While technically true, it's hard to compare because the 16 Pro, like the 15 Pro, had a 5x lens that was 12MP? Which is what the 8x is offering on the 17 Pro. Personally, and I know opinions will vary, I would take 4x at 48MP that offers 8x at 12MP over just 5x at 12MP.
The default output for the new 4X 48MP telephoto is 12MP photos. The new sensor is slightly larger so I think at 5X the quality will be about the same as the 16 pro. Obviously will be much better at 4X

Yes they did lie. That being said the new sensor is larger and has more megapixels, so even if it is not optical, the digital 8x zoom should still give an image which in quality is equivalent or better than the 5x zoom iPhone 16 pro max.
Lie is a strong word here, but let’s just say they have been “flexible” with their descriptions for marketing purposes, and in my opinion a bit too flexible and in the “not right” area.

100% true that the optional zooms on the 17 pro’s are 0.5X, 1X and 4X.

2X and 8X are digital crops, and don’t offer the same clarity as true optical zooms, in sensor performance nor in lens opital quality (digital crops are much more demanding of lens quality).

Apple should be saying the 2X and 8X are digital crops, sugaring it up with “offering full optical quality” if they want

The 48MP telephoto lens at 4x and 8x will both export at 12MP? That just gives to me more reason to say it is an improvement over the 15 Pro and 16 Pro then, as that just gave 5x at 12MP and this is giving 4x and 8x at 12MP. If there is any way for the default to be changed or other camera app providers to utilise the 48MP lens, even better!

Who needs 2TB of memory in a mobile device?

Everything is in the cloud.

Was using 128GB until 2024 and upgraded to 256GB in 2024.

It's more than enough for me and I am a digital artist, designer, photographer, gamer, blogger, influencer, visionary, mountain guide and quality assurance manager.

If you take a lot of photos and videos, and don’t have a great cell connection to upload to iCloud. Then you will have a problem with 256gb.

It will default output to 12MP yes, however you will be able to shoot 48MP at 4X using ProRaw or 3rd party.

The output at 4X and 8X+ will likely be better on the 17 Pro’s, however at 5X it is likely the 16pro will still be better.

It is definitely an improvement in the telephoto camera but I wouldn’t upgrade just for that. I am upgrading from the 15 pro so I get an upgraded ultra wide AND upgraded telephoto so it starts to stack up for me. I wouldn’t upgrade to the 17 pro if I already had the 16 pro, not enough there IMO

Better to buy the 256GB model and spend the money on external SSD’s if you take lots of photos and video IMO.

I would never buy 2TB iPhone now external SSD’s work well, you can use those external SSD’s on future iPhones and other tasks as well

I couldn’t justify 2 grand for the phone either. But to pad my self a little, I think 512 is the sweet spot. I don’t have to carry extra things with me. Ever. I can freely take as many pictures and videos I want.

so the pro max screen is actually higher resolution (more pixels ) than the pro screen. The pixels/per mm is still the same at 460ppi. Obviously the display is scaled for the UI so things look bigger, and UI elements will use slightly more pixels. But does this affect things like photo viewing or video viewing ? Is the whole interface scaled including any media that is displayed?

also, are the speakers in the pro the same as the pro max or does the pro max get more bigger speakers ? and does the size of the actual phone enclosure it self affect the sound that the speakers make ?

Is the screen on the max the same brightness as the pro

I have a 13 ProMax and my wife has a base 12. I like to pick hers up and pretend I’m a giant!

One other likely difference considering the huge focus on thermals for the Pros this year is that the Max will probably have better thermal performance vs the Pro. More room to spread the heat around, and bigger vapor chamber, etc.

If the sensor size was small, say about exactly the size of the '12 mp crop' of the 48mp sensor. Then would you consider it to be an optical 2x image or not? Nothing has changed, only the area that the image circle lands on. So on that basis then there's no difference between a digicrop and optical ?

Does it actually have a bigger vapour chamber ? This so called article about the differences is very low on actually listing the differences. Is the ONLY difference the size of the screen and battery ? Everything else is the same ? So internals, are interchangeable ? Vapour chamber is same size ? Speakers are same size and response ?

"optical-quality zoom". 😂

high end mirrorless / DSLR cameras do this exact thing except they call it 'crop mode' which typicaly takes an APS-C sized bit of the full frame sensor and uses that so you get a reduced megapixel image but the effect of a smaller FOV, exactly the same as what apple are doing here. There is no scaling, interpolation or zooming in either implementations.

Help me understand. Why is the iPhone 17 Pro’s screen smaller than the iPhone Air? You’d think that the Pro model’s screen would be at least as big.

The smaller Pro models have always been Medium sized screens (5.8", 6.1" and now 6.3").

Sure but if the iPhone Air is supposed to be a step behind the Pro, you’d think the display for the Pro would then be just as large.

Agreed. There is a place for 2Tb phones such as those who take a lot of videos and photos throughout the day.
