If the new OS includes MMS and C&P, I', going to lose my lunch at how pathetic they are.

2 years of it being completely unnecessary and suddenly "OS 3.0" makes it all possible. Horrible.

Where are the real features? I don't want more 2002 cell phone crap

So you've been bitching about no CnP, and now it might actually be here it's not good enough?

They should change this site to MacWhiners.com.

Could this event be due to the fact that Apple has to submit the iPhone to the FCC for approval, and in doing so the 'secrets' may be spilt at anytime? This event, although a pre-announcement, allows apple to set the stage, instead of being upstaged when the info goes live on the FCC website.

100% correct. Why be upstaged by the FCC when Apple can unveil their new cash cow and generate buzz the way they want to!

How about bluetooth file transfer and video recording the basics feature on any nokia phones. Video calls even...

What is so special about MMS? Who uses it, except the teens who do that 'sexting' where they send nude pics to each other? What can you do with it that you can't do by taking a photo and emailing to someone?

Is it a poor man's emailing a photo? as in do most phone not have email capabilities so have to use MMS for this functionality? If not, I don't get it. If so... I guess it's a feature some people have to use because they don't have an alternative - which I sort of understand.

Yeah, many people I know don't use their phone for email, some people have email address from Hotmail/Yahoo/Google/etc and their mobile phone doesn't support it. And many people just don't know how to use email in their mobile phone... my parents send me some pictures using MMS, because it's simple to use.

I really want MMS. And not to send pictures - I always do that by email.

MMS allows me to send contacts to people. I always get people asking me to send them so and so's number. On my iPhone I have to look up the number, remember it / write it down and then tap it into a SMS.

On my very old SonyEricsson I could send the business card over in a couple of clicks. It's frustrating I can't do this on my iPhone

Love it or hate it, MMS is needed.

Maybe someday everyone will have phones with access to e-mail. Now is not that time. We need MMS.

unless you live in Japan, which you don't.

Doesn't matter anyway. Tethering and MMS are great; and so is copy and paste. Tethering along is amazing.

Hm, I'd love to use the tethering option properly, that would definitely come in handy for me, and copy and paste would be nice for a change, but I'm hoping theres something big beside these features. Not that I'm complaining mind, I'm still happy with the functionality from the current 2.2 OS.

MMS would be nice, but not entirely needed, because I rarely use it, and third party apps cover this anyway.

How about the ability to record video and turn-by-turn GPS navigation?

What I'd really like is a 32GB iPhone.

Tethering would be nice. I probably wouldn't use it too much myself, but I know some who would make good use from it.

Companies can (and do) request that everything except the radio reports stay secret until they wish. So at the most, we'd find out if it had CDMA (ha!), and perhaps the overall new shape if their FCC label diagram shows it.

Even the first time, Jobs just used the FCC as an excuse to show off the phone and build up the hype for six months.

Besides, I believe that Apple held an iPhone Roadmap event at this time last year, right?

I hope all of these things actually do come to fruition with the 3.0 release. One of the things I really liked, besides MMS is this:

A new home screen app (a.k.a. SpringBoard), designed from the ground up for a system where users have a few dozen or more extra apps installed. Managing dozens of apps on the iPhone today is simply a pain in the ass.

I could not agree how much a pain in the ass it is to manage the apps.

No, it won't.

Apple has made it clear they don't want it, and they've been going way out of their way to work on things that work like Flash, but depend on CSS/HTML/AJAX instead.

Excellent post. I'm sick of hearing stuff about how Flash is coming to the iPhone. I'm at the point where I'm beginning to suspect that Adobe has its employees spreading "Flash on the iPhone" rumors on various forums. I just don't see where else this stuff is coming from.

The Pre hype train is starting to pick up speed and needs to be stopped.

According to...?

Wait, let me get this straight. You're going to be upset if the DO put in MMS and C&P? Because it will prove how "pathetic" they were all along? So it would be LESS pathetic to NOT put in these "2002" features?

I know there's just no pleasing some people, but this is really above and beyond.

The need to send someone's phone number would also be fixed with copy and paste... I've needed is many times for trying to copy a number from an email to my address book or for the very reason you stated.

People try to send us MMS images of our 10 month old nephew a few times a month and we never get the images. So, there's always that.

The fact that my in laws have figured out how to send a picture message yet I can't receive it drives me up a wall.

Dear Steve Jobs,

Please let this upgrade to be available for 1st/2nd gen iPhones (and not just the fancy shmancy new 3rd gen)!

Sincerely,
T.Will

Nope. Even if Apple shows off h/w (so far they've only billed it as a s/w event) the FCC report doesn't give details on anything but basic functionality. It's no secret that Apple will refresh the iPhone or that it will be 3G or have WiFi. The only aspect the FCC could "upstage" Apple on is the case, and that isn't what Apple is telling everyone will be shown. This isn't an iPhone event, it's an iPhone software event.

Landscape keyboard

What is so special about copy and paste?????

Give me a landscape keyboard already and the ability to forward SMS to other contacts.

MMS...FINALLLYYYYYYYYYY

Would just a firmware update be enough to give digital compass support? Also, C&P would solve the lack of forwarding in sms.

I'd like to see an update to the iPod app so that you can natively play SHOUTcast streams without a 3rd party app. Only reason is so I can listen to streams in the background while using other apps.

My prediction:
It won't have MMS.
It won't have Copy and Paste (or it will but it will be really screwed up)
Tethering will be like all AT&T phones and cost $30 a month with a 5Gb cap.
It will have a new way to sort Apps that will disappoint and confuse everyone.
People will complain constantly, yet still buy the new IPhone or upgrade the OS.

But it doesn't matter, even if it had all this stuff people are already complaining.

My mom and dad use MMS occasionally. They both have some cheap Samsung phones, no smartphones. They don't want e-mail on their phone, they barely know how to e-mail. It's easy enough for them to take a picture, select a contact from their list and hit send.

Ive had copy and paste, mms & tethering on my iphone for a long time.
So this just confirms that the iphone is playing catch-up to the alternate scene (jailbreak community).

Apples restrictions and "recommendations" on how they forcefully push their view on how your phone should be used is really annoying.
Anything to brake the apple chains that are making microsofts look like shoe strings is welcomed with open arms.
