I delved a bit deeper on how the new 2.2 firmware handles podcasts over the air. But basically instead of downloading audio/video podcasts, you can just click the name and it will stream it and play it immediately on the iPhone via 3G regardless of filesize. And it will play in the background or you can pause it and go back to it by clicking the iTunes app again later.

I've already added this to the list, thanks anyway. :)

In NYC for example, can you now click on the subway station on the map and get directions to the station? You can click on the station logo in Google Maps but couldn't in iPhone Maps.

I don't think so; I'm tapping and it isn't doing so.

yoh can redeem gift cards in the itunes app now

That's always been there - since update 1.1.3 I think.

Even over cellular? I thought it wouldn't even open iTunes if you didn't have a wifi connection.

I don't know, I rarely use the iTunes Store. I'm sure the option to redeem gift cards has been there since 1.1.3.

I think this is new for this version of iTunes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I updated two of my iPhones the other one did not get blocked out (Seen below) as it does now...http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=145250&d=1227300927

Liz's iPhone is currently being updated at this time.

Seems new. I haven't downloaded the iTunes update yet myself, I'll do so now.

No screenshots, but sound/muting appears to be working differently now.

I won't say "all" yet, but several apps that did not honor the "silence" switch are now silent when it's set to vibrate. Also, the same apps mute when the phone sleeps, even when set to "noisy."

Since several apps changed all at the same time, this makes me think they changed the muting behavior at the OS level.

Unfortunately, it makes it rather difficult to use Ambiance or other noise generation apps overnight. Even without the sleep mute, the need to be in "noisy" mode means I'll be woken up by phone calls, appointments, and texts.

I'm hoping it'll be temporary behavior or that there's another sound channel these apps could be using.

Maps is no caching things. Can't really screenshot that, but i tried it and works.

Don't credit it, NDimichino found it.

Yes, but I don't think you could actually use it unless you were on wifi. Now that it will allow you to open iTunes on cellular you can redeem then too. So the whole podcast thing has allowed for other features to work too such as browsing music over cellular (even though you can't actually buy it) and redeeming gift cards over cellular. That's pretty handy and I was wanting to do that last weekend so I could buy some apps with a new gift card.

According to Wikipedia, the 2.2 update includes support for line-in audio, have I missed something? Where can we use that?

I did hear that line-in was coming up but I don't recall hearing that about 2.2

Yes, this is most definitely the case - muting is different. There are several apps (WunderRadio and Ambiance as examples) that now mute when the phone sleeps. Undesired behavior particularly for both of these apps.

You can actually listen to Podcasts without downloading them. I love that!
And if you want to download them, you just click on the "FREE" button and it sets a reminder and the next time you are on WiFi or synced, it will automatically download it. Nice! :D

Do you mean the symbol of a globe (next to the numbers button)? That's to change the input language.

Great thx, also my podcasts in iTunes only has a what's hot option, no search or categories. I'm in Ireland so full functionality may not be available here...

Correct, but the user only stated you could redeem gift cards through the iTunes Store; nothing about the ability to do so over cellular.

Really bummed that the AM/PM display on the unlock screen is now gone (and the reset trick doesn't work anymore)...has anyone found a way to get it back?

If you find an album on iTunes Store with wifi and then go away from wifi, you can then open iTunes Store and still access that same page with song previews and stuff over CELLULAR! I think this is the first bug!

My unlock screen still displays the AM/PM indicator.

Just tried it myself. Opened an album while connected to WiFi, left and entered Settings, turned WiFi off and returned back to iTunes Store. It loaded! The clip is taking forever to start streaming though - probably because I'm connected to GRPS.
Edit: Finally, after picking up 3G the clip started to play. Pretty signifigant bug.

Battery life for me is better on this update. I've already loaded a few pages in Safari over EDGE as well as some Google street view and I turned fetch on 15 minutes. I've used my iPhone for over an hour today and the battery status icon is still full... usually by now, it's down by 1 pixel or 2. I'm psyched!

Just tried to purchase a song while connected to 3G. Got a message saying purchase wasn't available at this time. Shame. :(

When I updated my iPod Touch to 2.2 (earlier jailbraked), my battery indicator set to numbers in bossprefs before update, still remained numbers

I just noticed that...mine is missing too. That is a bummer. Yet a post after yours says he still has it. Maybe there's a setting somewhere?

Hello All.

I was happy to see they inproved a lot of things. One thing I can't figure it out is the alert on the txt message. I know on 2.1 we only seen "New Text Message" ...

Now with the upgrade to 2.2 it shows the person that is txt you. Is there a way to turn this off and go back to the image below?

Other thing also my ringer sound is gone... Nothing I can't hear anything now. I tried to call myself from work nothing. Is anyone having this issue now also.

My unlock screen isn't displaying the AM/PM anymore either. I want AM/PM displayed. If yours is displaying it, and three of us are reporting that we are not, then maybe there's some type of switch to turn it on or off.
