Woo i got one today. I got it at about 2pm and was apparently the second person to get a PAYG that day. And the software is 2.0.1 so don't know if that is a cause to say that iPhones aren't being sold very quickly there or what? Any setting it up now, looks and feels a lot better than my ipod touch :D
2.0.1 is 2 firmware versions behind the current version, but you probably know that. A more reliable way of telling how quickly they are selling may be to look at the build week of your handset. :)

My first post here, woo!

There were discussions happening on the O2 customer forum on whether you can use Simplicity SIM in the PAYG Iphone and, contrary to what some O2 staff have said, you can. See: http://customerforum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=7693&start=15

I'm trying to work out whether you can buy a PAYG iphone, topup the min. credit, activate it in Itunes, logon to The Cloud/BT OpenZone and activate the Wifi (using the PAYG phone number given), then once the Wifi is tied to the device (by the fixed MAC address of the device), then put a simplicity sim card in and continue using the free Wifi. To me this sounds possible due to the Wifi being linked to the device instead of the sim card.

Is this possible?

I imagine it would be because, as you said, the wifi is tied to the MAC Address of the device rather than the SIM or the Phone Number, of course you wouldn't get the rest of the "free data" offered, but free wifi would be a cool start.

Well I took the plunge and bought one first thing this morning. Both O2 stores in my town and the first CPW store I went into were all sold out, but the second CPW store had them in stock so I bought one. All in all a very quick transaction, but as other people have said, you have to put a minimum £10 top-up on there.

They also did an "identity check" which involved them taking £1 from my debit card FIRST for some reason, before processing the purchase transaction - silly as I was paying with the same card!

I've also managed to get one this morning, a white 16Gb one. No issues with the transaction, had to take the £10 top up of course. Activated at home without issues. It was a 2.0.1 release so I've just updated and am now awaiting the sync.

Interesting you say some stores have run out, CPW online store seems to have allot of stock, just ordered a nice white one :D - They have amazing delivery also, next day.

Well, I just picked up mine too - 8gb should be enough. :)

Really straightforward process. Quick £1 debit then credit to your card, pay for the phone and you're done.

Has anyone actually tried this yet? It would make the £10 compulsory top-up worth it for those of us that want to use the phone on a contract SIM.

Could you make few things clear for me here. I'm thinking of buying an iPhone (with friend's help) from O2 with the Pay n Go, because it's not yet avaible in my country. So my friend would just buy it for 410 pounds and that's it? No more monthly payings, no nothing? I understand, that it would be locked to O2, but there's a TurboSims etc. Thanks for the help.

yep, that's right.
Got mine for £409.99 from O2 store yesterday.

Has anyone managed to transfer their contract to the iPhone, it says on th O2 website that there will be a fee for this. Just wondering about the details.

I currently have a Blackberry with O2 which is great for email but c**p for internet, I can sell it on eBay for £100 and was planning on buying a Touch soon, so the iPhone should only cost me £100 more.

I am wondering how much it would cost me to merge to the iPhone tariff though (as I won't be keeping my Blackberry one, with £10 a month for the BB data).

This works out well for me - O2 want me to pay a 150 pound deposit, since I don't pass the credit check (I'm fairly new to the UK) and I want the 16GB on the lowest tariff possible since I don't use my phone all that much. So, it makes sense for me to pay for it on prepaid and just do the minimum top-up each month. It works out quite well for anyone in my situation really!

Also, does anyone find that the staff in Carphone Warehouse REALLY pushy? I never said I was going to get one, just inquiring, and the guy told another staff member to go grab one from stock for me! Do they work on commission?

went to CPW in Oxford Street on Saturday - not only did they take the payment for the phone I picked up, they said they had so much fraud in the store they would have to ring up and verify my card etc. and take the £1.00 from another card to verify identity. When I got home my credit card company rang to ask if I spent £820 in CPW today - they had taken the payment twice - now I call that fraud. Now I am having a fight to get the duplicate payment back. CPW Oxford Street never answer the phone. Customer Services were no help. Had to go to a CPW locally to get through direct to customer services - be very careful...... Last time I ever shop in CPW.

Oh dear, that's bad luck. If you don't have any joy with CPW then you could always contact your card company and get them to chargeback the duplicate transaction. But they normally say that you have to at least try and resolve your dispute with the company first.

I think it is now resolved. They are sending back the duplicate payment, and I have to say that customer services are sending me a cheque for £10.00 to cover my phone calls and petrol, parking charges etc.

Does anyone know if we can use this iphone 3g payg sim card to go onto simplicity and will we still get the free web browsing for 12 months as promised which will enable me to get the £15 simplicity with free web browsing. I dont see there being much of a problem because it makes complete sense...im going to have to call and check.

How long does the £10 credit take to turn up on your phone when you purchase from the CPW website. Mine still hasn't appeared yet after receiving the phone yesterday and I need that to appear before my 12 months free wi-fi then becomes active. THEN I can swap it for my Simplicity sim so I'm currently stuck waiting for this top up to become active :(

Mine had registered within a few minutes of activating via iTunes.

as above - i'd have thought it should be pretty instant - perhaps a call to customer services to sort it out.

do please let us know how you get on with the switch to your simplicity tariff and the wi-fi stuf.

Sounds like a call then - it says on the CPW site it takes up to 2 days so I'll have to ring them tomorrow

EDIT: Actually, my email receipt says online credit bought at the same time as a phone will top up on the 8th day after purchase?!?

EDIT 2: Phoned up CPW after finding their call centre is open Sundays. The guy spoke to the PAYG team and they say the top up does take 8 days for it to be activated via website purchases. He agreed with me its a rather silly but nothing he could do about it. So I have had to top up £10 myself to kick the process into life :(

and thats the reason why it takes 8 days for it to go on, so it forces you to top up ANOTHER £10 so you can use the nice shiny new phone that u have received.

Worked perfectly with the new Simplicity sim - I registered my iPhone with the PAYG sim in it at a Cloud hotspot and then a BT openzone hotspot. Went back home, swapped the sim card and then I tested it yesterday and was able to browse perfectly at the hotspots :)
