Hey! Wish one of you guys would call the AT&T stores in the Houston area, I can't even get them to return my call...let alone give me any kind of information about the IPhone...LOL

I just got an email from my friend that also works for AT&T. He didn't say I couldn't post it and he will probably get fired because I did but here it is anyway. Sorry, I had to block out the names.

That is not very convincing...... at least to me anyways. The one the OP first posted I think is better "proof" even though these are all probably fakes anyways, as much as I would like this to be true.

I agree, I've worked for fortune 500 companies before & used corporate email, I have never recalled anyone using that kind of vulgar language and tone set by this email, I SAY FAKE.

Take the bickering somewhere else.

It is a phone, for heaven's sake.

shun the non-believer... shunnnnnnnn!!!

[charlie the unicorn]

but i suppose nobody is going to know when it is launched until they release it officially.

LOL, that's great. ;-)

Well, at least Dave get's it. :) I don't know how I could have made it anymore obvious for the rest of you.

hey guys, i just got an email from santa clause and the easter bunny, expect christmas to be in april next year, and easter in december. For whatever reason, they decided to switch dates.:D

so instead you have people out on the streets all night so the police get to babysit them. much better solution.

"Better" is a relative term.

It is better for the store because they are closed, no shoppers, traffic concerns. The way businesses look at it from a liability standpoint, they are not responsible for people outside when they are closed. They did not "create" the need to wait. Stores routinely open at 8AM, 9AM or whatever.

When a store is open but a desired item is not available until 6PM; and no one knows how many each store has (to eliminate or reduce the need to line up early), a good attorney could suggest that this is a forseen if not desired situation.

The store created the lines, put the people in the heat and are part of the cause for any heat (or line)-related incidents.

By transferring ownership of the care for the people in line (us) the business cleans most (not all) of the responsibility from their hands.

New signup policy = longer wait = 8am release time.

Its probably true. Im going to call AT&T now to see if they tell me... doubt it though.

Wrong.

New sign up policy = wrong info.

8 am instead of 6 pm = better than sending people home after business hours on a friday to find an activation mess going on where virtually NO ONE had a working iPhone within minutes as they were told they would.

I was called by my uncle earlier today, and he told me that the stores around me would not only be opening at 8am, but also activating the phones at that time. The reason why they are opening at 8am is to make sure they can activate all of the phones. The girl also told him that there was a line last year at the at&t store in mokena.

Yep, 8:00am PDT; I stopped-by the AT&T Corporate Store at the Mall and spoke with the SM and she said that the Mall doors will open at 8:00am and they will be selling and activating the 3G iPhones onsite for everyone purchasing the 3G iPhones. The Mall has authorized the AT&T Corporate Store to open it's doors at 8:00am and they anticipate the line to be the entire length of the Mall itself, and some. I'll be camping out because "I CAN!" LOL Let me know if you want me to save you a spot in line...:p

I'll say one thing, the OP's email seems very believable. Notice how they discuss the price per head to spend, an ideal breakfast/lunch, and even the point about vouchers vs expenses. If it was fake, the email would get straight to the point, throwing in some un-clever discussion. At the very least, the email was written by someone who works at AT&T. Still, I think its real.

Was talking to a sales assistant at The Carphone Warehouse in Telford yesterday who told me they'd be open at 7am on July 11th, provided the shopping centre would open its doors that early (it's in an enclosed mall).

Granted, one shouldn't assume that the phone goes on sale that early. They might just be opening to let you wait an hour before you can buy the phone..

He also suggested that they'd only accept card payments for the phone (on contract or payg) - I'd asked him if I could use vouchers to part-pay for a payg model, and he said it was unlikely as vouchers are treated as cash.

Combine that with the guy in Dallas who said he spoke with them and they said the same thing, Dave has a lot more cities to blanket and managers to bother.

If you'll notice, I never said that the original poster's email wasn't legitimate, never said anyone was lying, and never said that it wouldn't be 8AM.

What I said was:

- The original email IS NOT a memo to store managers from AT&T corporate. It is an internal email message at ONE STORE, and if it is a message to "management", is at MOST is an informal message from a regional manager.

- When I saw this, and saw other people saying AT&T stores "confirmed" it, I called all of the AT&T corporate locations in my area (Madison, WI). NONE confirmed it. In fact, all said they had no idea.

- Upon discovering this, I called other areas where people claimed to have "confirmed" it, and found NO ONE saying 8AM except one person who, upon further discussion, said it wasn't anything official, but was a rumor he had seen online.

- Based on this, I suggested the original email, since it is NOT a memo to all AT&T store managers but one email internal to a single store, might have been a misunderstanding at one store (about prep time vs on-sale time), especially since the original memo alleged to have gone to AT&T store managers has yet to be leaked, when previous AT&T iPhone 3G memos to store managers have been leaked in their entirety.

- Even calling around to all the stores listed in my Philly post, only ONE said 8AM explicitly.

- I would actually prefer the 8AM time. I just haven't been able to confirm it myself, and it became almost entertaining to me for people to say "confirmed in city X", and then for me to call AT&T stores in city X and receive no such confirmation at all. Note I wasn't asking "is it possible you might open early, theoretically", I was asking, "Do you know what time of day specifically the iPhone 3G will be going on sale on July 11". Because of the wide variety of answers, it also didn't seem plausible that people were instructed to not disclose this information, as the answers would be more similar and consistent.

- If it ends up launching at 8AM, great. If you go back and look at my posts, I never said it wouldn't, never called anyone a liar, and never said the OP's email was fake. I simply was relating what AT&T stores were — or in this case, were not — telling me.

yep, the ATT store in Dallas (Highland Village to be very exact) said, in person, store is opening up at 8am CST, 120 units, i should expect a line, they expect to sell out like last year on first day, they will be getting a second shipment on July 12th, demo units go up on July 11th...not before.

he seemed quite sincere and knowledgeable, so i, myself, believe him. i took that day off of work to camp out a bit, but i wasn't sure of which location. after talking to him and the store being very nice (if you know Highland Village, you'll know what i mean), i'll be at his store that morning....prob around 6am.

Great. As I have said several times, I would be happy with the 8AM time. It would make my July 11 a heck of a lot more pleasant.

I'll check with the AT&T stores in Madison, WI, again tomorrow, and if they now say 8AM, I'll be happy to come back here and say so.

(I know some people would probably expect me to come back here and say I was "wrong", but nowhere did I say it certainly wouldn't be 8AM. Just factually relating what AT&T stores were telling me in response to a direct, simple question.)

So that explains why they responded with a letter written in crayon when I emailed them a few days ago. :D
