They could put the flash and LIDAR right alongside the lenses and use the right half of the bar as a small info screen...

It would make more sense than the current design, and be much more of an Apple thing to do.

What purpose such a screen would serve now that they can just use the always on front screen?

Only useful thing I can think of is framing screen for using the high quality camera array for selfies. That would be cool and could even be implemented in a way that would be completely hidden: just showing outlines of the people in frame on matte glass.

OK so the problem is when you lay the phone flat it rocks - Been that way for years. So now you add a camera bar to equalize both sides. Then you extend the lenses STILL FARTHER and undo your work?

If done right though this would be the perfect way to include a periscope zoom lens.

This idea doesn't make any sense. Placing the flash away from the lens will only cast a shadow on the background of the objects being photographed. The further the flash is from the lens, the more visible the shadow will be. It is impossible to make such a mistake.
Isn’t this the standard for almost every DSLR/mirrorless though?

Good lord that is ugly, I preferred the mockup where the camera bump closely resembled the current Pixel Pro.

If using a flash with a dslr/mirrorless it's usually bounced or diffused in some way (bounced off a ceiling or wall, or diffused through a light modifier)- direct flash is hardly ever used for dslr as the results are never as good due to shadows and the source of light being a single point. It is generally only used if there is no alternative to get decent light, or for some particular artistic effect.

Phones use direct flash - the further it is from the lens, the bigger the shadows will be.

Make the camera bump even larger without changing the camera arrangement. Right…

I guess (if this is actually true) at least this means no more rocking on a flat surface.

But this screams the result of two different camps not being able to decide between a new camera bar like the pixel and the old camera array so they settle on an awful compromise.

I’m pretty much sure I want to upgrade this year. All these rumors have me worried. Is it bad that I’d kind of prefer Apple reuse the same old design for one more year if that means not messing up the year I want to buy a new phone? 🥲

Can't see this adds anything to the camera, the mockup is the current array, pushed to both sides. This is form without function, and with Apple's current design cue on the iPhones's, the extruding part would most likely keep the current style and if going full width, will be more compact without so much wasted space. Regarding lens alignment for use, like zooming accross all of them + spatial video/photo, I'm not sure which alignment benefits this feature the most, and most likely will be what controls the alignment of lenses in the future releases. Myself I wouldn't mind the current design, with additional lens with greater zoom than the current top — since the camera is the only reason for my own upgrades of an iPhone :)

2. It looks like the lenses still protrude, so the possibility that this was designed to stop the ‘wobble’ on desk, looks not true. I guess unless the angles…. In which all the ‘my iphone wobbles when i put it on a desk’ can now be shushed from whining. But they’ll probably complain now that corners are too sharp or something.
the pic is a mockup. if I made a mockup of the concept it would be to stop the wobble while also, as another poster said, help with FACEID recognition when the phone is laid flat.

We’ve heard comments like this before, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPhone 6 and iPhone X.

This new design is coming and I’m all for it, it’s disgusting that they’ve used the same design for 6 years. Pure greed, arrogance and laziness, low sales and mocking have forced their hands thankfully.
Lol greed and laziness? There aren't so many ways you can design a phone. Apple has been pretty incredible at designing hardware that still looks amazing 5, 10, 20 years later. Their designs are elegant, refined, and don't need to be refreshed for the sake of it. That would just be gimmicky.

What's the point of putting the LiDAR, Mic and flash all the way off to the side?
The only possibility I can think of is that’s the only spot they could place them. Maybe there’s something underneath that space in the middle like a larger sensor and maybe some additional component that will make this one of biggest iPhone camera upgrades ever? Optical sensor shift version 3 perhaps?

That is beyond hideous. and what on earth purpose could that serve?? Letting people know you have the new iphone is the ONLY reason I can think of. that is awful.
