You would keep your family plan, add the iPhone unlimited data for $30 and unlimited text messages for $20. Sucks I know.

No you wouldn't.
He said he already has the $30 unlimited family texting.
Therefore, his cost will only go up $30 a month.

I'm sure the plan he has for unlimited data and text is the Media Unlimited plan. It was my understanding from speaking the the ATT rep was that you would not be allowed to use that data plan with the iPhone.

Oh, I was unaware there was a $30 unlimited data and text plan...
I'm aware of the $30 unlimited text and MMS plan though, which is what can be used on a family plan with iPhone.

I am on a family plan I am going to upgrade to the 3G iPhone. I am already paying extra for unlimited texts so if I just upgrade to the 3G iPhone and my dad stays with the 1st gen iPhone are bill will only go up $10 right?

did you move this? or did i? how do i move it back to a single question?
okay, well actually, i think my dad would need data as well.

Okay, so it would cost 160 dollars? unless we wanted 700 minutes, then it would cost 140? lol, and do you know how much verizon charges for cancellation fees?

That's the way I understand it, yes. And I have no idea how much Verizon charges for cancellation, sorry; I've never dealt with them before. But I'm sure other people in the thread will have. :)

If I went into an AT&T store, would they tell me how much we would pay for the plan even though the 3G iPhone is not out yet?
thanks for being so nice to me because im a "newbie" but im not new to board posting. I have over 7k on IGN Boards. Also, I don't think I'll be able to switch over because of the over expensive plan. :(

and do you know how much verizon charges for cancellation fees?

$175 per line to cancel. However, a recent law passed stated that all carriers must take $5 off that per month while you are in contract, although I don't know when it goes into effect. So, for example, if you're 1 month into a 24 month contract, you'd pay $175 - $5 (x 1) = $170 per line. If you were 23 months into your contract, you'd pay $175 - $5 (x 23) = $60 per line.

Also, in all honesty, its not over-expensive compared to Verizon. Go look at Verizon's costs for a Blackberry. You'll pay $200 (or more) for the phone, and $45 per month for the data service, and still pay for text messaging.

Okay. so i have been with them for 17 months.
So that would be 175 - 5(17) = 90 per line.
So it would be 180 dollars for 2 people? Geesh. that is still too expensive, imo.

Ok, I was looking into it some more, and here's what I found. Digg had something up about the FCC meeting today.

The pro-rated portion of an ETF has not yet gone through. Its a proposal and nothing has been decided. Verizon still does do this though.

This quote is from a post on Digg found here: http://digg.com/tech_news/AT_T_Termination_Fees_Ultimately_A_Great_Deal_for_Consumers

Alltel: $200 per phone line
CellularOne: $200 per phone line
Centennial: $250 per phone line
AT&T: $175 per phone line
Nextel: $200 per phone line
Sprint: $200 per phone line
T-Mobile: $200 per phone line
Verizon: Prorated (Starting at $175 per phone line, Drops Each Month $5)

Initial coverage with the pro-rated ETF idea:

Today's story which explains how AT&T feels that ETFs are good for consumers and consumers like them (which is why there are tons of class action lawsuits over them...)

Verizon currently does what I said before, $175 - ($5 x # of months into contract). The FCC is getting involved, and may change it so that EVERY carrier does the same thing, and that the initial fee is the same for all carriers.

First off, is this site correct with the rates?
And then secondly, So if my Dad and I share a plan with 1400 minutes it would cost $130, right?
$30 - Data Plan
$90 - 1,400 Minutes
$10 - An Additional line (Me because my Dad would be the "owner" of the plan)

I'm a little confused by the pricing. From the article, which I've edited a little, states:

While the lowest rate plan for the original iPhone was $59.99 (for 450 anytime minutes, plus unlimited data), iPhone 3G users will pay for their voice and data separately, with a combined plan starting at $69.99.

Personal accounts will need pay $30 per month for unlimited 3G data, while business accounts will pay $45 per user.

Of course, you’ll also need to sign up for a voice account, plans are as follows:

450 minutes: $39.99
900 minutes: $59.99
1,350 minutes: $79.99
Unlimited: $99.99

So for the 3G an individual needs to pay a minimum of $70, plus the $30 for unlimited 3G data, PLUS another $40 - $100 for voice account? So an individual rate STARTING is $140? Am I reading that right?

Im confused of what your saying? What is this voice account? And is it necessary?
So If I want a family plan with my father sister and brother how much would it be?
wouldnt it be

30-for 3g
90- for 1400 minutes
30 -3 additions (my bro father and sister)
Wouldnt it be 150 bucks?

So with 150 would I be getting everything? Or would I be missing features?

It depends. It is 30 dollars for EACH data plan. So if only you had the data plan, then yes, that part is correct. 90 for 1400 is correct. You would be the owner of the bill? But yeah. 4 people would be 30 dollars because of the 3 additions. You are correct. Unless other people are going to be using data on your plan.

No, you're reading it very wrong. The "minimum of $70" INCLUDES the $30 for data and $40 for the 450 minute plan. It was just breaking down the pricing of that $70, not saying you need to pay the $70 and THEN those things.
