At last an advantage to living in NZ:D

That said we have no idea how much it will cost and what data plans you will have to sign up for and for how long. Thanks Vodafone, your great. I guess we'll be drip fed that bit of information a bit closer to the date.

Bring it on.

having spoken to Vodafone.
not alot of their staff know anything either
I think a few things still need to be finalised

for those on the UK that are unsure about porting your number from another carrier of works as follows:

you can request PAC code at any time (however if you are still in contract you need to pay remaining months)

Once requested they must the PAC code within 2 working days (as per OFCOM regulation).

The PAC code is valid for 30 days.

If not used then contract continues as normal.

Once used it takes a week for number to transfer.

Once transferd the old contract is automatically terminated.

Hope this clears it up for everyone!

Thanks revs, that's very illuminating. I didn't realise that the number transfer ended the old contract so all I need to do is request the PAC code and away I go.

will international iPhones be unlocked?

This is the big question for me. I do a lot of travel in Hong Kong, and would love to be able to use my HK SIM with my iPhone. Right now, it drives me crazy that I can't switch out the SIM on my iPhone and use my local HK number.

If I buy an iPhone in HK, will I still be able to use it with AT&T in the USA? Or will they simply refuse to give me a SIM?

-Vik

Increased pricing of the AT&T contract makes it difficult for more people to jump on. The difference is about $15 per month on data/SMS.

How can that be? Before WWDC 08, if I could find a first gen iPhone to buy it would have cost me at the very least $458.99 (first gen iPhone $399.00 plus AT&T voice/data plan $59.99)...

But after WWDC 08, if I still could find a second gen 3G iPhone to buy it would cost me at the very least $268.99 (second gen iPhone $199.00 plus AT&T voice data plan $69.99 (voice plan 450 min. 39.99 plus data plan 30.00).

Of course any activation fees, taxes etc. are not in my calculation.

But I got a price break of $190.00 and when that is whittled down by the $10.00 extra for the 3G data plan for the next 23 months (remember I included the iphone and first month data plan payment in my initial math) means that we are paying only $40.00 more or $1.67 a month more for 3G speed! (1.67 x 24 month contract = 40.08)

Data plan increases 10.00 month x 24 month contract = $240.00 + old 450 minute plan 39.99 plus old data 20.00 or 59.99 x 24 month contract = $1,439.76 + 199.00 iPhone = $1,878.76 for the iPhone and two year contract. Keep same formula above minus the increase $10.00 / month for the data plan or subtract the 240.00 from the $1,878.76 but add the $200.00 more for the old iPhone price of $399.00 and you come up with $1,838.76.

$1,878.76 - $1,838.76 = $40.00

$40.00 / 24 month contract = $1.67 /month extra for 3G speed.

Yep, no matter how I slice it and do the math. I still can't see this humongous price increase that some are talking about?

It's not that they just don't know anything. It's that they either misinformed or just arrogant.

I and friends/family have been told:
1) It probably won't be available July 11th (their site now says it will)
2) It will "probably" be the 3G model (no kidding!)
3) Nothing has been announced yet (!!! Re Vodafone, who announced weeks ago !!!)
4) "What announcement?" (!!! Re iPhone 3G, on the morning of the keynote !!!)

Given that his Steveness said ALL of the deals in the 22 countries were "signed and sealed", this is catastrophically poor customer service from Vodafone. Long live the duopoly!

How will i be treated as a current ATT customer, with no iphone right now?

Ill still get the 299$ price yea? What about lines?

Well... I really wanted to hop on board and dump my current provider after 5 long years with them... no complaints (Alltel... who was recently bought out by Verizon). But I think given the fact AT&T doesn't offer any employee discounts through their "premier" website on the iPhone plans doesn't make any sense. I can understand not getting a discount on the iPhone because of the agreement they have with Apple, but to not offer a discount on the service plans (not talking about data but just service) doesn't make much sense. It would end up costing me a considerable more amount going to AT&T when I can get discounts with a good phone through Verizon. I really, really wanted this phone, but cost-wise I just can't stomach it.

you guys keep the faith, I think I'll pass this time. I purchased my version 1.0 on launch day last year and found out I could have boogied in to the Apple store the next day to pick one up. I think that will be my plan this go around. It will be interesting to see how hard the 2.0 will be to unlock, and since the new iPhone software comes out at the same time and will be used on my 1.0 , I may have to get off my ass and list it on Craigslist pronto.

Question

So I have a different service, not AT&T and I will be canceling. I want to keep my number, so should I cancel before or after the 11th, or does it not matter at all?

I didn't feel like reading through all the posts to see if your question was answered.

