I agree whole-heartedly ONLY if you never jailbroken your phone in any shape manner or form. If you did then I dont really have much sympathy for you.

No, my iPhone was never jailbroken, so there's no excuse for Apple's pathetic updates that FAIL.

However, the 3rd time was the charm, and my iPhone is once again now working. I have no clue why the BACKUP part failed twice.

My suspicion is that there is some INTEL-SNOBBERY going on at Apple, and that all new software gets little testing on PPC Macs before being sent out to the masses. It's just ridiculous to release software for a NECESSARY item like a phone that does not work or fails to work 2 times before working a 3rd time wasting peoples' time. If iTUNES 8.0 doesn't work well on PPC Macs, well than Apple should not RELEASE SUCH CRAP for PPC MACS. I'm starting to feel like every Apple PPC update is more a planned obsolescence VIRUS to get me to switch to an Intel Mac. Well, Apple better shape up or the PPC people that kept Apple afloat are gonna walk and we STILL NUMBER MORE PEOPLE, and I'll be one of them if this crap continues.
I've own an Apple computer since 1983.

I almost half wonder if Steve Jobs is really in control anymore, he looked pretty sickly to me during the the other day's event. :(

your phone might be defected. just go to Apple Store, they'll check it

I still have lag on contacts and I also still have the lag on text messages.
I won't know about the battery till tomorrow. I'm disappointed I was really hoping the lag would be gone.

I've never had backup issues nor any of the others listed many times over. My install went great. It took less than 7 minutes total.

It's too early to tell on the dropped call also. Maybe by sometime next week I will be able to form an opinion.

edit* I forgot email. No change in this either. I might get it and I might not. Email has never worked for me since day one. If i restart my phone it always begins to pick up all the emails like it's suppose to. For now I'm stuck restarting the phone b4 checking email.

In regards to the headphone cable.....it DOES improve call quality for me, i dont know how but it does. I call without headphones and i get hissing, people start to complain about the call quality and i have to hang up (or it drops). with headphones seconds later, the call quality is fine. If i call initially with headphones on, call quality is fine. If I answer the phone with headphones on, call quality is fine. I think this needs further people to evaluate please.

So do my headphones. I say it is because you don't have the outside interference going on. I prefer to use my headphones for calls anyways but I really can't use them here at work. :p

ok im trying to get the txt to beep/vibrate again and its not happening........also i was trying to sync and it was taking a long time......took all the apps off just to see if it was that or another problem......it took about 10 secs to sync without the apps

My feeling to the signal improvement is in 2 folds:
- Apple reprograms the firmware to stick with the 3G signals longer before turning to EDGE or no service. Visually increase the bars and the icon, so that people will think it has improved significantly.
- Apparently, the signal does improve, but in a subtle way of 5db in a worst situation.

hey, do the backup and upgrade the firmware in 2 separate processes. So it won't stuff up the important update process. Hope this help.

9 screen limit

Searched and didn't see anyone reporting on this yet:

I can confirm there's still a 9 screen / page limit to the springboard. I'm running out of room, and wondering what happens when I physically have no icon space left to fill. 22 more apps/bookmarks will tell me. Meanwhile, I'm trying to re-think my organization scheme.

Also, I can happily say that it appears this firmware update fixed a problem I was having where all non-default apps would crash immediately and the iPod app would "lose" all knowledge of music/podcasts and report itself as empty, even though iTunes recognized it was there. This problem was occurring repeatably after any power cycle, but so far with 2.1 it has not reappeared after two power cycles.

I'm loving the 2.1 firmware. I actually get service where I didn't get it before (although a bit flaky), and it seems to switch to Edge more quickly when there's no 3g available. Before, I had to turn 3g off just to get service. Texting is much more responsive so I'm liking that. Loving the Genius feature, though it makes me want more space on my iPhone just so I can add more music and really make the most of it. Speed test wise, for me at least, it's still the average 700kbps, so sadly nothing new there. I haven't really cared about a bug fix update since I've never noticed a difference until this one.

How do i get the Genius to work? I updated and I can't see the option to turn the Genius on...

You should be see the option under playlist, and when playing a song, the genius symbol should appear under the song. I heard you have to activate Genius first on iTunes though.

Fewer dropped calls

Downloading now....just kidding...I mean how many people have to say they are downloading it. By like page 11 I finally gave up trying to read users experiences using 2.1 this morning before I upgraded. All I practically read was "Downloading now". Thank goodness this forum is written on virtual paper. ;)

I have had my phone stay on Edge because of the drop call issues when switching from 3G to Edge. Today I upgraded and I had to drive from Walnut Creek to Mountain View in the SF Bay Area.

I noted that my phone started out in 3G and switched to Edge without dropping a call. I must admit that during the drive (which is over an hour with no traffic) I did drop two calls. Each drop I reached for the phone and it said 3G and full bars. One call was to a land line so I assume it was me and the other was to a cell phone so it could have been either. Hey, my Verizon phone dropped calls too.

I actually witnessed my phone go from 3G full bars to 1 bar and then the 3G icon disappeared. Then my bars started to go back up to full but still blank on the icon. No dropped call. When I hung up the phone it right away showed the E. Once on a call it went from 3G Full, Blank Icon, then I hung up, then DOT and then E. Again, no dropped call. So it really seems like this is a BIG step forward and I do appreciate it. Okay...no remarks about looking at the phone and driving...you all do it too and mine were just glances down at the icon.

