I think people forget that Apple makes iPhones in MASSIVE quantities. If a new part becomes too expensive to make they usually drop the idea for financial reasons (for now). I think we may see that anti-reflective coating on the iPhone 18 models due in 2026.
I think people forget that Apple profit margins are so tiny, they have to squeeze every last drop out of it to keep the company surviving. Let's be honest, it's just another item on the Apple Incompetence list of the last couple of years. I mean those kind of displays are on the market since 2 years. That should be enough to scale for end of 2025.

"super scratch resistant anti-reflective display" for it to truly be something Apple would release they need to add max, ultra, pro, or another of their fluff words to the mix lol.

Having recently held a Samsung 25U and thinking the screen was amazing I was genuinely looking forward to seeing Apple put something like it on their 17 series.
Pretty bad it’s not coming. More AI promises instead no doubt. Maybe another useless camera button?

The Nokia Lumia 920 had a marvelous display (2012); you could use it even in bright sunlight, thanks to its ClearBlack technology featured in the flagship models. ClearBlack technology utilized polarizing filters layered within the display, significantly reducing reflections and improving contrast. This made the screen much easier to read outdoors, even under direct sunlight, giving Lumia devices a major advantage over many competitors at the time. It’s something I’ve been waiting to see matched ever since.

The Lumia 920 was a fantastic phone

man this would have been one of my biggest upgrades.

samsung has done anti-reflective screens since the S24 Ultra. Almost 2 years when the iPhone 17 launches.

disappointing that apple couldn't figure it out

Volume. It's not like they didn't "figure it out", but the process is too slow for the number of phones they gotta make.

I wonder how the sales numbers compare between the iPhone "Pro" and the Samsung "Ultra" models?

This. And on top of any manufacturing risk, the current tariff/trade situation will have added costs and uncertainties that make it a bad time to debut a significant new feature/part.

Apple could start off with low volume devices like a iPhone mini to get suppliers to build up their factories.

Wish they would try to do the Sapphire Crystal screen again somehow. I'm so careful with my iPhone (never put it in the same pocket as my keys, etc.) and it still has so many micro scratches.
