Am I in the small segment of people who dislike the pill cutout and miss the old notch cutout? Granted, Apple did a decent job with the “Dynamic Island” to make it less ugly, but I’d much rather have a smaller notch at the top. Having the bezel, usable screen, pill cutout, and screen in that order is just a waste of those pixels at the top. Videos now have a black hole in them. I understand the engineering limitations and sizes of FaceID. Just hoping they can shrink the hardware and give us more screen real estate back using the notch if they can’t go under-screen Face ID soon. If they can shrink the Dynamic Island, why not shrink it back to the bezel? Make it a dynamic notch… 🤷‍♂️

Same problem (potentially w/ the Mac laptops). The current notch cutout in Sequoia was largely unnoticeable, as they made the toolbar black to help hide it. In Tahoe that option is gone…makes no sense. Here’s hoping they don’t go to a pill cutout for the Mac too.

“No change in bezel size” is the least surprising news possible. They can’t make them any smaller. I already accidentally hit the edge of the screen all the time with my palm just from holding the phone one-handed. Really the bezels could stand to be slightly larger.

True. Maybe the coloured aluminium edge could be slightly thicker and over time the black bezels between the chassis and the display can be eliminated. For a seamless design without such usability concerns.

Do you ever get the opinion that Apple purposefully does things in slow increments? They just make each product slightly better than the last so that they don't run out of upgrades. They slowly tread towards a goal testing the market, gradually turning the screw to see what it will do to the wood it's being screwed into.

I've had money socked aside for years waiting to purchase something from Apple -something that's a game changer. The last game changer was Apple Silicon (sort of). I say that loosely because while Apple Silicon is a big upgrade in speed/ efficiency, with it came a lot of downgrades from intel (dual booting, running intel apps, etc). Apple silicon should allow you to run any native app on any device. We're slowly heading in that direction - iPhone mirroring on Mac, iPad apps on Mac, but what about pro, uncrippled Mac apps on iPad/ iPhone??

There were rumours of the "MacBook Ultra" with touch. An iPad-like device that runs MacOS apps? Yes please! NOPE, the MacBook Ultra is reported to have very basic touch capabilities, at least for now. Maybe in a few years. Hurry up and wait everyone!

The iPhone fold could be that two-in-one device that can be an iPad/ iPhone and creaseless! Imagine having an iPad that fits in your pocket. Hopefully like an iPad you can connect it to a monitor and use it like a computer. That would be a game-changer, and be worth the additional cost. NOPE! The iPhone fold still runs iOS and iOS apps more crippled than the iPad. The screen is still not 100% creaseless either. Apple needs to merge the OSes so that any device can run any app. It's more possible now than ever.

Well, I have to admit that the MacBook Neo is a bit of a game changer - but not for us power users, but for people who wouldn't buy a Mac because of the premium price. It doesn't change the game by giving us more capability or flexibility, actually it's a step backwards with streamlined features, but not for those who don't already have a Mac. So really, the Neo doesn't count.

It’s not now and has never been an issue of possibility—software execution at a fundamental level is not dependent upon the hardware specs, software performance is. More platform specificity allows developers to better optimize their applications. This matters because program execution uses power and generates heat. Not only does excessive power drain reduce portability and destroy device longevity, it also produces heat. The heat also worsens battery and application performance, but also presents a danger to the public. Desktops and laptops mitigate this with fans, surface area, and the expectation of a climate controlled environment. iPhone and to a lesser extent iPad, are engineered to make as few assumptions and requirements upon the user environment as possible. The separation of platforms forces developers to make their apps with consideration for the device characteristics. The meta narrative of room-sized computers miniaturizing into handheld devices is technically correct, but it’s an incomplete concept because the transition from semi-portable laptops to pocket-sized phones is a major paradigm shift for computer usage.

The whole Face ID should be under display; android phones have had a single circle cut out for camera for years and years, I understand it’s harder for the camera to go under the screen but come on since iPhone X we have had cut out and notches. Not cool

Because 2d Face ID is not the same as 3d Face ID.

Having the smaller dynamic island on the non Pro in the same year will be nice. Was thinking that Apple might make such a change only for the base model to be released one year later.

They almost always don’t do it. It gets grandfathered in the next one.

Next year's regular iPhone 18 will feature the smaller Dynamic Island

Technically, what's supposedly getting smaller is the cutout in the display for the front-facing camera and Face ID hardware, not the Dynamic Island. The DI can be dynamically resized independent of the size of the cutout. When the Dynamic Island isn't displaying anything, its size is zero, but the cutout is still visible.
