iPhone 18 With 9GB RAM Still Won't Support Two New iOS 27 Features

Because third party keyboard support on iOS is a special form of torture.
It is absolutely not an exaggeration. I've had it turned off on my phone for quite some time. I got tired of it changing words I had typed correctly into nonsense, way back at the start of the sentence. It would "correct" words into words that don't exist, and consistently fail to recognize contractions.
I've tried it both ways and I assure you I am better off without autocorrupt.
Seems like you actually don't know what you're talking about in either case and just want to be argumentative.

Interesting. I only rarely have it give the wrong correction and pretty much always I also had a typo in what I was typing. Who knows but perhaps individual writing styles get better or worse results from auto correct. So for you, I agree it's best to have it off.

That's my point though. When that statement was put out (and still today) the only options for Apple devices with RAM are 8 GB (not enough) and 12 GB (enough). If that statement said "requires and iPhone, or iPad with at least 9 GB of unified memory" that would publicly divulge a specification of new devices that are not launching until 2027, which is a very un-Apple things to do.

True, mostly. With or without the extra RAM for these two features you can still do all the same things. The extra just makes it a slightly nicer experience. Like 4K vs HDMI TV or having better speakers.
On beta 2. Seriously the new Siri sucks. It still cannot handle simple things like adding reminders that are slightly less common, very smoothly. Would I ask it to do more? Absolutely not. They don’t have much time left to prove that Siri works as advertised. Scammed us on 16 pro max. 17 pro max is their last run before they need to switch to real Gemini.
The lower-end iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will be equipped with 9GB of RAM, up from 8GB in the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
In a social media post, Kuo said the 1GB increase in RAM will ensure that Apple Intelligence features continue to run smoothly on the pair of devices.
The higher-end iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and foldable "iPhone Ultra" will each have the same 12GB of RAM as the iPhone 17 Pro models, added Kuo.
Apple is expected to release the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the iPhone Ultra in September this year, while the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air will reportedly be released around March 2027.
Even with an increased 9GB of RAM, two new Apple Intelligence features coming with iOS 27 will not be available on the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, including the ability to customize the expressiveness and pace of Siri's voice and a "major boost in accuracy" for speech-to-text dictation. This is because the latest advanced on-device Apple Intelligence model powering those two features requires a minimum of 12GB of RAM.

RAM and NAND storage chips are currently expensive due to a supply shortage, resulting in Apple raising prices on more than a dozen products last month. For now, iPhones avoided price increases, but analysts have estimated that the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e could cost $100 to $200 more than the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e.

I think the question though is if it really needs 12GB for that or if it's just 12GB is the only available next step beyond 8GB available. If 8GB isn't enough, 12GB has been the next step so even if they only really needed 9GB for it to technically work, they don't sell a phone with only 9GB today.

I don't see them releasing a new phone next year and not supporting the latest Siri AI. Maybe the 18e? But I doubt the regular 18 would get the same treatment

Oh please. When has apple ever done two ram increases in a row?
It looks like they are trying to make a bigger difference between the Pro and non-Pro models. I'm sure this will get more people to go Pro, but in this economy, I think it may actually push more people to keep their existing phone rather than "upgrade" and feel they are getting an inferior phone.
If RAM wasn't so crazy expensive, we should have 16GB phones now that could actually do a lot more on-device AI processing.

Apple wins either way. They only need you to keep using iPhones, not just to keep buying them. 🙂

Another thing to differentiate the Pros--hardware enabled advanced AI. Crummy to do that with dictation, however. Gatekeeping a necessary feature is criminal.

Care to divulge how you came to such a conclusion?
And why should we trust Google over Apple? Oh that’s right; Siri will be powered by Google because Google knows a thing or two about AI and Apple hasn’t a clue. Never mind.
How exactly did you come to the conclusion that 9gb is plenty? This is the exact opposite of what I've read in various articles, and the comments on this forum. I'd say your statement is wildly inaccurate based on this.

Apple: We want to put AI on your phone but can’t because of AI.
Apple is the master of extracting the maximum profit from customers for each device sold. Years of managing the narrative, creating FOMO, driving peoples desire to buy top of the line whenever possible.
Promoting an elite image of the product, appealing to the narcissistic tendencies of many buyers, it's quite the display of sales and marketing expertise.
It will be interesting to witness how customers respond going forward with this latest round of substantial price hikes. Some products previously perceived as a reasonable value have been reassigned rather stratospheric prices.
I'm sticking with my iPhone 13 mini until it no longer gets security updates. If I want AI (wrong 24% of the time at best) I'll just use an app with off-device processing.
What would be cool is if you could offload that processing to your mac over wifi/the internet. That'd give people a better reason to own both.
