post is a very common thing that people who shot video are doing. A Pro phone should support that feature. Especially if it costs almost 2k usd with taxes, apple care and reasonable storage.

No it’s not that
I really can’t see Apple changing the design
Upgrading the other camera lens to 48mp
Implementing 8K recording
Upgrading front camera to 24mp
To also upgrade the ram to 12gb
As well as upgrading chip’s & aperture as well
There is no chance they will do that for the 17 pro models because then there will be nothing for the 18’s
That’s what competition does. If it weren’t for all the AI players we would still have 8 gbs of memory.

Apple as a company will not put all that rumored technology into the iPhone 17 pro max
Because then they will have nothing for the next models

I think now that people re waking up that apple intelligence was just a marketing gag, they have to give people more than just some software promises that could run on old hardware as well, if their coders would just be a bit more competent.

I actually think Samsung have actually improved their flagship phones
From software wise including actual proper OS updates to the technology in their phones compared with years ago & the software called touch wiz
I believe it’s good if Samsung make very good products because then it should force Apple to actually make improvements to their mobile’s & software going forward

True, i hope Google Pixel Phones can catch up with apple and Samsung and get more market share in the US. It would be good to have a third quality phone manufacturer in the US. Pixel phones have the advantage over Apple and Samsung that you can install privacy focused OSs on them. I am eyeing with GrapheneOS. I hope Pixel 10 will be everything an iphone can be and more. Once people will open their eyes and leave apple due to lack of innovation, Apple’s products will have to be more innovative again.
