The 3.5 inch is more beneficial to me, because I'm not a big gamer and my eyes are rather good. The current size fits nicely in my pocket. Love it, but this doesn't mean I wouldn't mind a 4" screen. The screen size is nice. I feel you OP, But I too feel you are in denial somewhat. If Apple never upgrades the screen size, I'll never complain.

All this rubbish. The reason apple had to settle for a small screen in the design is battery consumption. More screen, more drainage. It's far from a perfect size and according to the case leaks, apple are set for a larger screen upgrade next year

Totally agree.

The nubs who think differently should go get some android mini-tablet-phone junk.

The android-affected and naysayers all need to read this. Relevant discussion about screen sizes.

Sorry but this is pretty ridiculous. I really hate people who get testy with others who want a larger screen on their iPhone and tell them to go Android. Gruber did it too. Really, really, smug. Also it's a stupid counter because you are suggesting a different OS (and most of us are happy w/iOS) and there is still not a single screen as sharp as the retina display on the market.

Also that Gruber article led me to delete DF from my bookmarks. I don't appreciate anyone basically chastising me because, God forbid, I think Apple could make a hardware improvement at some point.

Gruber is officially an Apple apologist IMO. Maybe he always was but this is the nail in the coffin for me.

I agree with the OP being in denial and I roll my eyes at anyone who claims "what we have now is perfect" because technology will always evolve so our Pentium IV, OSX Panther, 3.5" Screens and ultra thin notebooks WILL be improved some day soon.

Personally, I feel a 4" screen is ideal but if Apple didn't want to go bigger just yet then I'd at least prefer they at least maximized the surface area by reducing the bezel

I know the girly fingers of some people here may not stretch all the way across the screen but most normal people would appreciate the extra screen space.

Well I got alot of negatives and many disagreeing with me in this thread so I will ask a few questions

*How did you cope with a tiny, non colour screen phone ten years ago? How did you later cope with the physical phone becoming smaller, smaller buttons (K850i anybody?)

*If it's all about screen size how come Blackberry sells well with a 2"6 inch screen? Design? Software like BBM maybe? So people also like IOS?

*Nobody think companies like LG and Samsung just think "bigger" is better every year to sell more devices? Remember the camera phone war they tried to tell us 12 MP cameras were best now the rise of smart phones seen phones drop to 3.2 and 5MP camera only now the Iphone is putting a decent cameras in. Truth is the 5MP camera on the Iphone 4 is great better than many of these past phones. I suspect it's not a case of Samsung or LG think 4" is a better screen size they just like to increase it every year the Galaxy had a 4" screen the S2 went 4"3. Next year 4"5 maybe? I can see it coming to a stage in the future where they can do all they can with screens and move on to something else. Many phones even high end now get released with a screen as little as 3" as people still like the idea of a "MOBILE" small enough to put in there pocket.

*Anybody agree that the Galaxy S2 is just too big?

*So the polls say people want a bigger phone? Probably as they see Android as better but if they actually move over they moan the phone is crap built quality, too big for a pocket, poor app store, crashes, freezes, a new model released 3 months later.

And could they have made the current Iphone bigger? Not without making it more ugly. Perhaps with a slim down redesign Iphone 5 they can do a 4" screen but if the Iphone 4S cotuines to sell well they may keep the current design and just add a metal back to the next model.

I use to own a LG Viewty and remember it being very Iphone before the Iphoine became cool all the best Samsung phones went out of production as they went Android to compete with the Apple app store. Phones like Pixon, Pixon 12, Tocco Lite, Viewty Snap they all had a very unique design but now the new models all copy Apple.

Everybody I know with Android and Blackberry want an Iphone. I've also heard people move from Iphone to Blackberry for a change so it can be a fashion thing too.

I expect there will be a debate on the Ipad 3 should it get a bigger screen because of the new Galaxy tabs. But all those moaning should decide if screen size is *your first* priority change to Samsung but if it's not you are probably wise enough to know the current Iphone is good. Just because they said in 2006 the Iphone screen is the size it is doesn't mean it needs upgrading because it already has with Retina displays.

