Next year's regular iPhone 18 will feature the smaller Dynamic Island rumored to be coming to the iPhone 18 Pro models this September, according to Chinese leaker Ice Universe, who has a decent track record for leaks.

In a new post on Weibo, the leaker said the smaller Dynamic Island will be adopted across the full iPhone 18 series, while the bezels on the next-generation devices will remain identical to those on the iPhone 17 series.

Going forward, Apple is planning a split-cycle launch strategy for the iPhone. Pro models will be announced in the coming fall season – likely alongside the company's first foldable iPhone – while the regular iPhone 18 will arrive early next year.

One leaker has cast doubt on reports that the iPhone 18 Pro models will have a narrower Dynamic Island, but most reports do support the claim.

Still don't understand the early in the new year philosophy for the iPhone 18 from a financial POV as Apple will miss the lucrative Christmas period for sales
Likely outweighed by those buying a Pro for Christmas because that’s the newer model. And for those who don’t care, they will also not care if the regular iPhone they buy was launched in March or September.

So, previously ALOT, I mean ALOT of people upgraded their devices for the black friday/Christmas rush. So this year, their contracts are done and they want new devices. 90 percent of these people are clueless as to what the differences between devices are. So when the time comes, they are chomping at the bit for a new phone and all that's available are the pros. Most will get them, some will think it's too expensive. the real losers are the sales people who will miss out on alot of potential sales of the upgrade cycle of the regular 18.

Pushes prospective buyers/upgraders to jump from base models to Pro "premium" models in pre-Christmas season as Christmas presents for themselves or others.

People are far more likely to "treat" themselves or others in the pre-Christmas season. People don't like waiting, and people feel less pressure to spend after Christmas, and are more likely to be "budget-conscious" in the first quarter of the new year.

So it's an "upsell" strategy. Heavily promote and market only your most expensive products at the time of year when people are most likely to spend the most money.

If even a tenth of all the rumor articles about a smaller island had come true it would right now defy physics and be a negative meter/yard in size, same with the bezels. Negative bezels making the display wider than the whole phone is wide.

I wish Macrumors had a reliability score assigned to rumor posts, making it possible to choose when you want to engage with the more fun and speculative posts, and when you just want the more reliable newsworthy ones.

I'm not saying that they're better or worse, just that they're different enough to warrant being in different categories.

And while I'm ranting: Please make the damn search function better. When I'm looking at buying something I like to check reviews and comments also here, and it's such a pain to do that that it's easier to use a web search and site:macrumors.com instead.

All of those are very good suggestions from the point of view of a site user.

Unfortunately, all these suggestions would reduce the amount of time and engagement users would have with the site as a whole, and so would reduce site revenue.

So I wouldn't expect any changes that makes it easier for the user to only engage with the information they want, and to get to that information more efficiently.

With that logic Apple should only release everything just before Christmas, right? It'd be a financial overload for people, and that'd cut into Apple's total sales.

The Pro people are more likely to want to rush their purchases, and chase the pre-Christmas deals, so it makes sense to put the lesser phone in between those cycles. It also helps them balance factory capacities better. Once the demand for the latest gen Pro models normalizes they can redirect capacity to another model, to even out the production throughout the year.

That capacity thing becomes even more relevant if the rumors are true that we're about to see Apple add more models, with both a Fold and an Ultra being talked about. They can't peak capacity for all of them at the same time in the year.

I'm probably one of the few people that think this, but I actually prefer bigger bezels. With my 16 Pro and now with the Air, the slim bezels make it harder to tap things right near the edges of the screen. Whether that be a key on the keyboard, something on an outer edge of a webpage or in an app, etc.

Unfortunately a reasonable logic. Macrumors isn't in the business of helping their users, only farm their attention to funnel it into something that creates profit. (No judging, it's just reality.)

That said, me personally, I probably spend less time than I otherwise would at Macrumors just because it's less rewarding to engage with than I feel is worth my time.

And they're straight up getting less of my attention (as well as page views and analytics data) when I have to use a third-party service to search for information here. And rn in 2026 that means that I'm more likely to get an AI summary from information at Macrumors than actually make a purchase from an affiliate link at Macrumors. So that quite substantially changes the math behind it being better business to not make the website more efficient and user-friendly.

Yep, I’m not saying I like this model of monetising websites, but it’s been the standard model of monetisation of website content for a long time. And all businesses have running costs, and so need to at least break even to be sustainable.

And your point about users shifting to A.I. is very true, a lot of business who do generate revenue from advertising and amassing tracker data are very, very nervous about how A.I. is delivering information to users without any “click-through” from the users - it kills those income streams.

But, for the foreseeable future, I think sites are just sucking up / putting up with the loss of revenue, and are upping the level of advertising and level of “clickbaitiness” to compensate, rather than actively trying to change their monetisation model.

Because just adding paywalls won’t retain users or add new users.

Don’t, you mean 18e?

Yes and also Apple might be hoping for strong foldable iPhone sales, which is rumoured to make it by Christmas.