On a not so good note, I still can't get 3G in my house even though I am shown in the blue area represented by AT&T as 3G. I wish I had another normal 3G phone to see if it gets a signal. We have two iPhones and both don't get the signal. I am pretty sure the issue is on AT&T now. Besides I can do WiFi at the home anyways.

Hope others have good experiences to and hopefully we will see some of those new features promised. As far as that goes, this update lacked greatly in that area. But hey...maybe they thought that it was better to fix and not introduce new variables in the software at the same time. They might have learned from the MobileMe and 2.0 launch.

Thanks

On the tab for Playlists on my iPhone all I see is my Purchased, On The Go, and my Playlists. How can I activate it in iTunes? I've used the Genius on iTunes before.. And that symbol doesn't appear.

All good here

Updated my 3G iPhone, all is well on my end, no complaints to report thus far.

So you got Genius setup on your iTunes already? Weird, the Genius option should appear above the On the Go playlist.

New Text Message

I dont know if this has been posted, but I noticed when I get a new text now it just says new text message. It no longer displays the name of the person sending it. Cool new feature if you dont want someone just looking at your phone and seeing who sent the text.

has anyone else noticed this? bc i havent? (not saying your wrong)

1st gen 8 gb IPhone.

Downloading took several tries on a PC.

I had hoped this would fix my email problems but not yet. I still am not getting consistent email delivery from my earthlink accounts. Yahoo is fine.

I have one message but as often happens it says "this message has not been downloaded from the server."

I used to get pretty good email delivery until 2.0. Then I had a day or so of good email, so it seems the setup is correct. If I find time, I'll go to the store.

Big improvement - location is now correct (before it pegged my home location a few miles away). Safari seems a bit faster.

I haven't read through all of the postings as of yet, but I just tried Edge and I was amazed that it went so quickly compared to the way it was before. :D

Ironically, my EDGE is now slower than before -- quite a bit slower: .16 mbps (".82 times faster than EDGE"). It used to be faster than average.

But I'll gladly accept that. As others have mentioned, it's a bit too early to judge the difference in battery life. But the signal strength is better than before. All of the apps open slightly quicker. There's much less lag (but still more than on my 1st generation Touch) and scrolling is much smoother. The earpiece is definitely louder than before, almost on par with the speaker. I used to keep my volume full up; now I've turned it down to half.

Also, the screen menus seem a lot more legible, as if the text had higher contrast. All in all, nothing earth-shattering. But it's a desperately-needed and welcome update.

How, Where, How do you use it? Or are you just taking the pi.s, because Apple are unable to provide a function every single other phone released in the world does?

Personally, this update is dissapointing and shows many broken promises. Is this the new Apple? Full of bullsh.t, unable to work out how to perform the most extreem basic functions?? Broken promises, are they turning to lying now because they cannot perform?

As far as I'm concerned we are all still suffering from Apples absolutely stupid selfish and slack actions of not getting full access to codes for 3rd party developers.
I mean really no document management? Not that pathetic code in the OS, you cant even load let alone edit an excel file over 200kb. PDF's dont have bookmarks, word doesn't render correctly for basic formats, of course they knew all this, and were approached by DataViz, but Apple sent them away, only of recent do they have access, so how much longer do we have to wait, OH sorry not wait, I mean STOP ALL MY WORK FUNCTIONS USING A MOBILE DEVICE?
Push Data?? What happened?

Also, how is it that, a more normal battery life, Apps not crashing, etc etc are now called functions by Apple??

Steve Jobs - No wonder your health is in such array, all that guilt must be getting to you. How do you sleep at night? We've done our bit, we gave you the $$$ AND if your Australian or a few other countries, we gave you heaps of $$$$.

Having said all that, I guess Apple are not really a phone company, they make computers and are good at it. This is only their second phone, and it really shows, but I guess their focus and money go more towards their computers AS IT SHOULD I GUESS.

HEY MAYBE APPLE COULD ALSO OUTSOURCE THEIR IPHONE PRODUCTION TO HTC HTC HTC HTC HTC HTC Yeah, then we'll have the best phone around!!

Needless to say, I'm not happy with the hyped up bug fix (but certainly needed)

You really must be a sad and miserable person...I feel really bad for you. So much venom over this. My, my...

There is a great aftermarket for iPhones. Just sell it and put yourself out of your misery.

Just finished upgrading. Checked my signal strength before and after and there is basically no change. Before I got a solid -59 on 3G and a variable -59 to -63 on EDGE. After (ie. w/ 2.1) 3G varies from -57 to -65 and EDGE varies from -61 to -65. I got and get all bars under both EDGE and 3G. But this is home and my signal is fine. It will be inetresting to check the signal when I return to work on Monday. Both were fine there outside, EDGE is marginal (-70ish - 2 bars) in my office and 3G is poor (-99 max and 1 bar or No Service).

Haven't tested DL speed yet.

No problems in the upgrade, but afterwards I still had a problem with apps not updating. Got the "did not load" warning. Had to take each off (uncheck on apps tab) and put back on. Finally I got the iPhone app store to stop reading that there were updates available.

Still have not gotten the one app i downloaded on the phone last week to transfer to the imac iTunes. Fortunately I only paid .99 for it. Next step is to restart iTunes, reboot puter, etc. to see if that helps.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to pay for it again if you download it again from itunes.

How come now (after I updated to 2.1) I only get a notification that I received a text message, as opposed to the message's content being displayed in the popup before?
