I get that even today for my original iPhone

Even those who aren't very tech savy know about the iPhone and its coolness factor

Father of mine is just starting to get into computers and was amazed at the iPhone. He is used to his old, rinky Verizon phone

Haha, my dad was using a 2+ year old RAZR and he'd always be like "JESUS! Why are you always playing on your phone?!" and now that I gave him my old iPhone he won't get off it. Haha, it's a great day when your parents finally embrace technology for their own use.

Anyone's data/talk usage this high already? Haven't downloaded any apps over 3G, Just visited maybe 20 websites at the most and MobileMe Push syncing. Was this just info that was backed up from my old iphone??

Yes, this is from your backup.

I went to an Apple store yesterday to try and buy an iPhone. I figured since it was late, about 7:30 pm there would be no line, and I was hoping to get right in. I was very wrong. When I got there there were about 250 people in front of me, and the line wasn't moving. Since I am out of town for work, I figured I had nothing better to do, and thought the line might only take a couple of hours. By midnight I knew that I wasn't going to get a phone, but I had already spent so much time waiting in line, I really didn't want to leave. The employees were great, and vowed to stay until everyone had a phone, but I really wasn't about to wait until 6:00 am. The security guards at the mall told them that they were kicking everyone out at 3:00 am so I decided to wait with the hope of getting in before then. Had I known that I would be waiting that long, I would never have stood in line. At about 1:00 am an employee came out and said that the At&t reps at the call centers were being sent home at 2:00 am eastern time. (In retrospect, that doesn't make much sense because when I finally got my phone today I didn't have to talk to anyone at At&t.) So they started giving out claim tickets and telling everyone to come back the next day, and they would be allowed to come straight in without waiting in line. I went home a little disappointed, but not much I could do about it.

Because of work I couldn't get back until 11:30 this morning. I was taken right into the store, (there were about 300 people in line) and handed my 16 gb black iPhone. The entire process was pretty seemless, and I was in and out within 10 minutes. I was not eligible for an ungrade, so I was anticipating having to pay 499$. When the sales guy rung me up the total was 430$, I was of course surprised and so I asked the rep why it was about $100 less than it should have been. He said that some people were being given a $100 discount. It didn't make sense but I wasn't about to complain.
I walked back to my hotel very excited. When I got back I plugged in and loaded all the applications I had downloaded yesterday. When I was done I noticed that there was only 6.5 gb left. That didn't sound right, so I started looking, and turns out I had purchased a 8gb iPhone. The sticker on the top of the box said 16gb but the smaller sticker on the bottom said 8gb, and the back of the iPhone said 8gb. I wasn't very happy, but the $100 difference in price suddenly made sense. I put everything back in the box and walked back to the mall. When I walked back into the store the sales rep I had dealt with was surprised and shocked at what had happened. He called a manager over who was suspicious at first, but after he checked the receipt, box and serial number he was amazed. It took about 45 minutes to get everything straightened out. Once they finally got everything figured out they told me they were giving me a $150 store credit with no stipulations for the trouble!

Although the whole thing was a mess, I was very impressed at how they handled it. They could have just said "sucks to be you" but they were very accommodating. It's no wonder they have so many loyal customers. Not too many other stores would have done anything like that.

My god, I can't believe people are happy to wait in line for a piece of electronics for HOURS! wow, crazy. Wait one week, and you can just walk in the door and get one...

Seriously, scary that people are willing to do this for a simple toy/device/whatever :)

Yes, but unlike ATT, Verizon has a billion times better signal and coverage than ATT. In the North East, every iPhone user I have spoken with has said the same thing -- phone is great, coverage is absolutely terrible (especially compared to Verizon). As sexy as the iPhone is, the lousy ATT service is such an ugly thing with which to have paired the phone.

Remember, it is a phone

I'm surprised you could read those posts from your high horse.

(I'm like a super hero who points out annoying qualities of other people. wait... crap!)

i think the OPs point was if you aren't getting a lot of emails on the phone anyway, why bother with push.

on my phone I use my mac.com email which is only used by my job and perhaps 3 of my closest friends. plus my parents for major emergencies. so I get perhaps 5 emails during the day. it's not a hassle for me to manually check my email on breaks.

if I was getting 10 times that every day I might find push really useful.

I use my phone every day for work purposes and emails are extremely important to receive.

With that said, even I do not think push is that big a deal. If I need the email, I can use the Wifi or Edge found around where I am at and everything is fine.

My review

Alright, I created an account just to give my honest to goodness review of this new iPhone, so, 1. let's hope they approve me. I'm mainly doing this for myself because I have 13 days to decide if I wanna keep it.

PROS:

much better feel. The curved back is a joy to hold on to compared to iPhone.

GPS is very fast, accurate, and overall great.

App store, gets about half a plus, because in my mind the phone should still be open. Half the apps in the app store were available for free as long as you used installer app. A lot of the apps are way overpriced (1.99 for a flashlight app, come on). I'll be jailbreaking it when it's easy enough to do so, and hopefully it'll continue to host the groundbreaking apps I've become accustom to (iphone video recorder).

Audio quality (speaker/headphones) is much better.

Call audio quality is slightly better.

disregarding all the breakthroughs of the first iPhone, that's about all I can mention as far as pluses. I'm skipping over the software because that's the same regardless, and it's great.

CONS:

Battery life. I hope I got a bum unit because, I feel like I can watch the bar go down while surfing or playing a game. Esp. if I'm somewhere with less than stellar reception, speaking of reception...

