The features of the Instinct smash the iPhone's hands down, but I too worry about the speed of the OS, not the web however, since EVDO is faster than AT&T's 3G from what I have seen

From reviews I've read, I've heard web browsing on the Instinct is not only incredibly clunky, but is actually built so poorly, it's slower than the EDGE iPhone.

Only time will tell.

I'm sorry, but I've read this post like 10X, and I have no idea what your point was. Do you have the "iPhonie" or the "InSTANK" or not? (Your words:If I had an Instinct and stayed with Sprint I would get one, and laugh it up to any iPhone/AT&T user, but I know they would just show me their UI and shut me up.) Really confused...Sorry, but if you would like feedback or dialogue within this forum, I'll need some clarification.

Maybe so, but not this one or this one. They say that there are issues with certain webpages, but the browser is just as zippy as the other Sprint phones using EVDO which did beat the EDGE iPhone and other EDGE devices.

But the big thing I am reading is the UI is terrible for the browser. And as a Mac user, UI is very important to me.

Basically, I either stay with Sprint and pick up the Instinct with it's features set, or go with AT&T and pick up the iPhone with it's UI and syncing. You aren't the sole source for dialogue or feedback within the forum though. Not trying to be nasty, but you worded that like you were the only one that will be responding.

I played with both of them at the mall the other day. The instinct seemed like a decent phone, touchscreen very responsive, decent UI, and nice features.

Then I went to the att store to check out iPhone. Way better experience imo. An even better touchscreen , web browsing much better, awesome UI, pictures/videos,songs loaded up like 10 times faster. Seemed more like a pocket computer with phone built in to me vs "cell phone with extra features".

Just about the only con I have with iPhone is the ATT network in my area....edge only. I talked to an ATT worker and said 3g will be avail in my area "sometime next year". So the thought of paying for 3g and not having it kinda turns me off. So it's a choice between a decent phone with superior 3g network or a superior phone with so so edge network....but still paying 3g prices. Hmmm......

Yeah. I wish that AT&T would just make 3G the default like Sprint and Verizon, and not fleece us for the service.

The main reason why I would leave Sprint and the service features that they have but AT&T doesn't is for the reception. AT&T has a much better network in terms of coverage in my area.

The Instinct looks nice, but I haven't come across anything that mentions what the screen is made of. Is it glass like the iPhone?

you're not paying for 3g, you're paying the same smartphone data price that blackberry's and other smartphone users have been paying for a long time now.

A coworker of mine just got an Instinct and I played with it for about 5 minutes. For some context, I'm currently with Sprint and have a PPC-6700 and I'm seriously considering moving over to an iPhone, but honestly the price of the monthly charges is giving me pause.

From a functional standpiont, it's probably equal to the iPhone, if not with more additions. You can go online and see those. It's thin, it's light. It has some tactile feedback when you press buttons or scroll. Things are fairly well laid out.

It's not as elegant as the iPhone. Things move around in a weird way. The screen doesn't seem as bright. The web browser forces you to go landscape, even if you might not want to. It just doesn't seem to work as well as the iPhone does. Maybe as I played with it more, I might get used to it. Heck, I got used to Windows Mobile 5, but I think the iPhone from an overall experience standpoint is far and away the better choice. I just wish they'd lower the monthly cost or get a SERO plan like Sprint has.

Either way you are going to pay more for the same thing that other carriers just give you. There is no distinction between smartphone/regular phone plans with Sprint, you just get service on 3G.

I am there with you Wildog27, the price is what is going to make me loose sleep at night.

Yeah i agree too.But im thinking everything together as far as monthly bill, insurance and sprint service being a little better in (MY) area.Iphone is the best but i cant ignore the other factors.Im going to wait for the 3g before i make up my mind.Maybe it will at least get me better reception.Or maybe they will start letting people insure the phone. We will see

He's wrong on a few things, which is why I usually go to CNET or somewhere else to just get the phone facts, then compare and judge for myself.

EVDO isn't theoretically faster, it is.

And the New York Times page always loads to Mobile as default on mobile browsers, it's not that either phone can't do it. That was mentioned in almost every review I have read so far. The iPhone doesn't have that problem since it's running a practically full version of Safari.

As his review states though, the basic differences will be the UI, and that's pretty much the biggest thing going for it for many people.

He is a bit biased (says that he is) since he doesn't mention service provider prices and features, he constantly mentions fixes for the iPhone that aren't out yet even for the 3G, and he doesn't concentrate on features that many would love to have (like GPS which is killer on the Vu and Instinct), while sticking to the features that the iPhone soars in.

