I went to both the AT&T store and the Apple Store which are like 5 minutes away from my home, both gave me the same answer....

"Call us on July 6th, we'll have more information then."

So I plan to do as directed.

I just called the Evesham (Marlton) NJ AT&T store.
I spoke with Justin. He had no idea about the launch of the iPhone beyond July 11th. He said they may know more on the 10th.

Slight, light-hearted sarcasm detected in his voice, but he seemed sincere.

I live in Sacramento as well. Where exactly is here?

I called one of the stores closest to me (Folsom). didn't get the guy's name. He did mention that they were opening at 8am on 7/11, but didn't say they would be selling the iPhone at that time.

Last night I went to my next closest store (Citrus Heights), and talked to the lady that not only sold my wife the Razr she's using, but the guy that got us on ATT's uVerse service (Ana and Rick). Both said directly that they will be opening at 8am that day. This store closes at 8pm, so they would be open to accommodate the rush expected for that day.

Interesting that they will receive the information on a Sunday. Even more interesting that they will receive the information on the Sunday of the three day 4th of July weekend.

Please, keep us posted of what you hear.

over here in the uk i called my local O2 store. luckily i got the manager, who seemed as though he knew what he was talking about. Dailog below:
Me:Hi

Manager: how may i help you?

Me: I just wondered if you knew what time the iPhone 3G will launch?

Manager: Its definitely 7 AM, but it’s a bit up in the air.

Me: What Do You Mean?

Manager: Well, the centre usually opens at 10AM, so we are working with the managers to get it to open early for us. If not then it will be 10AM.

Me: SO it’s the same time nationwide. 7AM

Manager: Yes. Although some centre stores may be affected.
think its trustworthy?

I really hope they open up early because it may not matter to any of you but my job is Friday sat sunday 6pm to 6:30 AM and i have a very strict schedule

I agree...but i'm taking my last vacation day availible to me for my internship so i can get my iphone.

Has there been any word as to when we can actually pre-order one, whether we're existing customers or not?

Honestly ill wait on line again this year as I did last but seriously, if this is going to be an every year affair, its already getting played out. The rumors, the confirmations, the speculation, AND then Apple & AT&T cant even give us the courtesy of what time it will sell at. Last year they said 6pm definitely but I'm not sure about how long before the actual release they said it...

I called my local AT&T, yesterday...had to leave a message, and of course, no return call from them, which is what I expected. I didn't even mention the IPhone, either, still no luck! I did go online to the AT&T website and leave my email for IPhone updates, so maybe that is how I will find out the release time, etc.

My friend works for AT&T... the email has a lot of names in it and I don't want him losing his job.

doesn't matter if you show the names. if your friend sent a work email from work to you there is a trail. and pretty much every state allows an employer to read and track work provided email accounts.

so all ATT needs is to find out that that email got loose, start an investigation into who got it etc, and they can find the culprit and use the info to bust your friend.

I hope the apple store opens at 8 am, that would be more exciting because then I could get my iPhone quicker!

according to my local Apple store, no way. no preorders, no pre buying, no waitlists.

and they told me check the apple iphone page for info about the time on the 11th. because once it was settled it would be going up. if it is going to be different at each store there will be a way to find out for each one.

I suspect that they won't answer.

I asked my local store what their hours on the 6th would be cause I heard about this info release and was told that they are having their quarterly required meeting that night after closing and yes they would probably find out more info at that meeting. but the info would be posted on apple.com if it is anything that they can tell the public.

They will not be selling it at 6pm due to lengthened purchase times because of signing up in store.

Use logic people... Logic.

according to what I was told when I spoke to someone at apple, although they don't have all the details, the in store part of the process won't be full activation. they will start the process and then you finish it at home.

so it sounds like they will get just enough for ATT to be able to charge folks that $200 (or whatever the amount was) fee for not signing up/breaking contract and that's all. so really no more time then when you buy a computer and they get the info for the extended warranty.

and I"ll put down odds that buying an iphone will require a credit card so they can use those hand things they have and thus have like 10-20 'registers' going at a time. and iphones is likely all they will do for any evening period since no one will be insane enough to go computer shopping that night and they won't have their classes and such.

so they will have stacks of the phones out and you just walk up and say "8 gig black" and hand over and id and credit card and within 5 minutes you are out the door.

d--need for security all day
e--need to care for people in the potential heat and sun all day. If the lines are at night, no need to babysit while the store, mall, center is closed. Reduced liability. When the stores are open and people are in line the potential for heat related illness increases and so does the managment's liability.

so instead you have people out on the streets all night so the police get to babysit them. much better solution.

