I spoke to O2 employee yesterday (Sunday) and he said he hasn't heard anything official about the sale of the Pay & Go iPhone. He knows what it says on the O2 site but nothing has been confirmed with his store yet.

Not very reassuring.

Has anybody else heard anything better?

What's to understand!

It's a 3G iphone, which have been out for months...

with a PAYG sim card in, which have been around for donkeys years.

Surely they can't cock this up... can they!!!

If you put a normal pay and go sim in the phone, 3G won't work as it isn't the new 3g sims.

Went to o2 store today. Confirmed that they'll have pay as you go iphones tomorrow. Though they were reluctant to tell me this at first (Didnt even mention pay as you go when I asked about iphone tariffs.)

I heard rumours that it might be sold unlocked?

Just being reading the o2 website again and I came across this " Your 12 months unlimited web and Wi-Fi will be available within 24 hours of your first top-up or upgrade registration."

What does upgrade registration actually mean ?

I know that, but's it's still just a sim card enabled for 3g PAYG isn't it. When I got PAYG for my 2G I didn't get a new sim card they just enabled my old PAYG sim card for use in an iphone.

If I'm missing something and this isn't the case then sorry for bringing it up but i still don't see why this launch should pose the same problems as the contract 3G.

Hopefully not but you never know!

Should I risk going and be late for work only to be faced with a blank faced sales rep? Mind you I think that's part of their training!

It's a shame that apple (may not) be selling the PAYG iPhone. I really didn't want to have to deal with O2 or the Carphone Warehouse simply because of any possible issues that I may have with the phone in the future, and having to deal with those sales assistant who don't really know the product very well...:(

I'm still going to go in the apple store tomorrow just to make sure...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

it doesnt matter where you buy the phone. If there's smoething wrong with it you can take it to any apple store. I bought mine at o2 and had it replaced at the apple store.

Did anyone manage to pick one up? I decided to leave it until Saturday and keep my fingers crossed that they have one in stock.

I just popped into town to get one, why did I bother trying! The O2 store said they hadn't received any and not only didn't know when but seemed completely uninterested in bothering to serve me or look it up. I had tried calling them before I went in person but the phone rang off the hook. It wasn't because they were busy, they two idiots were sat together sipping coffee when I trolled up.

So I walked across the mall to the Carphone Wharehouse where two similarly uninterested twerps lectured me on how it should be dearer, hummed and harred, discussed if it was a different stock code or not from contract and then when I asked again if they had any they said no!

No stock I can accept but the attitude of the staff has enraged me. Aaaarrrrrggh!

I'm so pi**ed off now I'm not sure I can be bothered to try again.

A nice lady sold me a white 16GB iPhone 3g this morning at the Leamington Spa O2 store. She fiddled about with the SIM card from a special iPhone PAYG envelope for a bit then scanned the sealed iPhone and top up in.

£399.99 + £10 top up, all good.

wtf! They saying you have to top up by £10 instore. NO there's nothing to that nature on the website!!!

I don't think you have to top-up £10. However, in order to use the phone as a phone you need to top-up and the minimum top-up is £10. The sales people like to be ambiguous about this, and make you feel silly not topping up.

Carphone Warehouse has them online now: http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-server-PageServer?article=MAIN.UK.INTERNET.STATIC.APPLE.APPLEIPHONE&NODE_ID=11547

Shad0w59 - congrats on your successful purchase ! Any news/views on stock levels of the White version in L'Spa ?

Thanks

My father was about to buy one until he realised that he would have to buy from either O2 or CPWH.. having phoned various Apple stores yesterday and all saying they would not be selling the PAYG today. It seems he would rather do without than buy an Apple product from anyone other than Apple ..

It'll be interesting to see how long this actually goes on.. because surely demand is relatively low now, and PAYG would be easy for Apple stores to introduce.

Just walked into my local O2 Store (Worcester) walked up to the iPhones and was advised about PAYG immediately. Black or White ones available. In fact they had sold 5 by 11.30.

£10 First Top Up was Required.

I asked yesterday if they had white in and a guy said there was only 1 white one left.

Carphone Warehouse up the road said they only had 8GB yesterday but were getting a delivery of iPhones that day.

Don't know about today, when I bought mine she didn't say anything about it being the last one. I think the earlier comment was a bit of a ploy as he didn't check or anything.

Yes. The Carphone Warehouse website when you go to checkout lists two £10 airtime vouchers - one free and one that you have to pay for and a "leaflet" - none can be removed from the cart.
