That hasn't been anything special for quite a long time now.

Maybe not, but that does not mean Apple doesn't still pay attention to it and consider it part of the experience. Personally, for me it was always a device in a box, and I didn't care if I ripped teh box open cause it's just getting tossed after I get the device out.

Shall we go down memory lane?

Disproportionate Markups on the Consumer:

Micron's leadership took direct aim at how Apple passes costs to consumers. Executives pointed out that while memory prices have indeed risen due to the AI infrastructure boom, Apple is disproportionately multiplying that cost. As one executive noted, if a chip price moves up slightly, Apple uses that as justification to mark up retail prices by hundreds of dollars to protect its own high margins.

While Apple no doubt makes huge margins on memory, especially upgrades, I think Micron is also trying to deflect attention to their price jumps as well by saying "See see, it's Apple's not our, fault..." while raking in the profits.

The unboxing experience, something Apple has been t for a long time. Notice how the setup bar has people open their own phones vs the Apple employee doing it?
The new experience will be going to the Apple Store to see all the new cases you can buy because the new iPhone is .3 mm thicker, keeping you from using your case from your iPhone 17 Pro. You can unbox the third party case because Apple Cases will be sold unboxed as well. Might as well buy a new Apple Watch while you are there, perhaps a new iPad or MacBook?

I'm on the iPhone Upgrade Program and upgrade every September. But if these numbers are accurate, price hikes to the iPhone are surely coming, and I just don't know that the rumored updates to the 18 Pro lineup are enough to convince me to increase my monthly payment by what will likely be a steep margin. My wife would kill me. Maybe I'll start upgrading every two years and trade in my old, paid off phone for credit towards the new shiny one. Lord knows that if the demand drops for these components and they get cheaper, we're not going to see price reductions whether from the suppliers or from Apple.

The base storage variant could be $200 more than the current 17 Pro/Pro Max model and higher storage versions could cost much more. Scary high prices!!

Time to move to a 2 year product roll out plan. If they increase prices more, then people won't upgrade as much.. use that time to make bigger improvements vs releasing a new one every year.

Also no way in hell apple faces cost increases like users.. they are totally using this as an opportunity to milk more money and will never lower prices again even if ram/storage/compute costs come down.

I can see apple removing the 2tb model and the 256 model… going up on the 512 by $100…
They will then come out some new icloud pricing/features and try to go more cloud storage..
May even have a new magsafe/storage solution coming out lol… wouldnt surprise me..

I’m not surprised. Apple’s huge margins must be protected at all costs otherwise shareholders will get sour and heads will roll. If they can use AI as an excuse to increase those margins significantly, why not. In more price sensitive markets like China, they can subsidize because their other markets will compensate.

Unless I go nuts and decide to get the Ultra this year, I will probably break my traditional annual upgrade and stick with my 17 Pro Max. I was tempted to keep it just because I like the Orange, but I won't pay significantly more to upgrade to a practically identical phone. Maybe I am finally becoming mature as my upgrades from the 15 Pro Max --> 16 Pro Max --> 17 Pro Max were all not necessary to begin with, though I have preferred the 17 Pro Max by a large margin. I have also considered buying a Pixel Pro this year to swap back and forth instead of upgrading.

I will also, for the very first time, break my traditional annual upgrade. But for me, I will go from the 17 base model to the 17 Pro Max. I wanted the 18 Pro Max, but my interest in it stopped when I heard it was gonna be too heavy and too expensive

Inflation is below 3%, and the Dow is above 50k. People need to stop complaining. In the 70s inflation was 10-12% and the Dow was at 618 - 1051. Next story.

Inflation is officially over 4% and clearly higher for some items more than others.

RAM and SSD prices are 2-3x higher than ~ 1 year ago which people in a tech forum are likely to care about similar to how people in a gearhead forum would likely care if gas reached $10/gallon.

At this point, the trade in value of my 14 Pro won’t even cover the price hike.
I'm still clinging to mine too, but the trade-in value is just insulting these days. I thought I'd get more than $250 or so for the old tank, but maybe I'm expecting too much. Hopefully it'll be worth enough in the future to at least cover tax on a new phone.

Who are you trading in with? Carriers will give you $1000 toward just about any trade.
