Oh my god - I just had to come on here to say I LOOOOOOVVVEEEE 2.1!!!!
:D:D:D:D

The only bummer is the Last.fm app no longer works. But that's a small price to pay for a rock-solid OS, no more crashes, no lags, smoother performance, and Genius playlists! And besides, the Last.fm app will surely get fixed soon (or 2.1.1 might be around the corner....)

I'm sure that the application will get updated to work correctly with the new firmware.

Of course, "An unknown error has occured." Now I have to restore my iPhone. Never fails. Out of all the iPhone updates so far there's been only one, maybe two, that have installed without a glitch. I'm getting sick of getting sick of this.

Just tried again. "This iPhone can not be restored." What's the problem with these updates?

Update:

I'm updating on a G4 MDD with a Sonnet USB 2.0 card. This card works fine for everything else, even syncing the iPhone. I unplugged the iPhone from the 2.0 port and into a built-in 1.0 port. It seems to be restoring now. Maybe this info can help someone. Too bad it'll take all night to put all my data back on.

Update 2:

After the restore, iTunes did not automatically sync my iPhone. I took advantage of this and plugged the iPhone back into the 2.0 port. It is now restoring my Apps and music. Sucks that I have to do this, but at least it's working.

My advice to anyone with built-in USB 1.0 and a USB 2.0 card: Just use the built-in USB 1.0 to install iPhone updates.

Signal Strength IS stronger (not just display)?

In my hands I have two iPhones one is 2.0.2, one is 2.1...

Using the engineer field tools (the *3001#12345#* thingy) I'm seeing about a 5 to 10 dB stronger signal in the home on the 2.1 iPhone (-81db ish) vs the 2.0.2 iPhone (-89dB ish).

Just for reference, before the update both phones were both pretty consistent with each other. Obviously some fluctuation but neither were showing a clear advantage over the other.

Just got home and am installing now..... I'm kind of disappointed in no "Push" added.

Grr.

I used to get like 1 or two bars of 3G - sometimes only of Edge in my basement, now it appears I get full bars of 3G!

By the way, did anyone notice the 3G icon changed?

3G reception where I couldn't get it before!

Way faster backup and the signal is stronger and stable. I have 3 bars inside the house where I never did before. Also maybe it is me , but the 3G indicator looks like it changed

I'm happy to say that since installing 2.1 I now have 3G reception in my house whereas before, it would either stay on GPRS or constantly show "No Service".

I'm a happy camper now. :p

For an accurate test of your 3G signal strength, and to see if the 2.1 update really does someting, other than just bump the bars up visually, put your iPhone into "Field Test Mode" prior to the update and then after the update. Example:

To do so, go to the number pad and type *3001#12345#* hit send.
Look at the numeic indicator next to your carrier logo in the upper left of the screen. The lower the number, the weaker the signal. Keep in mind that all numbers are actually - negative. The closer to 0 the better the signal. This is resulted from the carrier, not from Apple.

-75 gives all 5 bars of strength. Call quality is perfect.
-105 no bars, just barely hanging on to 3G. Call quality is sub par.

to exit field test mode, just hit your home button. Ther are a slew of other things in this mode that you can see, but unless you are a UMTS technician, most of it will be gibberish to you. This will really tell you what is going on behind the scenes of the signal bar.

Is there a way, similar to this, to make the phone stay on 3g like my blackjack? This stupid update totally killed me.

On 3G outages...

I've got a Treo and in a 3G area I had major problems with disconnected calls and couldn't even call my home number for over a half hour.

It's the network, probably not the iphone.

Ironic that AT&T, the Death Star, advertises itself as having the 'best signal'.

Compared to what? 2 Tin cans and a string?

By the way, did anyone notice the 3G icon changed?

The 3G icon is indeed different, the "3G" symbol is now blue!

The "no data network" symbol, which used to be a circle within a filled rectangle is now just a blue circle.

Haven't seen the EDGE symbol yet (although the circle could be EDGE but I doubt it)...

Upgraded to 2.1 now no more 3G in my house!

So I just upgraded.. Was getting 2-4 bars of 3G at home. Could surf and talk on the phone at the same time. Never had a dropped call at home. Now my phone won't connect to 3G; I toggle Airplane Mode, it'll start in 3G then immediately jump into EDGE. Needless to say I am not impressed. WTF!

Just installed - absolutely brilliant! Can't find the option for the additional text alerts - maybe it's not an option but just happens. Apps install MUCH quicker - not only that but updates keep their positions on the home screen! Coverage icons much nicer and no lag!

Songs in iPod now display album?

Looks like the sound bug is fixed! iPod no longer changes ringer volume!!!! :)

Looking forward to the better battery life!

Actually, they have just inversed the icons (well, and enlarged the font).

Dot (formally white dot in blue rectangle) means GPRS - slowest data connection
E means EDGE
3G means 3G network

If there is nothing it means you have no data signal.

I love how everyone who rants about missing features claims they are SO EASY to implement. Like we have a forum full of expert mobile platform coders here. Like the as*clown who was saying "a native document management application" or a "real gps application" were easily implemented...really? Do you really believe that?

Just because "other smartphones" have it, does not mean that it's trivial to add. This is a new (ok, 14 months old is still pretty new) mobile OS, and apps just came out a few months ago. These other smartphone OS's have been out for many years, so development has had time. According to my 4.8 seconds of research, Blackberry didn't even announce a native Office editor until early this year (link), and Blackberries have been around for over 10 years. I'm sure a real GPS application is no laughing matter either.

I'm only a minor fanboy (note - NOT fanboi, cause that version of the term is just ridiculously stupid), not an Apple diehard. I'd like to see the features many people are ranting about as well, only I realize what it takes to add such things, while trying to maintain stability as the forefront of development.

Features will continue to come. And no matter what is added...even after they add MMS, C&P, fully voice-guided GPS, native editing of every document format to ever exist, HD resolution, two 14-megapixel video cameras, dolby 7.1 surround sound bluetooth audio, an IR remote control, 120dB alert volume, 7 days of battery life in full use, and 100% stability...you will STILL have people complaining about some other useless feature.

Text still lagging

WTF I thought they were gonna fix this. Anyone else noticing? It's not as bad but it still is happening off and on throughout my typing.

maybe it's not an option but just happens.
Yeah, there's no way to turn it off. Which I'm sure is annoying for some, you also can't change the interval. A little dumb in my opinion.

Seriously! It's soooo much better

Where's my shake to shuffle!?!?!?

Have 2.1

But I have a Question. What's with the new restrictions? They added to restrictions to the camera?

Anyone know if EDGE is improved? I still have iPhone Classic and have experienced a terrible signal at my apartment (which is just a mile off of I-40 in Raleigh and less than a mile from the N.C. State campus...wtf?)

I haven't read through all of the postings as of yet, but I just tried Edge and I was amazed that it went so quickly compared to the way it was before. :D

The early 2.1 betas for developers had it, but then it was pulled out by Apple "for further development". My guess is they learned from the MobileMe debacle and decided not to stick to their announced release date at the expense of quality. In other words, it was not ready for prime time yet. No word on when we'll see it. But kudos to Apple for focusing on an update where everything works (at least for me).

Well that is what I figured but does that mean they will release another update before September ends to make their promise or who knows when we will have it until further word and they will act like nothing happened until then lol.
