The 3.1 changelog lists a fix for bluetooth interference with wifi, so there IS a wifi improvement in this update.

I have not experienced wifi problems with 3.0, other than needing to turn off bluetooth to get good performance playing a head-to-head game in the "10Pin Shuffle" game. Otherwise it's choppy. Hopefully 3.1 will fix it. But I'm waiting for a 3.1 jailbreak before I can update and find out.

That was just for bluetooth though. Most of the issues being reported had nothing to do with whether bluetooth was on or not. So, I don't think they did anything to fix this by software.

3.1 didn't fix it, but

Have you tried changing the channel your router uses? Worked for me.

I wish I had read this before I went back to the Apple Store for the third time.

So, this is what happened to me.

When I switched from a belkin to a Time Capsule, my 3GS started having major connection issues. I did everything I could think of, then called AppleCare. They had me repeat some steps that I had done, then told to make a Genius appointment.

The Genius couldn't see the problem, but she replaced my phone anyway.

The new phone had the same wifi issues, PLUS touchscreen issues.

Back to the Apple Store.

This "Genius" told me that he couldn't find a problem, and maybe it's with the TC (even though everything else connects to the network just fine). Told me to bring that in for another appointment.

I went home and called AppleCare again. This time, she had me do the same stuff on the phone, and then made another Genius appointment for me.

Back to the Apple Store. The Genius saw and fixed my touchscreen issue (hallelujah!!), but couldn't figure out the wifi thing. Suggested everything I had already done. Told me to go home, call AppleCare once more, and then come in with my TC and my iPhone for a diagnostic on both.

I go home, call AppleCare, she has me repeat two steps, and then transfers me to a Time Capsule specialist. He asks me everything I've done, tells me to change the channel on the G network, and voilá!

That was about nine hours ago, and my iPhone hasn't lost the comnection once (fingers crossed).

All the suggestions for resetting everything under the sun, and consults with half a dozen "specialists," and no one thought about the channel. I had done more on my own than anyone had suggested, and I didn't think about the channels.

I live in a 64-unit condo with networks all around, visible and invisible. It wasn't an issue with my old Belkin, or my 3G, but the combination of the Time Capsule and the 3GS was a perfect storm, I guess.

Wow.

Hopefully your one of the lucky ones. You probably need a few days to know for sure. The signal bars are the best way to check if you still have the problem. If you are next to your router and the signal drops from 3 to 1 bar then the problem is still there. I have actually put the phone on top of my router and seen the signal bars go up and down like a yo yo. It makes playing wifi games with my wife and her iphone 3g a nightmare.

36 hours and it's still working perfectly. I know I need time to determine if it's really resolved, but I was having that up and down signal constantly, without moving at all. The worst was when it went down to 1 bar, so it looked connected, but couldn't actually do anything. This is no longer happening. Actually, none of it is happening. It's working just as it should, connecting upon wake, staying connected, e-mail pushing just as fast as to my MBP, no problems (knock wood). It's as if the last couple of weeks hadn't happened.

I still have problems after changing channels to 6 & 11, I am going try change it to channel 1. Hopefully it should lock on without any drops.

What channels are you guys switching to (1, 6 & 11 are the non overlapping channels). I have Verizon FIOS Actiontec router which was set to 'Automatically select channel' before, but now even after trying it couple of times, it still exhibits the same issue.

I have that 1 bar problem!!! I am sooo changing my channel:p

I just changed my channels to 11 from Automatic. Wish me luck:) and post your results!

I'm calling my problem resolved. :)

And my Time Capsule was set to automatic also, but the TC guy told me to pick either 9 or 11. I went with 9, and that seems to have done the trick.

Let us know your results too.

Yes!!

Thank goodness 3.1 has fixed my wifi issue!! This was my biggest beef with the phone. I am a happy customer again.:D

For me the "yo-yo bars" problem STARTED with the upgrade to 3.1. I was fine with 3.0.1, and started to have it after the upgrade. I notice it primarily when I auto reconnect when I get in range. Under 3.0.1, as I got in range it would start at 1 bar and then as I got closer to the access point the signal strength would improve. Now, under 3.1 I often have it "stuck" at 1 bar even when I'm within inches of the wireless router. Turning WiFi off and then on (temporarily) fixes the problem.

Did it need fixing? I thought you just had to specify G network and take your router off auto a/b/g.

Or is this another different issue.

Why would you accept having to modify your router for just the iPhone?

I still have the signal strength drop issue with 3.1 no matter what channel I have on my router. One thing I have noticed is that I dont necessarily lose WIFI connection (can still browse at 1 bar), just that the signal drops abruptly and comes back again. With 3.0 my signal would drop and the connection would be lost, at least its not that.

I can attest this was an issue with v3.0, I'll explain...

Last year (2008) while visiting my uncle's house I enabled the WiFi option on their Telmex "Infinitum" DSL unit; obv. I was using a v2.x of the iPhone F/W & without any issues. This year (2009) I had a huge problem with the signal & also not staying active either - sometimes it would ask me for the damn pass phrase or forgot the network completely. This went on for almost a week until I had enough, plugged my laptop & D/L the latest v3.1 on the date it came out. Once the iPhone updated everything WiFi related was like back in 2008!

So yeah, I'd say there was a huge bug in v3.0

Flaky wifi network

My husband and I both have 3G iphones with sw version 3.1.2. His phone works fine on our home wireless network, but mine does not. I didn't have any problems connecting and staying connected until recently. I have reset my network settings on the phone several times with no improvement. Help!

I'm seeing this issue with my gen 1 iPhone. Oddly it just developed overnight no change in OS/firmware version.

If I figure anything out I will let you all know.

I'd tried everything apart fro the router channel change. Just done that. No difference (changed my Sky router from 11 to 9 and then to 6).

I'm really hoping Apple have an update for this soon (unless it's an antenna issue we're all having).

I thought I should post an update after getting good results with a different router and channel.

I had the FIOS Actiontec router which only allowed for WEP and I used it with Mac ID filtering. After switching to cable internet now I brought back my old Belkin G router. I am using WPA on channel 1 and haven't lost connection in a month on three different levels of my house.

Changing the router solved it for me.

Only got my 3GS two days ago and started getting dropped wifi, I read a post on here about reseting the network settings and it hasn't dropped since. No need to change anything on the router.

General --> Reset --> Reset network settings

2G iphone won't detect wifi either

Everyone's Wifi issue here seems to be dropped connections, or slow speed.

My issue is that my iPhone doesn't detect ANY Wifi. My Wife's iPhone detects and connects to Wifi, but mine acts like there is none.

Anyone have this issue, and if so, does 3.1 fix it? (I'm reluctant to upgrade immediately because it would remove the jailbreak.)

Yeah, this is my issue too. Both of my roommates have 3g iphones without any problem connecting to my router, but my "new-to-me" 2G iphone won't detect any wifi anywhere unless just out of the freezer?! Anyone know wtf?
