iPhone 3G- how to use no data plan

The only other thing I can think of is to call AT&T, explain that my wife wants to *TRY* her iPhone with the data package for a day or two and if she doesn't like it, cancel it. The next day I cancel it. At worst I'll have to pay for the 1 day of data service but I'll be able to activate the phone. :confused:

why dont you just jailbreak it and check "activate iphone"

I thought about that but didn't know which jailbreak to use (or how to do it) so forgot about it, LOL.
If you have any tips, I may just try that tonight before calling them. :D
 
Hate to dig up an old thread but i searched and this seems to be most relevant to me.

So I was think of picking up a 3g iphone and using nothing but wifi, since I'm on campus and I think we will be getting city wide wifi. I am already with att but don't want to pay the 30$ data plan. I already use my touch as a wifi device so I know I wouldn't mind the lack of 3g/edge.

So my question is
Will I be fine with any 3g once I JB and unlock it?
Will the method in this first part of this thread work to disable the egde/3g?
Any other tutorials I should look over?

This is the way I see it,
I buy a 3g from CL
JB and unlock
Do the thing on the first page
Success?

I couldn't get my 1st gen to work but it seems like others have. Probably just me, LOL. I'm back to using it as a Touch with a camera since I can't get it to work as a phone. :rolleyes:

I'm getting a 4G. I'm giving my 3G to my wife who's got a normal old phone. She doesn't NOT need data and we don't have the $30/month for it.

Does this process still work? Do I need to JB or unlock it for her (she's got an AT&T SIM card)? If I JB it and use SBsettings and turn off 3G and Edge, does that do the same thing?

i gave my parents the old 3g after i upgraded to an iphone 4. sim card worked fine. i installed the profile to not get data. at&t account recognized it as iphone 3g but didn't ask me to get a data plan. i guess we will see but so far it works.
 
hmmmm...is this still working??

just install this and call ATT, or can I go into my account online and remove the iPhone data plan??
 
I'm doing the same thing with the iPhone 3GS. Wife has cheap phone with Virgin in Canada, and wants an iPod touch. So I got the 3GS. It does both, but she doesn't need the data plan as we have wifi everywhere except in the car, and one shouldn't be doing that right.
Besides, data plans in Canada are outrageous.
This makes perfect sense to me.
 
Is this info still good in light of the new jailbreak? Or is there a better method?

what do you mean in light of the new jailbreak?

so for the website mentioned to work and not be charged with a data plan you need the following

1. activate SIM card
2. previously activated iphone
3. download the profile on the website.
 
iphone unlock and data blocking

I too am wondering about being able to use iphone without data. Here is my situation. My husband wants an iphone, on his current plan with ATT we have blocked data on his samsung phone, his phone is pretty basic anyway, he has never had data. I currently have an iphone 3gs with the unlimited data. I was going to get the new iphone 4 and give him my iphone 3gs. If I put his card in the iphone 3gs will he still have the data blocked and be able to use my old iphone without being charged for data. He is planning on using the wifi only and does not want to pay for data. He does not want internet and is happy to use the wifi.

Also if I need to jail break and unlock the phone for him to be able to use it without being charged for data will he:confused: be able to use itunes to get apps, or is there another place I can go to get apps that will not affect the jailbreak and unlock?

If it's on ios 4, turn cellular data off as well. You'll be able to use iphone without data until att does their imei sweep and catches you