I think it is funny Dave won't believe the e-mail but I am supposed to believe him when claims to have, after-the-fact, talked to managers at 20 stores, which I find hard to believe.

We have no proof Dave actually did any of this or actually talked to real managers. So why should his word be given any creedence in his attempt to debunk this then the original mail. Especially in light of others haven talked to stores who confirmed it.

Wow. That's hilarious. So I suppose the only way you'll believe it is if I post recordings of the conversations?

I can't even believe what I'm reading here. This wasn't "after the fact". The very first thing I did was call all the stores in my area (Madison). Then, I called two other stores people claim "confirmed" it for them. They didn't. Then I called every store listed in Sacramento. You see what they told me. Then, the OP said that five stores in Philly "confirmed" 8AM. I called the ten stores AT&T's web site listed within "10 miles" of "Philadelphia, PA" as entered. Those are the names, and exactly what they said. In fact, you can call each store, and see that there is a person what that name at each store.

Anyone can do this. It's just hilarious that you'd believe someone saying "confirmed in Sacramento" over someone who actually posts the exact stores, names of persons spoken with at the stores, etc.

Also, if you have any reading comprehension (or intellectual honesty) whatsoever, I never said I doubted the email. In fact, I said — several times — that I'm sure the email itself is genuine. I never called anyone a liar. What I said was that it was a single email internal to a single store, NOT the memo store managers got from AT&T...so it could be a misunderstanding at one store. And given that one of the stores who told me "8AM" was just a guy who had seen the very same rumors we're discussing now — all of which probably started with this very thread, including Boy Genius Report's "tip", which they said they'd follow up on and have NOT been able to confirm themselves — I simply said it was more likely that it was a misunderstanding about staff prep time vs on-sale time at ONE store.

I NEVER said that the 8AM time was wrong for certain; I just said that I have not been able to get more than one store to claim the 8AM time was confirmed by calling them myself. That's a simple fact. Feel free to call the stores yourself and see what kind of answers you get. I'll bet you'll get the same responses (unless something has changed in the meantime, etc.).

So apparently, I'm called out in this. Oh well.. In for a very loud sheep.

And if you really want to get pedantic about it, it's obvious you didn't call every store in Sacramento, otherwise you would have included every in the Sacramento area, including Citrus Heights, Roseville, Folsom, Davis, or Elk Grove.

*yawn* But I digress. You must know more about the town I live in than I...

Ugh. Again, I never called anyone a liar. And since the only information you gave was "Sacramento", all I could do was enter "Sacramento" on AT&T's web site, and call the stores returned. I'll happily call those stores you listed now, and will report back what they say in a few moments. Never said I knew more about your town than you, nor about Sacramento's suburbs.

Matt: "We don't know yet." I asked when they might know. "They'll release information somewhere near the launch date probably."

John: "I don't have any definitive info yet...as of now, I think we might be selling it when we open at 9...we could open earlier." I asked how certain that was: "Well, we don't know anything yet for sure, and we'll probably know more as we get closer to July 11."

Any comments?

You're correct. I could care less what your schedule is and how strict it is.

Odd way to word it don't you think?

maybe they are doing it earlier in the day because activation will take much longer in-store

I just don't get why people have a problem with wanting/not wanting to believe this. There is "proof" to back up what the OP is saying. If you want to believe it than that is fine. If you do not want to believe it that is fine as well. You don't have to go around preaching to everyone how right/wrong you are though, because quite honestly it's annoying. Especially over such a stupid detail as the opening time, because it doesn't really matter that much when they open as I'm sure most of you who are planning on getting it will, and also because we will have definitive information in a few days. Just relax peeps.
