It's a corporate phone. Plenty of companies, including mine, only offer the 16e.

SE was the previously offered model. I still have my 2022 model until next year.

Cameras are what differentiates the cheap from premium models. No one gives a crap about the dynamic island.

Additionally, why do you care? How does a phone, that you don't own, having a feature affect you?
Someone too cheap to buy the premium model should not get premium features, including a great camera and Dynamic Island.

I have 16 Pro, but I'd personally prefer the notch. Dynamic island isn't "premium", it's just a different feature. There is nothing special about it.

I'm surprised they don't just do a single hole punch selfie camera on the front side and call it a day. Want the security of the TrueDepth camera system? Buy an iPhone 17. Otherwise you get what you get, and it doesn't cost a redesigned camera system nor some unique one off custom display panel.

Given the failure of the air, is it too much to hope for a repackaged 14 or 15 plus chassis, as well?

Especially given that even cheap android phones have had big screens for the last few years.

I wonder how many SE buyers actually appreciated either the smaller size, the home button, Touch ID, or the LCD screen. Apple dropped all that differentiation for the 16e. There’s still the differentiation of almost no camera bump and the notch, but that’s probably a smaller market, while they also hiked the price up.

All of the above for me! The lower pricing was a very nice bonus.

Mind, I can tolerate the size of the 15 Pro while the 17 is ever so slightly too large for my comfort. I can see myself going from the 17 to the 17e when that's released if it's 15 Pro size (which is similar to iPhone X) along with some weight reduction.

It’s not a failure. They merely scaled back production. There will be an 18 Air next year.
Oh I’m someone who is in the market for the iPhone air 1.0. But what we have now is the the iPhone air mvp. But if people who have it and are enjoying it that’s cool.

the 17e will fail so that the 16e can succeed at a new $499 price
I finally broke down and upgraded to 16e two weeks ago (still using 12 Mini). I have to wait six weeks for the unlocking to happen. Patience! My price ended up being $199 + 55 + 35 (two months service), or right around $300 with taxes. This is with StraightTalk / WalMart deal.
I had been holding out for a Pro Max, but the cost put me off. Mostly I wanted usb-c and the satellite SOS features. I figured it would be better to have the sos in my pocket, rather than waiting longer and dying on the side of the trail looking at "no service".
$300 for a dang nice new iPhone seems like a deal to me!

Though slimmer bezels are good, I would like to see dynamic island too. Not sure whether that will happen. Also would like to see more color options with the new device.
