Why not just make the whole phone thicker? Before, the camera bump didn't take too much space on the back. Now, according to this, it will do. So just make the phone thicker so the cameras are flush, like they used to be, and use that extra thickness at the bottom of the camera for battery
Because this will also make the phone heavier.

It's so funny this happens here every year...

A render/rumor gets posted

Macrumors users:
There is no way Apple would make this.. it looks horrible... this will definitely not be it!

iPhone release date: exactly as the renders/rumors showed

The same Macrumors users who called it horrible: In the "waiting for my phone to be delivered" thread..... I'm so excited can't wait for my phone to arrive... Where is this damn UPS driver!!!

*And for the record I have been guilty of doing this as well... So I am making fun of myself here too
Like clockwork

I can't wait for the mockups of the next generation. If they make as much sense as this one it'll probably be an ad for thinnest iPhone ever - now with a "camera bump" that takes the entire back side of the phone, making it 1cm thick in total. But the "phone" under that bump is only 3mm!

Anyway, nothing in that mockup makes sense. I feel sorru for MacRumors staff if they fall for this garbage.

What purpose such a screen would serve now that they can just use the always on front screen?

Only useful thing I can think of is framing screen for using the high quality camera array for selfies. That would be cool and could even be implemented in a way that would be completely hidden: just showing outlines of the people in frame on matte glass.
I’m sure the inventors of the Dynamic Island can think of a gimmick. It’d also be laying the groundwork for the design of a foldable phone.

what about a flush or no camera? Im not in the market for a pro camera every time and no the non-Pro lines aren't alternatives
But when you buy a Pro iPhone, getting Pro features like a Pro camera is kind of part of the deal. A smartphone without a camera could never be labeled "Pro" regardless of whatever else it contains--it would always be relegated to the lineup's lowest tier.

I don’t think anyone will have a problem with that, if their phone lasts longer. Many people carry an extra battery
It's true that if an iPhone were made as thick as the camera bump to eliminate the bump, and to accomodate a larger battery, a lot of people would be fine with the increase in weight and bulk, but you'd hear no end of people complaining about how thick and heavy it is, to the point where they'd drown out (at least on user forums) the people who say they like it. If Apple were to make such a thick phone, they'd probably still make the thinner models with the camera bump, but a lot of people would still complain about the thick, heavy model even if they didn't own it.

Apple's next-generation iPhone 17 Pro will feature three rear cameras arranged in a familiar triangular layout, but the cameras will be housed in an all-new rectangular camera bar with rounded corners, according to YouTube channel Front Page Tech.

iPhone 17 Pro camera design render created by Asher for Front Page Tech

In a video uploaded today, Front Page Tech host Jon Prosser said the camera bar will be considerably larger than many earlier concepts circulating online have showed. The camera lenses are positioned on the left side of the bar, while an LED flash, a rear microphone, and the LiDAR Scanner are lined up vertically on the right side.

Prosser said the iPhone 17 Pro features a two-tone finish, with the camera bar appearing to be darker than the rest of the rear shell.

It is unclear if this alleged design change has any benefits, or if it is purely for aesthetics.

Prosser said his information is based on multiple sources familiar with the iPhone 17 Pro's design, and he said that he has seen the device himself.

The redesigned camera array would presumably extend to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, but Prosser did not confirm that. The ultra-thin "iPhone 17 Air" is also rumored to feature a rear camera bar, but with only a single camera. It is not clear if the camera bar will extend to the lowest-end iPhone 17 model, but it seems likely for consistency.

Google's Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro also have a rear camera bar, but the lenses are arranged in a horizontal line rather than triangularly.

Prosser has been a well-known tech YouTuber for more than a decade. Like most sources, he has a mixed track record with Apple rumors, with some hits and some misses. In 2020, he was the first source to reveal the design of the AirTag, many months before it was announced. He also shared many accurate details about the iPad mini 6, months before that device was announced. On the other hand, he and others were wrong about the Apple Watch Series 7 having flat edges, although perhaps Apple tested such a design.

Prosser recently claimed that iOS 19 will introduce a redesigned Camera app with a visionOS-like design, including translucent menus and buttons.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series in September, and additional design-related rumors will likely surface before then.

Great to add shade whenever you take photos with flash.

ok...it can be and option or not like any pro Apple device

It's a render by someone completely unaffiliated with Apple. Why is anyone taking it seriously? The rage from some over this is funny in a sad way. Words like disgusting, hideous, repulsive to describe this are drama based babble.

I want the possibility to customize the phone, in both size and cameras.
From the smallest mini with less add-ons, to the largest 'iPad mini size' with super-lenses for photographers.
How hard can it be, this is how we order our Mac's.
Makes no business sense. Absolutely none.

This is really really hideous. Surely Apple won't release this? Looks like a poor pixel knockoff.
This is what hideous looks like and it bears no resemblance to what is being called hideous on this thread.

I think an L configuration for the lens with the flash etc in the 4th corner makes more sense, so that the right half of the bump could be a mini square touch screen.

Samsung's had an exterior mini screen for a while and I imagine it's not useless. Presumably it makes selfies using the back cameras easier since you get a (mini) viewfinder.

Personally I always put my phone down face up, so not sure what this would do for me.

I rarely comment here, but just wanted to say how incredibly ugly this is. No way people are going to buy this, Apple should know this after running focus groups.

These weird iPhone 17 design change rumors (potentially no titanium, mixed metals, wide camera bump) that have been out for a while are a big reason why I upgraded to the iPhone pro max 16. I had an iPhone 14 Pro Max and didn’t need to upgrade, but I really like the 16 PM design with smooth titanium and desert sand color. I didn’t want to miss out on the titanium model and be annoyed to have missed the 16 PM if the 17 PM design lost titanium and was ugly. I’m very pleased compared to the 14 PM, it’s noticeably lighter, the edges are smoother and more comfortable to hold, the titanium doesn’t show fingerprints like the stainless 14 PM, noticeably smaller bezels, prefer the color, so I’m happy I upgraded and shouldn’t need to upgrade for a number of years.
That said, in the end, Apple usually doesn’t disappoint and each design iteration usually is more refined than the past and is a design evolution overall. Of course it’s all subjective and everyone has their preferences, but honestly, have they really made anything really terribly ugly in the end? I’m guessing it will be the same with the 17 design changes. If it does look like this there probably is a reason like some have said like a display or something. If it’s not nice looking overall, it’s a stepping stone and the following iteration’s refinements will probably look much better.

I am sorry but Jon Prosser is way off base. The iPhone slim is meant to replace the lacklustre Plus. The tri camera is reserved for only pro models, multiple rumours suggest a single camera lens at the rear.

I think we need to consider the back glass in all off this. I don't think those thin upper corners of the back glass will make it into production. If the phone is laid out like this, expect it to be all metal around the "camera bar" and glass below.

"Whatever, as long as it's super wobbly when placed on flat surface" -- Apple, apparently

I've been thinking about upgrading my 13PM since I find myself using the phone outside more and 1200 vs 2000 nits would be a welcome upgrade. My thought was maybe wait for the 17PM but between the camera bar and going back to an aluminum frame I think I might just go with the 16PM.