And people need to consider the tablet market if they want a good mobile screen. I think a "small phone" and decent size tablet is the perfect mix.

----------

Oh whatever, just STOP, because when apple upgrades the screen size to 3.7 to 4.0 inches in the future. you will be barking about how perfect those sizes are just perfect.

If Apple make a phone I don't like I'd change to another. Sony Ericsson made great phones for years between 2005 and 2009 I bought there phones and the Satio and C905 were failures. There new phones lack ideas and innovation. I loved the Iphone 4 as it was quite unique maybe something I'd have expected from Sony Ericsson.

The fact they kept the current design is a bonus for me so yes I'm upgrading the Iphone 4 to an S.

Also that Gruber article led me to delete DF from my bookmarks. I don't appreciate anyone basically chastising me because, God forbid, I think Apple could make a hardware improvement at some point.

I actually laughed at you comment. God forbid...improvement. You are doing the same thing. You--larger is an obvious improvement. Gruber--3.5" is obviously the perfect size. Great to see people who don't want to listen to views that differ than there own.

For the record, I would like to have as large a screen as possible that can be fit in the same form factor device. The difference for me is I am not so caught up in my own views to realize that Apple is never going to be a bespoke phone builder and as this thread alone shows, there is no consensus. I assume Apple spends more time thinking about the best size (taking into account things such as ergonomics, battery life and it's own profitability).

Praise for the 3"5 inch screen perfect size for a phone.

Don't want a bigger screen ever.

Who agrees?

I wouldn't mind a slightly bigger screen on the iPhone but I'm not getting bent out of shape like some guys. The 3.5" screen feels small some times and good other times.

If screen size is your biggest complaint, don't bitch about it, just go buy something else and move on.

You'll eat those words when Apple launches a 4" iPhone 6 next year, and you'll buy it.

4" screen is where it's at, and perfectly possible by keeping it in the similar form factor. It's not difficult, it's just Apple being arrogant, and people blindly following them.

Exactly. This has been Apple's thing all along. Convincing people to buy something they didn't know they wanted/needed.

Apple could come out with a 22" inch iPhone and people would be clamoring at the bit to be the first one to get it, and discussing where they could get see-through backpacks to carry it in so everyone could see them with it.

Yeah, I also can remember years back when 3.5" was a big screen on a phone.. seems apple is stuck in the past when it comes to certain areas.

yup, stuck in the past with the #1 phone

get real dude

:apple:

The same way we dealt with 2" thick notebooks and $1000 for a "large screen" 27in square TV. Something awesome in 1978, 2001 or 2010 does not mean it's awesome now because technology is constantly evolving and our tastes grow to match it.
*If it's all about screen size how come Blackberry sells well with a 2"6 inch screen? Design? Software like BBM maybe? So people also like IOS?
Using RIM as an example of anything positive is laughable because they're a dying company due precisely to the fact that they are resting on their laurels. Apple has yet to hit their peak in mobile so to think "this is it and this is perfect" is silly and we should all glad that people who are so easily satisfied with what we have now aren't in charge of what we'll see next year.

*Anybody agree that the Galaxy S2 is just too big?
Yes. But thats a personal opinion and others will differ. So the fact that choice is important in a marketplace then I'm still glad it exists. And BTW, your idea of making it 3.5" OR 4.2"

And could they have made the current Iphone bigger? Not without making it more ugly.
Really? Apple is INCAPABLE of making a good looking phone with a bigger screen than what we have now? Ugh. I really wish I read this far before commenting because you clearly are stuck in a singular way of thinking so I'll just end it with this.

Your lack of faith disturbs me...

All these people claiming that pro-3.5" people will suddenly become pro-4.0" people as soon as Apple comes out with a 4.0", you'll then be the ones saying that the 4.0" is too small, and you really want a 4.5".

Thankfully, Apple cares only about user experience, not one-upsmanship. Let the other companies make their ridiculously huge phones you need two hands to operate. They never sell as well as the iPhone with its 3.5" screen. Apple will keep providing an easy device for everyone to enjoy using, based on good design instead of worrying about spec numbers.