He said it himself, when it comes to being a phone, the iPhone lags behind by a lot. But when it comes to being an iPod/computer like phone, the other just suck.

I do agree with him, but as many Mac users have proven, myself included, we tend to forgo standard/feature-full hardware and take cuts and sacrifices to get that sweet Apple UI.

Does not support mac whatsoever...

The deal breaker for me is going to be how it syncs with machines and my music. I have a .Mac/Mobile Me account and enough music to want the phone to play nice with it, so those may seal the deal for me. But Sprint's unmatched insurance and service plan price; along with Instinct's feature set still makes it a hard choice for myself.

Only time will tell.

Well from my experience (i've had the phone for a day), it does not play with the mac at all. The USB cable does not work and the only option is to send files via bluetooth. I've been trawling tons of sites and forums only to find that no one has a workaround. I sent an email to Samsung tech support about the lack of drivers and here was the response I received:

"Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately there is no support for the use of this model phone with a Macintosh computer. Any software or drivers available are compatible with a PC only. We have no drivers available to support the use of the phone as a modem for your laptop or PC. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause."

And forget about the push email option: you need to install software that is available only for windows 2000 (really, now) and XP. So I can probably guarantee that any .mac/mobileme services will also be unsupported.

I just don't understand that if sprint is poising this as an iphone competitor, why they have completely alienated mac users. I guess they think that all mac users will be getting the iphone... :sigh:

I am supposed to upgrade from 1st gen iphone to the 3g iphone. But i am now cosidering the instinct due to the materials that the new iphone is made of.Also because of the data plan going up.I currently have the $99 unlimited talk + the extra for data and texting. My bill is over $120 a month now. After the 3g release its going to be higher than that. And about the plastic material of the 3g iphone yeah i know most phones are plastic but you can also insure most of those other plastic phones like the instinct. Also my bill would be $100 for everything with the instinct.Any reasons why i should go with 3g iphone.

Stick with your current iPhone.

Cheaper monthly bill(unlimited evrything $100),insurance,cheaper phone it got to make you think a little bit.

Anyone even remotely contemplating the iPhone and then jumping to another 'wannabe' is going to be utterly gutted EACH AND EVERY day when they read that another new and awesome iPhone app just got released and they are just simply totally locked out of that pleasure...

You know the app store is coming - you know it's going to deliver awesome software...what's to think about ?

All the other phone co's are just trying to get people stuck on any tiny differentiator...they are desperately trying to distract everyone from the BIG fact that the iPhone is a computer running OSX that also happens to be a phone....

Buy another at your peril, I say...

Instinct =Sprint. That's enough for me to stay away.

This thread was going on fairly well without the fanboy comments. Seriously.

And Sprint is a far better network than AT&T is, even while it's "going out of business" or loosing money. Anyone that thinks the 3G plan for the iPhone on AT&T's network is bargain is living in a cave.

Stop the vaporware, since the possibility of new apps that fill gaps aren't proof of actual apps.

Stop making the lame claim that the iPhone is a tiny computer running OSX, we f***ing know that already.

Stop assuming that since it's not an iPhone it will suck, that's your own opinion so stop defending it with vaporware. You're not making a good point.

And stop bashing every other phone because it's not an iPhone when you have NOTHING to back it up besides opinion.

As for the phone not working with the Mac, that was a given. Nothing in terms of cell phones work well with Macs out of the box. Palm OS comes close, but that's another story. The main reason most Mac/Mobile Me users would consider an iPhone is because it plays nice with OS X. That group includes myself.

The sad part comes when you realize that you will end up paying more for only that compatibility and loosing out on features and services that other companies give you for cheap, like insurance.

Cheaper monthly bill(unlimited evrything $100),insurance,cheaper phone it got to make you think a little bit.

Unfortunately my friend, it doesn't. And soon there will be posts about why insurance isn't needed or as good as you and I say it is. Then there will be posts about how every other cell company sucks compared to AT&T even though their 3G coverage is much smaller.

Yeah insurance is a big deal to me because i have lost phones and had phones stolen and even broken phones with other companies.I didnt have to pay for a new phone it was free through insurance.Anybody that doesnt see that as a good thing must have money to waist.

Pardon me, I realise you may, to quote you, 'f***ing know all this already' but some people asked for advice - and yeah they got a fanboi response with some passion - so what!. That doesn't mean you can lay down the law on what can and can't be said O' Mighty Skunk.

Anyone else your planning to slap down tonight or just me ?
