Didn't the announcement also say that there would be a new version of the SDK?
Is so, I hope they will add SDK access to the USB port so that third party hardware can also be created.

Springboard backgrounds, copy and paste, folders new version of safari with features like safari 4 and I will be a happy camper.

Something tells me that I'll be buying my third new iPhone in two years, sometime around July of '09! :)

A mini Finder like application for file management would also be very nice. Could this be implemented as just an app without needing to upgrade the main OS though?

This could be implemented as an app, yes... unless you mean app management, which would require an OS upgrade. Of course, it would be limited to managing its own files due to the sandbox restrictions, and therefore wouldn't be of much use - UNLESS its purpose was to enable transfer of arbitrary files from one place to another, via an iPhone or iPod touch.

First there is no USB port on an iPhone. Secondly, access to the hardware has not much to do with the SDK, you have to pay for a license.

When Apple last year previewed iPhone operating system update, did they announce the release of iPhone 3G too at the same time? Or was it later? I'm just wondering if they will announce the new iPhone model and its release date next week too... or will it be just about the operating system...

perspective

OK - time for some perspective -

the iPhone is a terrific product, head and shoulders above anything out there (in a big picture sense) -

but it's been missing a few essentials from the beginning (most notably mms) - so yes, mms, copy and paste, and tethering would make us "complete" - but I have a feeling the engineers at Apple have a few other tricks up their sleeves that will generate more enthusiasm for 3.0

Also, a hardware upgrade for the phone should be forthcoming (can we expect yearly hardware upgrades?) which would coincide nicely with the OS upgrade.

I think a better camea with video support, a nice memory boost and improved battery life would be reasonable to expect. Maybe a little video conferencing thrown in for good measure.

The key is for enthusiasts to continue to hardware upgrade, to extend our contracts and keep us motivated and excited.

On the engineering side, though, is to ensure these new upgrades work well and don't decimate the battery.

It's got to be a difficult balancing act trying to squeeze in new hardware and software improvements in the self-imposed 6-12 month time spans and continue to support the older hardware and software.

But I believe :apple: can and will deliver.

Hopefully this will include Flash compatibility also.

No, it won't.

Apple has made it clear they don't want it, and they've been going way out of their way to work on things that work like Flash, but depend on CSS/HTML/AJAX instead.

Look at the search bar on Apple.com, for example. Also, look at the Safari 4 welcome "video" that plays the first time you load it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3ax10CH7tw

That's a YouTube video, but the original is not video, it's done with open web standards to simulate video. Apple has been going nuts working on stuff like that over the last year. It's very clear that they're going to fight hard to keep Flash off the iPhone.

OK, I'm going to call it. I say that the teathering will exclusively work with a new Apple touchpad slate ebook type device.
After all if Apple do release a 10" device it will need some form of Internet access beyond WiFi but who wants to pay for separate 3G access for an iPhone AND a tablet.

I'm trying to put the pieces together: I wonder if this rumoured 'springboard' ('stacks?') is Apple future direction. If the rumoured 'netbook' does not have a physical keyboard and this new 3.0 iPhone OS also incorporates this 'springboard', then Snow Leopard will tie all this together.

The future of computing will shun away (as much as possible) physical keyboards and mice.

It's clear that AT&T is going to make you pay more to tether an iPhone to any kind of device. (From what they've said, it sounds like it will be the same...you pay $30 for data on the iPhone and another $30 if you want the ability to tether to anything.)

So if you're going to be paying more, why would you limit yourself to using it with one kind of computer but not another? Of course, at that point it makes sense to build 3G into the tablet since that would probably be the same $30 you would have paid to tether.

tethering

I've been tethering for about three months now (since jailbreaking). I know if AT&T found out they would **** their pants and heavily fine my ass. But so far so good. It works perfectly for me when I need my full laptops browser and there is no wireless around.

It would be nice to do it legally!

I don't think you know what the springboard is

They announced the 1st generation 3G iPhone several months later. The 2.0 SDK came first.

The 1st gen. 3G iPhone was announced at WWDC in June.

Why MMS?

What is so special about MMS? Who uses it, except the teens who do that 'sexting' where they send nude pics to each other? What can you do with it that you can't do by taking a photo and emailing to someone?

Is it a poor man's emailing a photo? as in do most phone not have email capabilities so have to use MMS for this functionality? If not, I don't get it. If so... I guess it's a feature some people have to use because they don't have an alternative - which I sort of understand.

Could this event be due to the fact that Apple has to submit the iPhone to the FCC for approval, and in doing so the 'secrets' may be spilt at anytime? This event, although a pre-announcement, allows apple to set the stage, instead of being upstaged when the info goes live on the FCC website.

No because this is about the OS and not the hardware.

a previous app button

I would LOVE to see them implement a feature where a pulsing bar at the top acts as a button to jump you back to the previous App you were using without having to tap home, then tap the app. (Very similar to how you can jump back to a phone call by tapping the green bar.)

I've wished for something like this several times when jumping back and forth between 2 apps.

MMS--meh. I never really used it when I had it. It's not a big deal to e-mail pics. Since my g/f and I both have iPhones, it would be cool to send pics faster that way. Not a killer feature for me.

Tethering would be wicked cool, but I'm not prepared to pay additional monies to AT&T to have the ability to do it. Don't need it THAT bad.

Copy and paste--you know, there are a few times I wished it was there, just for the sake of not having to manually type things in. But really that's rare--I don't find I have a need for that much. I don't think it's a top priority for Apple.

What I'd really like to see is solid MobileMe sync of calendars that I can trust. Right now the calendaring is the most annoying feature.

I agree. In fact, you can email to a phone's TXT address so it can show up on a non-email capable phone. The ONLY reason MMS would be nice is when someone sends YOU an MMS. That way you don't have to click that stupid "AT&T: Somebody sent you a multimedia message" link and type in the cryptic username and password on a website to view it. (which you can't copy and paste, of course).

Where the f**k is PUSH?!!?!

What I am wondering about push is that if a new phone is required (better cpu/batteries or something) to cope with the extra load then surely everyone who owns an iPhone 3g is entitled to a free upgrade. A company cant say a device will have something and then after a lot of people buy the product say that it will only be available on the next model.

I bet push (when/if it is finally released) will be available for the 3g just with certain downfalls.
