I posted this before but I feel it's worth posting again.

There is no 'one size to fit all'. When it comes to phones.

1) People who who say 3.5" is perfect, you do not speak for everyone, what about those with big hands. It's not perfect for me or lots of other people. What's wrong with wanting something to suit my physical build? Everything else comes in different sizes, why can't my mobile devices do that too? Why must we be forced to change OS when Apple could simply profit off another line of phones and keep up happy?

2) People who want 4" or bigger, you (or rather we) are not the majority. MacRumors is not representative of the iOS market-share as a whole, only of people who frequent MacRumors. You have your right to defend you wanting of a bigger screen, but no one wants to see thread after thread after thread with what is basically the same poll every time. If you really want change, email Apple and tell them what you want and why, they might listen.

It's not a great point, if your thumbs can only reach the side of the screen of an iPhone, then you have really really small hands.

In which case the size of your...screen...is the least of your worries! :)

As for the "thumbs can't reach that far", that depends on your hands. Here's a popular pic to post in defence of smaller screens compared to my thumb range:

I don't mind the 3.5" screen.. But after using a Nexus S for a little while I wouldn't say no to a 4" screen either. Any bigger and I would say too large. Like the Dell streak:eek:

Guys like the OP are the one's who will ride Apple's d hard once a larger screen is introduced. It's funny actually. Only once it becomes a reality, will it be the "PERFECT' screen too. ;)

Hey numbnut, Nexus Prime is not even available for pre order yet. But the demand has been high so far.

In the news article, the pre order for the 4s is high, because... well there aren't any other good phones to pre order atm.

How can demand be high for a phone (Nexus Prime) that hasn't even been revealed or available for preorder yet? You can predict the future?

If they can increase the screen size without increasing the dimensions of the phone, then I'd be all for it. But I don't want a bigger phone and the current screen size doesn't really bother me.

This thread makes me think about the original iMac keynote. Steve Said something to the effect of how current PC's only come with 13" or 14" screens. Then he asked, "What is the biggest size screen anyone would ever want on a personal compute?" Then he revealed that the iMac had a 15" screen.

This is a great point.

3.5 Inches

Personally, I think I still might want a tad bit bigger screen...

Agree 100%. The ideal screen size for me is the biggest I can comfortably use one-handed. Perhaps a little bigger that 3.5 but not much. I've tried 4.3 and that's way too big.

Btw, I think I have fairly average sized hands for a man.

People act like when apple invented the touchscreen smartphone market the did not put any consideration into what size it should be. They surely spent more time dealing with that issue than anyone else ever has.

These bigger screens exist just because they hope someone might buy their phone because it is different. The 3.5" screen size came as a deliberate decision to create the best smartphone experience possible.

Nothing in the world has changed to mitigate or modify that reality. If apple invented touchscreen smartphones with 4.5" screens android handset makers would be making 5.5" and 3" devices.

Apple has always made these decisions very carefully and deliberately so a great deal of thought has gone into having a 3.5" screen. As John gruber noted apple could have made the screen any size they wanted when they invented the touchscreen smartphone.

The iPhone 4 is an amazing device. Between size, weight, display, form and battery life it strikes a near perfect balance.

I think you're in denial. Thankfully Apple didn't chose a 2.5" screen in 2007 because the Apple apologists would probably argue that is the perfect size haha!

You know apple did not randomly pick a 3.5" screen right?

The iPad has really spoiled me about screen size. iPhone used to be big enough, but now I do all my gaming on iPad. I would like a slightly bigger screen.

I can only imagine the stress on developers:
iPhone 4 brings retina display
This imaginary iPhone brings a 4 inch screen...

Developers are then all over the place, supporting the 4, iPad, a bigger screened iPhone and possibly a retina display iPad later.

Apple does not want to fracture its products, which all of you seem to want them to do.

Yeah people don't realize apple has to consider all kinds of factors when making their device that android handset makers don't worry about. Ever having an os upgrade is not really a concern on android. Usability is only a minor concern.

If apple and htc had a screen size change checklist htc would have 6 items on it and apple 600

If you want a bigger screen get a tablet, nuff said.

So a tablet = a phone?

My Atrix has a 4" screen and it just barely bigger than the 4. Actually I think the physical size of the 4 is a bit small. The problem with the iPhone is Apple knows that they can do next to nothing and they'll still sell millions. They showed a pic of the 4s next to the Inspire and Atrix showing that it was capable of the same data speed even though the Inspire came out in February and the Atrix came out in March. They're playing catch up right now. The 4s is a pretty weak offering for 16 months of work.

Your attic has no support a crappy ecosystem and an inferior os. Not to mention any number of inferior real life performance issues

Maybe it's time that Apple make iOS resolution independent? That way it doesn't matter what the screen size is and developers have an easy way to develop for all devices

That is amazing considering att was the only us provider for the previous 4 launches. Will anyone be left to buy the prime except die hard androids?

No not really. Half the people are women.

It all depends on how small or large your hands are. Do you really think ballers (basketballers) like using a 3.5" smartphone screen? How about a huge 5" phone for a 5'2" girl? Not to be discriminating against women of course....

I'm sure having larger screen + great resolution is great for videos. But that's why an iPad is great for that purpose. It just seems everyone is so worked up about 1280x720 4.6" screen that's coming soon from samsung that somehow this will be the defining size for everyone to use. There comes the maximum limit to how big of a screen size you will want to hold on to and use and whether it will it fit in your jeans comfortably.

Your pictures are kind of wrong, unless I'm holding my phone wrong. The range of motion of your thumb when holding a phone comfortably should originate from the bottom left or right corner of the phone (depending on which hand you are holding it with) and extend outward toward the opposing corner of the phone.

I have smaller hands for a man and can reach every part of the iPhone's screen when holding with only my right hand. The top left corner is almost out of reach, so I have to stretch a bit. On my Droid 2, however, which has a 3.7" widescreen display, I have to change the positioning of the phone in my and and stretch to reach the top left hand corner of the screen when holding it in my right hand.

Not many people consider the aspect ratio difference of iPhones and droids, but I think that also plays a big role in usability.

I have argued that it may never change from 3.5"

About a year ago or so, I argued that it'll maybe never change with the iPhone.
For someone with average sized hands, 3.5" is the ideal sized screen to allow you to hold the device in one hand and touch all 4 corners on the screen easily. The top opposite corner is the furthest stretch and anything larger requires two handed operation for average folks.

This is the single reason I think it'll stay the same.
