iPhone 17e: Smaller Details You Might Have Missed

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 17e, with key upgrades over the iPhone 16e including the A19 chip, MagSafe, and the Ceramic Shield 2 for a more scratch-resistant screen. The device also has Apple's latest C1X modem for faster 5G, a doubled 256GB of base storage, and a new Soft Pink color option alongside White and Black.

In addition to those headline changes, we uncovered four smaller iPhone 17e details:

• A19 chip limitation: While the A19 chip in the iPhone 17 has a 5-core GPU, the chip has a reduced 4-core GPU in the iPhone 17e. This limitation will result in slightly slower graphics performance while gaming, but many customers are unlikely to notice a major difference in real-world usage. This is not a downgrade, either, as the A18 chip in the iPhone 16e also has a 4-core GPU.
  
• eSIM-only in more countries: iPhone 16e was eSIM-only in the U.S. only, but the iPhone 17e lacks a physical SIM card slot across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and the other countries and territories listed next to "Model A3575" of the iPhone 17e on Apple's cellular page.
  
• Same battery capacity: Like the iPhone 16e, the iPhone 17e has a 4,005 mAh battery capacity, according to a product label on Apple's website in the EU. Apple's advertised battery specs for the iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e are identical.
  
• Next-generation portraits: With next-generation portrait support, Apple says the "iPhone 17e recognizes people, dogs, and cats, and automatically saves depth information, allowing users to turn photos into beautiful portraits with background blur after capture and to adjust the focus point in the Photos app."

We are still working to confirm the amount of RAM included in the iPhone 17e, but it is very likely 8GB, matching the amount in the iPhone 16e and the regular iPhone 17. The next beta of Xcode 26.4 should confirm this information, so stay tuned.

In the U.S., the iPhone 17e starts at $599, just like the iPhone 16e did. You can pre-order the iPhone 17e on Apple.com starting Wednesday, March 4 at 6:15 a.m. Pacific Time, with availability set to begin Wednesday, March 11.

Once again I see people complaining about 60hz. If you want 120hz, get another phone, this isn't the phone for you.

$599 phone should have 120Hz period. There is no excuse to offer 60Hz display anymore. Apple can differentiate phone via other means.

Apple just put absolutely minimal effort for this update, just slap a new processor and MegSafe that should be included in iPhone 16e and call the day.

If one good thing came out of this, is that at least it starts with 256GB.

This thing at $599 is absolutely the worst deal (or $899 in Canadian). Compare with iPhone 17 or used iPhone 16 Pro or even now discontinued iPhone 16e (if you can find it cheaper) this iPhone 17e is absolutely not worth the price. Only get it at discount.

I got my iPhone 16e for like $150CAD used, paid $50 for unlock from T-Mobile. This was the absolute best deal ever.

Value for money is subjective but the 17 is better in every way. Screen is bigger, brighter and has a higher fresh rate, despite that battery life is better on the 17, front and back camera are better, gpu is better, 17e gets magsafe but slower charging speeds than the 17.

There is easily $200 in value in all that, the value step up from the 17e to the 17 is much bigger than the 17 to the 17pro imo.

17e is fine if you are very price sensitive, businesses will love this thing, also people buying a phone for elderly relatives who dont care about any of the bells and whistles.

Agreed! I'm not against eSIM but pSIM is still way too convenient and allows for quick switching between phones. My MVNO carrier charges after a couple of swaps.

Valid points. But if those features are not what many people need or want, it's a poor value. A decently good camera, excellent display (practically as big as the 17), 256gb storage. For the money that's where the value is in my opinion. I have a 16e and never missed MagSafe (though now included). It looks like the 17e will be a hot seller for these very reasons.

Maybe they should do a story about who predicted what and how confident they were about it, then see what was incorrect.

Looks like Chinese sources were predicting Dynamic Island, and Korean sources were predicting notch.

IDK what colour is TP in America, but in Europe, TP is typically the same colour as this 17e. I was JUST rewatching an episode of Grace and Frankie where one of the characters has an iPhone 8 in pink, and thinking "gosh that was so horrible". And then I saw the news about the 17e.

It’s so annoying. Yes eSIM is great, but it’s a mobile telephone after all. Connectivity is key. Nano sim should be there.

It depends, I'd prefer to have a choice, I haven't used a physical SIM in about 3 or 4 years, every phone we have at work is now on eSIM and switching to a new phone is easy, when I upgraded my 13 Pro to a 16 Pro, there was no fiddling around with SIM cards, iOS switched them over and activated the new one automatically, disabling the old one in the process. No PIN to remember, no digging out a PUK etc. it just worked.

And if it messes up, I just log onto my provider's portal with my account and activate a new eSIM, no waiting a couple of days for a new SIM in the post. A user left his company phone on the airplane. We remote wiped it and had a new phone set up with a new eSIM by the time he had arrived back from the airport.

All a comment like that shows is how little you understand about who does buy this sort of phone, or for that matter a pile of phones. Most normal people don’t know, don’t care about things like that. Sure on a forum like this people do because they all think they are technology experts and at the same time market experts

More countries having only eSIM is not surprising. Only a matter of time before eSIM only version expands globally. Highly likely that it will be 8 GB RAM. Don't think the lack of an extra core is going to create a difference in day to day usage.
