iPhone 3.0 Parental Controls Now Allows for Explicit Content on App Store

We reported back in May that Apple might loosen the App Store content restrictions once the iPhone 3.0 software became available. iPhone 3.0 offers parental controls which allows you to set what level of content is permissible in your iPhone's Movies, TV Shows, Music and Apps.

Macenstein playfully reports "And then there was porn" pointing out Hottest Girls as the first iPhone App to have nudity.

The App does carry a 17+ Rating for "Frequent/Intense Sexual Content or Nudity" and "Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes".

Parental restrictions can be turned on in Settings -> General -> Restrictions in your iPhone. If an App falls outside of the allowed rating they will simply disappear of your homepage. Once you turn the restrictions off again, the affected apps reappear. This system would have avoided the issue with NiN's app rejection in May. NiN's app was eventually accepted.

the big question is how many parents are actually aware

1. there are parental controls
2. that there is pr0n at the app store


i'm guessing majority don't have a clue about it :(

Oh... I should warn people. It's not a great app. Just flips through various images that I'm pretty sure they don't have the rights to. But the above report is accurate. :)

I wonder if the App icon says "Porn" on it, or whether it says "Notepad" or something to disguise it. I don't think many people would want an App where the icon says "Hardcore Sex" on their homepage. Maybe it should have a security code in the App also (like Safe Note does). I HOPE Apple is creating a separate section in the App store, titled "adult" and that iTunes can disable that section with parental controls. I'm sure there is a huge demand (no one is going to admit it) for real, quality porn on the iPhone (instead of the crap that is in the App store right now), but I think EVERYONE is going to want it to be hidden on their phones.

Heck, I think there would already be a HUGE market right now for an App that has a hidden photo album, porn or not or just from your camera, that is password protected (like Safe Note). In fact, the "photos" App that comes on the iPhone should allow a separate, password-protected folder, where the user can drag and drop photos from the normal camera folder into it.

So true. Alot of parents will really have no idea about this.. Unless this hits the news (which I'm guessing it will) as the iPhone/ iPod touch being a mobile porn device. This could hurt the image of the iPhone alot.

If apple has an "adult" section of anything, they will do great damage to themselves. No one will be attracted to Apple products if they have adult titles, but many will be repelled.

And porn apps for sale mean that Apple IS in the porn business to the tune of a 30% take.

I'm sure most parents and television newscasters already realize that anyone can use the Safari browser to access adult content.

I see what you are saying. I agree. I suppose they should just add parental controls to iTunes but not create a separate section. That makes sense. My ideal scenario would be that Apple ban porn sales but instead create a separate password-protected photo/image folder on the iPhone and allow users to load the content they choose from their own computers or camera. This would allow them to ban porn but not have people cry "censorship" because they can say "we gave you a folder. you can put whatever you want in it."

But aren't there like 17+ erotic audiobooks on the iTunes Music Store?

I agree that it's kind of damaging to their so-called 'image', but it really depends on how hardcore they allow. I doubt they will actually approve hardcore. Who knows, perhaps this app kinda slipped through.

If they do allow more than just topless (well, actually, even just topless), you can bet sales will go through the roof. It's game over for the competitors.

Furthermore, unless the developer has the right to 'sell' the images, it could get taken down by copyright infringement.

I disagree. There is no way in hell that I would want an App on my phone called "Hot Girls" for my boss or mother to find. Nope! It would have to be something hidden on my phone before I would spend a single penny on it.

iPhone is not just a phone anymore. It is a platform to deliver media. (A small computer) And from your definition, every single computer company is in porn business.

True. Whether people admit it or not, it is true.
Ever since Safari was added to a phone, the phone became a link to the internet - and the internet is essentially EVERYTHING.

Well... if you must...

Hiding is possible. Fill your device with 180 apps (the max visible including dock) and then add more--they won't show up because they're off the last page. You can pull them up only via spotlight search (or by deleting other apps to make room for them to come into view). There's also the slight chance they may toss something into Settings.

Anyway, it's interesting to see this enormous App Store experiment evolve.
