All I want for Christmas:

1. Stand-alone turn by turn GPS navigation (a la TomTom)

2. Cut and Paste

3. 802.11n

4. Limited background operations

3. 802.11n

Is it just me or does no one else realize that 802.11 b/g is already WAY faster than what the iPhone can process and would be completely useless? Not to mention that b/g is already faster than home broadband connections (b/g transmits at 54 Mbps, 90% of broadband providers are 16 Mbps max), and even in places with T1 connections you are likely sharing bandwidth with many other users.

Nah, 802.11n isn't coming to the iPhone anytime soon.

Any slot like an SD slot or MicroSD is extremely dumb, and will never happen. It's just not Apple.

And plus, why? 16GB is plenty for a phone. And soon we will have 32GB.

Why? Because I've got 16.5GB of stuff on my ipod not including video and don't want to be carrying both! So am waiting for a decent amount of memory 32/64

Would like to see a faster processor. I think I read that the current processor is running at only half speed. Although this is fine for most, I use ePocrates (a drug database) that has significant lags. Maybe it's the program itself.

Also on the list:

- voice dialing
- 32 GB
- mail icon updates unread mail count when a user reads the email on another computer, MobileMe website, etc.
- weather icon displays current temp
- if a person calls and leaves a voicemail, only show unread voice messages (don't show it as both a missed call and a voicemail)
- ability to call without unlocking the phone (i.e., when you hit the home button, the favorites screen pops up and you can dial directly without unlocking by double or triple tapping the person to call)

Do you not consider the range improvement from the multi-path nature of 802.11n to be an advantage?

thats only addresses part of the problem.
video capture does say natively and copy and paste is still not real copy and paste even jailbroken.
I know alot about jailbreaking actually

Native features never matter on the iPhone. The device can either do it or not.

That is true because of the app store. but i dont like that attitude to let developers deal with the gaps they should have filled themself. but yeah you have a good point.

I also think they are going to pitch this as quite the gaming machine. With the ads they are running now plus putting $5 million dollars into imaginaion technologies. As powerful as it is now i cant wait to see what 3.0 has to offer.

My number one would have to be background processes. I really, really want to be able to browse Safari while listening to streaming radio (or Pandora/Last.fm) without jailbreaking. Even FlyCast doesn't allow that from what I can tell.

Other things:
Video capture
More streamlined email inbox - I have four accounts and switching's a pain. I also hate waiting for emails to load.
Easy toggle 3G/wifi (again w/o jailbreak).
Proxies on Safari for BBC iPlayer. ;)
Cut and paste (not all that important to me, but I do agree the iPhone should have it)

Hardware wise, I don't think the camera's really that bad but it could be the greatest improvement, aside from more RAM (which would allow background processes), drive space and better batteries.

ETA - if Slingbox can't have an app yet, then I'd really like to at least pair my iPhone with my Palm TX via bluetooth so I can watch it there.

Another major ETA - Flash!!! I know nobody wants ads, but there's just too many videos that can't be viewed to have the full internet experience. I really hope some solution can be found.

I want to control the phone from the computer.

Right now my iPhone is at the other end of the room and I just received an SMS, it would be cool if I can read the SMS from my mac and reply to it, and if the phone rings, my Mac would tell me who's calling and I can answer from my computer.

I remember this was possible with a Nokia Phone under Panther over Bluetooth. Not the making phone calls over the computer. But the SMS and knowing who's calling you without looking at the phone. :D

Also, wouldn't it be cool if Apple TV was integrated with iPhone so it would pause a movie during a call and display the caller in the middle of the TV screen?

Telus has this sort of feature if you have call disply and TV services through them your TV will deisplay the caller ID of the person calling and also give the option to dicline the call and i think answer it too (not sure about answering though)

features i'd like to see?

copy paste
video recording
landscape mode for sms (easier to type)
customizable backgrounds and themes like summberboard for the 1.1.4 JB ipod touch

All I want is a better battery, the ability to record video, and a more stable OS.
