Wii was also impossible (at least in some parts of the nation, just like the iPhone is) to find less than a week after it came out also. What's your point?

There were also lines at NintendoWorld for the weeks after the Wii's release, similar to what is happening now.

It's only a matter of days before the other states run out, then it will be the lines that stable off, not the stock. Simply because everyone will realize it will be futile to wait in line for a inventory-controlled product, just like the Wii.

Mark my words. Inventory will not stable off anytime soon. It's called basic economics people.

best then to order at an ATT store I guess. Unless there's a HUGE shipment pending (doubtful)

at least at the ATT store you can order one.

Still cant get one at any of the ATT stores near me. I give up.

You should order one from ATT. They say that you will get it in 3-5 business days.

Ah man. I got the last iPhone 16GB at my local at&t store on the 11th. I'm sure the guys that wanted one behind me were pissed as hell as they all wanted a 16GB too. I'm a new iPhone owner (but long time Mac owner) and I can say that this device has made my year.

I ordered mine on friday afternoon and I just picked mine up.. Had a little problem at the store activating but after about 20 minutes ( i was a little nervous they were going to say sorry this phone doesn't work. ) i got the phone... i saw at one apple store they are still having a pretty decent long line and then two other stores in the bay area are completely sold out. I think the easiest way of guaranteeing an iPhone is to order through the store, though they can only guarantee the set time frame if there is stock in the warehouse. blech.. hopefully the lines don't last toooo long! Good luck to those who haven't gotten theirs.

My AT&T store let me order one-

We told them what I wanted and paid for it upfront. They said it should arrive in "7 to 10 business days."

I hope that the "shortage" does not have an effect on the arrival date. The sales associate did say that they are filling all of the orders that they are taking before they begin to replenish their stock.

I stopped at the AT&T store by my office today and got the same story. I will go back tomorrow with a co-worker and order a 16GB white. I stopped on Sunday at an AT&T store near my house and they were very busy, but completely out of iPhones. The sales guy did not indicate the they could order one. It also appeared that they sold out on launch day and have not gotten any back in stock since. The store near where I work stated that they had 60 on launch day and have not had any since.

I am so tired of mundane iphone stories on the front page. I love ya macrumors, but please put these stories where they belong, on the 2nd page or dedicated iphone page.
I second that. iPhone = Apple, iPhone ≠ Mac.
If the iPhone were just a phone, I would agree.

However, the iPhone is running a version of Mac OS X, the same Mac OS X that runs on your MP, iMac, Mini, MB and MBP.

These are exciting times. :)

The iPhone roll-out has been nothing short of a clusterf***. I have tried four times to buy a phone and been unsuccessful: On Friday, at a local AT&T store, they ran out of inventory just a few people ahead of me; on Sunday, at the local Apple store, my sale was terminated because I have an AT&T account with a discount on it (I was told I would need to buy directly from the store). On two subsequent visits to different AT&T locations, I have been told they are sold out and hope to replenish pre-orders in 10-15 days.

I am a long-time Mac user (and defender!), but this experience is leaving me with a very bad taste in my mouth. Too little inventory and too little customer service ... a bad combination for business.

Why you blaming at&t and apple. If you really wanted the iphone, you should've stood in line earlier than 8am. Don't be blaming anybody else for your own clusterf**k. Be a man.

Well, Japan pretty much sold out on Friday (not just here and ther, as in some cases mentioned above, but nationwide). I don't know why Apple were not more 'forthcoming' in supply outside the USA. They could have sold way more than 1 million iPhones in the first 2 days if stock was better distributed.

Did Apple underestimate the demand that would be driven in Japan (and other non-USA markets) or was the 1 month lead-up from the WWDC to launch not enough time to get adequate stock levels in place?

And Softbank here in Japan have no idea when stock will be available - it is a rather unpleasant waiting game for many. And Softbank won't take orders. You just have to take your chances and wait in line once stock arrives.

Also, Apple are not selling through the Apple Stores, only at Softbank stores or electronic shops that have Softbank counters, so there are quite a few places that sell the iPhone, but none have any stock!

I still think its pretty stupid to stand in a 2 hour-plus long line for the iPhone. Just wait a week and you'll be fine! That said, i had no problem getting one...just walked into the apple store here in Chicago an hour before closing on Sunday, waited in a 5 minute line, then the nice lady had me on my way in about 15 minutes. Pretty painless!