Once you switch your number to AT&T that day by signing up for service and keeping your same number, your previous provider's contract will be canceled automatically and you will be billed the cancellation. After that just call your old provider and pay the fee. They'll try to tell you that if you decide to come back they'll waive the cancellation fee, and the activation fee, but just tell them you got an iPhone :)

Thanks for answering, and also Arn replied on the second page saying the same thing. ;)

My contract expired in November so the only fees I should be paying are the final month of my service. I really hope they don't try to "keep" me, it is so annoying. I just want to yell out "no, i don't want your service anymore, so shut up and cancel already!" But I refrain. :)

AT&T is awesome.

I love the freedom they provide you, especially in comparison to the European markets. Why would I want to make my decision complicated, prepaid? In home activation? So silly, just give me some square plans and I'm happy.

is anyone else disapointed to see that the SimTool comes in brushed aluminium? i was hoping to get one in iMac white to match the white iPhone
:D

So existing iphoners get a special VIP line so we can look sail past all the newbies?

God I hope so ;)

I think they pick the people with the best costumes to let in first. Try dressing as an iPhone. ;)

Or many it'll be like a club where you should tip the maître d' to get the best spot in line.

Great Job Apple

It seems as though ATTpple may have read the internet forums for the hard core users and felt the frustration with the in-store activation. Existing customers should be treated VIP. To all the new iPhone people, I definitely advise waiting until after July 11th to get your iPhone. If they do this at 6pm, then it is very unlikely they will process a large number of new activations through the line by store closing. Meanwhile all of us iPhone 1 users will be home and on our new iPhones by 7! Nice change of course ATTpple.

Will it be the same price in all countries?

The iPhone is significant cheaper in the states, than it is in Denmark. I'm going to New Mexico next christmas, so I might get one there, if it's cheaper. Otherwise, can you purchase it from Apple's website for US, even though you're from Denmark? I know I might have to pay for the shipping, but I think it's almost cheaper that way.

Thanks!

Hi

I don't know about Denmark but O2 in the UK are selling the iPhone for about the same price as At&t are in the states. Example the 8GB 3g iphone will be $199 usd on a 2 year contract in the US and £99 GBP on a 18 month contract in the UK.

As far as I know you can't buy the 3G iPhone without a contract and you will need to sign up to a contract in store. So if you go into Apple in the US they not just sell you the phone. You will need to enter a contract there and then and as you don't live in the states you will not pass the credit check. O2 are going to sell a pay as you go iphone so not on a contract but that will be locked to o2 and we don't know to much about it yet.

If you don't want to buy the iPhone on your local network you might be better to wait until unlocked 3G iPhones start going on sale on ebay.

Quick Facts Regarding iPhone release on July 11th

Some answers to questions I have heard in this thread....

The activation process will be done in store AT&T employees will process everything in our activation system and WILL have to connect the iPhone up to our computers to run a program that will "un-brick" the Phone afterwards customers will have to go home and sync up to iTunes to finish the process.

Even exsisting iPhone users wanting to upgrade to the new model will have to undergo the same process as new customers.

All in all most activations will take 5 to 10 minutes.

That whole process is to ensure that iPhones that are sold in the U.S stay with AT&T

If you are an AT&T customer already and want the new iPhone you must be "upgrade eligable" to get the $199 and $299 price, please visit your local store to find out if you are or not. Exsisting iPhone owners are eligable for the discounted price. Now here comes the tricky part, if you are not eligable for an upgrade you pay the "non-eligable pricing" which has yet to be determined from AT&T (but most guess $399 and $499).

As far as the launch is concerned they will probably close down the store at around 3pm and reopen an hour later, but no official word yet from our higher ups...

Hope that helps with a lot of peoples questions :p

so I wonder if I can give my current phone to my girlfriend? She has AT&T but is on a family plan

if i've got an at&t plan that's not under contract, what should i do exactly to get the iphone 3g? i share a family plan and would just like to keep my current service, just upgrading the phone and of course getting the data plan.

All indications are that the 3G iPhone plans will be eligible for corporate discounts as it's now the same as any other ATT plan as opposed to being a special iPhone plan.

Yeah? Well I really do hope so. I'm very tempted to move to Verizon because of the discounts over there, and many of my colleagues and friends have it. But... I'm may be in for the iPhone if they are now allowing the corp discounts...

I guess we'll have to wait and see, but I'm curious of what will happen in the resale market for 2G iPhones. Alot of people (or at least me) don't need EDGE because there isn't much coverage out in rural PA, and I already own a really nice Garmin GPS, so new iPhones don't sway me much. What I'd like to see is if prices dramatically drop, or stay similar to new phones until the 3G can be unlocked.
