I will pay for it if it has copy and paste , and also a floder to keeps apps that would be useful

Now all that lot would make be a very happy bunny! Fingers crossed! Sadly though we've all been here before... Can't help thinking though.. maybe this IS the time ;-)

MMS & Tethering requires an entire new OS? Surely not. Still, bring it on! :)

Have you ever done any programming? Do you understand how a major feature like that would be added? It certainly doesn't require a whole new OS, but if Apple is going to implement those feature properly and (presumably) give programmers an API through which to access them as well, they would have to create new frameworks and libraries to handle them. Remember, smart phones are more similar to computer platforms than regular old cell phones. Implementing those features will no doubt take some time and yes, it seems quite reasonable that they would arrive with a major OS update.

copy & paste
mms
forward sms

i'm surprised not many people mention the inability of the iphone to forward sms messages. i find this incredibly infuriating.

my cell phone from three upgrades ago could do all of these.

- MMS
- Copy and Paste
- Tethering
- Video Recording.

This is 2009 Apple! Where have you been? You should be ashamed!

3.0 better have these features or I'm switching to the Pre.

MMS to Apple is like Mcdonalds finally after years of complaining from their customers, putting cheese on their burgers

I would just be happy if I could run apps in the background like I have been able to do on my BlackBerries for YEARS!

Already 3.0! This must be big then. I really hope it comes out with background notifications at the very least. Very interested to see what the actual announcements are. Can't wait for tuesday!

Great news!

I'm glad to hear that these features are probably for the 3.0 release. But it still needs voice dialing!!! My voice dialing app on our Sprint phones is awesome and a necessity if you have to use the phone in the car. I just hit the button on my BT headset and say "call so and so mobile/work/home" and that's it.

I'd also like to see video recording, M$ office support (I think Dataviz is taking care of that, though), and stereo bluetooth. Really, all these features should've been in firmware 1.0 and it shouldn't be a big deal to add it. So, I'm optimistic that 3.0 will finally get me to buy an iPhone.

Still wish there was a CDMA version, though. I like my Sprint service and have 5 lines. Customer services stinks but it's getting better. Really don't want to go back to ATT!

All I know is if it tethers, it better be free. There's no way iphone users should be charged extra for something the phone already does on it's own. It's like having a vacuum cleaner for your house, but if you want to use it to vacuum your car and not your home then the Con Ed will charge you because your getting more use from it than they thought you would. In turn they try to find a way to capitalize off of your satisfaction. AT&T is ridiculous. I would love having a video conferencing feature that was speculated for so long as well along with the obvious cut and paste and document editing. The thing is Apple creates great stuff, but I am afraid we might end up paying to use every little feature on the device(s) coming out because of AT&T's greed.

thing again. aren't other AT&T tether devices (eg blackberry) already charging separate fees for this ability? and you can already browse the internet on those devices as well.

AT&T will definitely charge extra for this feature, which sucks b/c i could definitely use it but i'm refusing to shell out any more money for it. i guess this is what i get for being a good little apple lemming and not jailbreaking my phone.

My wife just complained to me about that like yesterday. All I could do is shrug. I do hope it gets added.

Too funny

Will tethering be free on iPhone?

Yeh and so will the data plan for 3.0. Sorry AT&T are not in the business of giving service away.

Someone said in this thread it is $60. That is impressively high. My Verizion card is $65 a month. I only get 6GB but it is not terrible.

I know someone who has run out of space to add any more apps to his iPhone. Something better than the current card based UI is essential now that there are more than 25,000 apps in the store.

Tethering is something that other devices offer, a feature that definitely helps justify those big data plans.

I'd be shocked if after all the negative things Apple has said about MMS they add it.

They've also downplayed the importance of copy/paste, but as the phone grows into a full document management tool lack of copy/paste will go from being a minor inconvenience to a major pain in the neck.

If you are able to use AirSharing doesn't that mean you have a WiFi network available? If so, can't you just email the thing off of your laptop, why are you moving it to the iPhone.

You don't need to already be on a wi-fi network to transfer to/from AirSharing -- you can create one from your laptop, thus enabling the file transfer. But you're still not on the Internet, leaving my problem intact.

MMS to Apple is like Mcdonalds finally after years of complaining from their customers, putting cheese on their burgers

Now the funny thing about that is that I HATED when McDonald's did that. Now I have to special order just to get a hamburger without cheese.

I guess iit just goes to show, you can't please all of the people all of the time.

this thread just proves the futility of trying to please all of the people all of the time. Not only do people all want different features but some "features" are actually negatives to some posters (e.g. the guy who opposes even a tethering option b/c it would cripple the network).

Now imagine being apple and trying to make everyone happy. I hope the poor iphone software engineers don't read these boards.

I have an unlimited tariff which I'm marooned on at the moment. If the service provider changes the terms and conditions of the contract then I can get out of the contract. Hopefully this new OS 3.0 will make the iphone what it should have been in the first place.

What could happen if tethering is allowed is that the providers may pull the unlimited tariffs and go for capped ones like mentioned above with a limited download.

The providers can always bum you with the 'fair usage' policy however :(

All I want....

is a half-way decent voice dial interface to your BlueTooth headset! There are some ok apps VD Apps out there, but this feature needs to be native to the iPhone. I can't be yelling at my phone while driving so that my VD can take me to a list. NO Pressing a button on the screen! If other cellphones can do this without eating a whole lot of space, THIS can be done on the iPhone. Stop playing!

I'm sorry but that is absolutely ridiculous. Even the richest dude in the world could clearly see that agreeing to something like that would be throwing money away. If that's the case I will not be using that feature. As a matter of fact I am about through with AT&T. The funny thing is, I am not usually one to rant much. I must say though, Apple needs to start looking for other carriers. Yes I knew what I signed up for, but I am now seeing that they continue to increase package prices and hidden fees.

That my friend, is why I've put off getting an iPhone for so long. I love T-Mobile and really am not looking forward to having to deal with ATT again. (When they were originally ATT, it was awesome stuff. Since Cingular took them over, it is crap-o-la all around.)

And yes; I feel like John McCain for saying "my friend."

can you explain how to do this if it's not to much trouble? i have a macbook and would love this feature to move pictures around while on the go. thanks!