Reception, in my experience, seems to be bad when 3G is turned on, but fine when it's off. Almost like I get my normal edge connection perfectly fine, but my 3G is 1 bar so when I make calls it doesn't switch to edge. Perhaps AT&T hasn't built enough of it by me yet, but I live almost right in downtown Chicago.

Plastic Back, I don't like it really.. I liked the aluminum.

Screen, I don't personally like the warmer color temperature of the screen, and to be honest, I can't tell it's sharper. I do notice that the new screen is brighter, and it's lowest brightness setting is brighter than the lowest setting is for the old iPhone, and I have to warn that I did/do use my iPhone before going to sleep at night and frequently manually dimmed it all the way for eye comfort. Also, remember the battery life. Also now in bright light i notice "the sparkleys" more. not a big issue because it is so much brighter, but just noticed em more than usual.

AT&T, screw AT&T... apple builds an amazing keyboard, and THEY take advantage with outrageous text rates. where's the 10$ plan AT&T??!!! and 18$ upgrade fee... excuse me.. my info is already in the system... don't be lame. No way of keeping your voicemail.. I've confirmed that the iPhone is the only phone not able to transfer voicemails between phones... I suppose because of visual voicemail, but I mean, I know how this works.. it's just a folder with some files in it.. Why can't you make it happen. I'm almost ready to pay the 200$ termination fee, just to not give them any moneys because they just don't realize that giving a good deal brings more people.

OVERALL:
who knows, it's got some issues, and it's a little better.. I really don't feel that the improvement in speed is worth the cash+battery.. I am actually considering buying back an 8gig 1st gen. it was good enough for me I think.

I would have liked to see some major things, mms messaging!!!!, front facing camera, tactile shutter button, landscape texting,.. come on apple.. these are the simple things you usually get right, or eventually (flush headphone jack)..

Meh, the whole thing has left me up in the air.

Mine is now working great, apparently there was some issue where they were not activating the SIM chip or something for the first 1/2 hour or so at the store I went to. Thanks whoever told me to be patient :)

Only a line here to note the activation problems many people are still facing, myself included. Can't find anything at AT&T or Apple's web sites about that either. Any suggestions out there? I was told by AT&T phone rep to keep "power cycling" until it eventually get service.

Exchange working

I have the personal plan and Exchange works perfet.

I'm using the original iPhone and original iPhone plan and I have Exchange working. It took me a while to guess all of the settings this weekend. I'm unaware of any changes needed by our IT guy but I'll be checking that out this week. Critical for me was guessing the server name (different than IMAP) and getting the username (with domain name) correct. Mine is something like "DOMAIN1\me". SSL is on, I don't remember setting it one way or another. Incidently, one of the reasons I have not upgraded to the 3G yet is because the new plans are annoying. My company pays the monthly fee but I still think this is crap.

What I have now:
1) Push email - seems to be working well. 2 key aspects: First, the email is just there when I open the app. Not too amazing if you are an ex-BB person, but it certainly is better than before. It was taking forever to check email via IMAP -- literally a minute or so, sometimes longer. This only seemed to be with the Exchange account. The gmail IMAP is/was working well. Second, the time to load the text for an individual email is much better. It takes about 1 second for the email to go from a "header only" view to "full text" over edge. Faster over wifi. This would often take enough time for me to give up or attempt to blow a blood vessle. I would notice that when we landed on a plane trip the BB users would be responding to email and I hadn't even finishing downloading mine.

2) Calendar - I have 2 calendars set up "Home" and "Exchange" (what I named that account). The calendar sync'ing is working flawlessly. I'm really happy about that. I've tested a number of different cases and it seems to be working well. I have also received invites for meetings and responded. Looks to be working though I haven't confirmed everything.

One other note: Someone mentioned that they have a Blue calendar. I have a red calendar for Exchange and orange for my Home calendar. Maybe this is configurable(?)

3) Contacts - Looks like this is all working too. I'm not sure if it is picking up the global address list from the server or my local outlook or both. I haven't done enough research to figure that out. Actually, it just occurred to me that I had never even realized that the Contacts might be syncing wirelessly. So, it must be enough like it was before that I hadn't noticed.

In the contact app, the search button is hard to hit without hitting the plus which is annoying. Google search app seems to be better.

Anecdotally, I did notice that the battery drained a lot yesterday. I need to do some research to see if the push email is to blame. All of my other accounts are set to manual.

Incidently (and nothing to do with exchange), I had 3 calls today that went to voicemail while I was sitting here without ringing the phone. That has never happened to me before and is completely annoying. Of course, when I dial my iPhone from my desk it rings every time. If anyone can point me to a link that might detail a solution, I would appreciate it.

The only other GSM network in the US is T-mobile.. and that has even less coverage than AT&T.

I totally agree...what happened?

I have been speaking with a number of friends and it seems to me that people break down into 2 categories...

1. I am getting an iPhone for the first time
2. I had a gen1 iPhone and am upgrading

For the most part the people getting their first iPhone are all pleased, whereas, all the people upgrading who had a stable phone previously...aren't so happy..

I wrote up my thoughts...

And I totally get that and I understand that most likely they are both just pointing to the same thing (the same way on an iPod touch how it has a videos button and a music button, but they both basically take you to the iPod function from the iPhone). What I'm saying is having an icon for the address book and a Phone app is completely pointless and wastes screen real estate and creates a semi-confusing redundant behavior. Can you get rid of the address book app the same way you can get rid of other downloaded applications or will you just have to throw it onto another page?

Previously, you couldn't add contacts while taking a call. I'm guessing you can add contacts now while on a call by using that app. I haven't tried it yet though.

If it is that troubling for you, you might want to try meditation. :D