Um, excuse me? How exactly do you contend that I don't want to listen to other views? Because I disagree with Gruber?

I read Gruber's article. Never once does he concede that a larger screen would be better. If anything he hints that he'd be open to a SMALLER screen. Which blows my mind.

What I hate more than anything about Gruber's article is that he won't concede my point, which is that there are clear benefits/advantages to keeping the iPhone's form factor but giving us a 4" screen. There really is no way to dismiss my point. Sure, you can love your 3.5" screen until your heart explodes, but again, if I hand you (or anybody for the matter) an iPhone with dimensions basically identically to a 4S, equal battery life, but with a 4" retina display, how exactly are you going to even come up with a single reason why you wouldn't want that? Exactly.

The irony here is that your words, "Great to see people who don't want to listen to views that differ than there own." actually pertain 100% to Gruber and not me. I also find it odd that you admit you would want essentially the same thing that I want and countless others do, (A larger screen, retina, same form factor.), and yet you feel the need to call me out on being obtuse in my view when I'm actually the opposite.

There is no consensus? There can never be a consensus. Screen size is an issue that will always have a varied opinion. However I will say this: The overall reaction to the 4S is VERY different than previous iPhone's.* Why? Because what people want.......changes. It seems that is a fact that you and Gruber don't want to understand or can't. Apple doesn't have to make a larger screen because Android is. Clearly. But don't tell me that there isn't simply a larger cry for a larger retina display versus in the past. Because there is. And not just from tech geeks or journalist but the public at large.

Does everybody want a larger retina display? No. Of course not. But do more people bemoan the fact that there isn't one in the fall of 2011 vs. in previous months and years? You bet your ass they do. Gruber can slam his fist down on the desk and proclaim 3.5" is ideal/perfect/unnecessary to ever change. He is dead wrong.

* Spare me the 4S pre-order sales retort. The 4S will be a huge hit, clearly, it already is, but the general reaction to it's unveiling was very different than previous iPhone's because what the general wants from an iPhone is changing. (The desire for a larger screen is increasing as time passes.)

All these people claiming that pro-3.5" people will suddenly become pro-4.0" people as soon as Apple comes out with a 4.0", you'll then be the ones saying that the 4.0" is too small, and you really want a 4.5".

and you'll be right there to tell them that 4.0" is actually the "perfect" size.

The so-called "general reaction" to the unveiling has only taken place on a few web forums and blogs because of a small and vocal minority. It is hardly representative of the market as a whole. This is the biggest iPhone launch of all time, the numbers clearly show that (what few have been given out so far), so obviously the general reaction is buy baby buy not some weeping lament for the screen size not changing.

----------

and you'll be right there to tell them that 4.0" is actually the "perfect" size.

No, because I actually like being able to use my phone comfortably with one hand. When I want a bigger screen, I use an actual computer (or perhaps someday a tablet, so long as it's still comfortable to hold).

So because people are buying it, that means that they couldn't possible have wanted a bigger screen size? Got it.

Apple could have made a 4" screen or even a 5" screen on the iPhone in 2006/2007 if they had wanted. There was no technological limitation preventing them from doing that.

There has also not been any big change in what people do on these devices that all of a sudden now makes a bigger screen actually more useful.

Yeah they could have, if they wanted to have a phone with a 30 minute battery life.

Praise for the 3"5 inch screen perfect size for a phone.

I am satisfied however if they are going to increase the screen size, no more than 4" otherwise it just becomes too big and I like the 3.5" screen now.

Thats crap and you know it.

Apple did put a bigger screen in because of battery life, nothing else. If they could keep the same form factor and the same or better battery life they would.

I don't think that they will go over 4, but it will get bigger when the battery life can remain the same or get better. I don't think they will go bigger for the sake of going bigger. When they can get the same form factor with a bigger screen it will happen. And not a minute sooner.

If you're not happy get a Android phone. Less battery life and bigger form factor and bigger screen. Win, win for you.