The local ATT store wouldn't take an order

they never offered one and when I asked if I could order one they said no. I said when are you getting them in, they said "we have no idea".

Seems crazy. Maybe I'll try another ATT store.

What has made this launch have a dark side is the lines caused by activation. Last year I bought an iPhone the day after launch day with no wait. They of course had plenty of stock as well.

What I would have done:
Launch v2 software for original iPhone's on Thursday - gives the servers a good test run and avoids day 1 3G sales
No in-store activation for existing AT&T customers - overseas they got to just pop them SIM card in, are we that ignorant here?

Those two things alone would have helped with lines and kept sales going faster.

The current situation did have one success: Apple can point to AT&T and say how troublesome the in-store activation is. Now if we could just say how troublesome activation is all around and remove it.

What continues to puzzle me is why there are still lines this far after the launch and where are these people coming from during the day? I mean seriously does no one work anymore? ;) Which leads to another question: how are these being sold on ebay? Are people actually signing up for a 2 year contract just so they can resell an iphone? Of course its a free market and the person buying it from an ebay reseller is just as much to blame as the ebay reseller for perpetuating the situation, but that's some baaaad karma man.

One step away from the super evil of buying scarce toys with resell intent instead of leaving them for kids around xmas time.

It's July, kids on vacation, & families on vacation. When your loved ones start getting on your nerves, the peace and quite of standing in line is heaven.

I see what your saying, but I feel like this is different than last year. A week from now, the inventory will not be that much better. It's harder to supply the whole world, than just the US. We will see I get...

PS I direct ordered mine today..White 16gb..I cannot wait like everyone else it seems.

Yeah you should call around and try other AT&T stores. I was chatting a bit with the guy processing my order at my local AT&T store and he was complaining about how AT&T HQ keeps changing the iPhone policies like twice a day so even the people at the stores aren't always aware of what the current policy is for placing iPhone orders, etc. FWIW, they let me order an iPhone 3G 16GB without even opening an AT&T account today (I'm not currently an AT&T subscriber) at the subsidized price. They're going to call & email me when it is ready to be picked up. At that point, I go in and sign up for the cell service. Sucks that it might be a week or more before the phone gets here, but as I said before I much prefer to just order it and get it a bit later than deal with daily line waiting and never-ending telephone calls to see who does or doesn't have stock.

Macrumors front page is NOT just about anything that happens regarding Apple, just take a look at the page 2 stories right now to see.
Oh, I didn't realise that it was *your* site, and you got to say what the front page is and is not about.

Oh, right..... it *isn't* your site. *Arn* gets to say what the front page is and is not about. Don't like it? Go start your own site and run it as you please.

The iPhone is the biggest thing that Apple has ever done. When some new game-changing 'Mac' product sells 1 million units in 3 days, it can hog the front page. Right now, the iPhone is THE Apple product. It's bigger than the OS, the iMac, the notebooks, etc. It does what the Mac product line has been unable to do since nineteen eighty effing four: make all sorts of people want to stand in line for hours to come into an Apple-owned retail store to hand over cash for a product that they really, really want. By that measure, the iPhone is THE winner, the iPod is second, and every other computing product they make & sell is about as far from being a winner as possible.

Seriously, when a non-mac-fan comes into an Apple store, you have to *convince* them to buy a Mac. An equivalent expenditure on an iPhone requires having security guards to keep the mobs out who are dying to throw cash at Apple for the product. That's the difference. (At $2400 over 2 years for an iPhone, price-wise to a financed iMac it is a fair comparison.)

The iPhone IS Apple. Get over it.

I went to a store today because the online thing was wrong yesterday, some stores were red, but had them yesterday morning.

So I went today and waited for 3 hours, no shipment came in.

I don't mind the wait, if I know its going to be there. I do have a problem with not even employees knowing when they are going to get some in. If the guy said we will have more in at 3pm, here is the line, stay if you want, I may have.

Just horrible sharing of information. Granted, no one told me to wait for one or promised me one, I would just like to know the answer. Either we will have some or we won't have any.

I was in that Chicago line at 9:30 this morning. It took about 3 hours to get my phone(s.) It actually went pretty fast. The Michigan Ave Chicago store said they have "plenty of all models" in stock.
