I don't see why people say it's just a small upgrade. I'm my opinion the 3gs is a bigger update than the 3g. The faster processor and different internals marks this as the beginning of the next the iphones.

You will be able to do things on the 3gs that simply won't run on the earlier models.

i HIGHLY doubt that. what sort of things wouldn't run on the 3g that will on the 3gs?

New design
For the life of me, I can't figure out why people want this. Personally, I think changing the design of it would be stupid. Why have to get another case? I think the physical design of the 3G is awesome and I see zero reason to change it.

Now, admittedly, I am one of those that said that this new phone was not worth the price. Of course, I was referring to the 699 Price. If I can get this phone, at an upgrade rate, I will snap it up in a heartbeat.

3GS Upgrades:

Faster Processor
More RAM
2 Levels of Cache Instead of 1
Video Camera
Extra MP on the Camera
Auto Focus instead of Fixed Focus
Voice Control
Compass
Better Headphones with Volume Control

Compare that to:

Slimmer case.
3G
GPS

Yes, this upgrade is a pretty big one in comparison.

What I dont understand is, you people want all these new features(i.e OLED screen, 5mp camera, front facing camera, some want N WiFi, some even want 64GB of FLASH storage) but do you know how much more that would cost? If every one of those options put into the iPhone the cost would double if not triple to make and when a phone triples in cost to make it also triples how much they sell the phone for and people are already complaining about $399 some even about $199, if even half of those options were installed you would be looking at $399/$499/$599 for 64GB with upgrade Early upgrade would be around $599/$699/$799 and no commitment at like $799/$899/$999.
So before complaining about the features it adds and already complaining about the current price look at how much newer that technology is, so it will forsure cost much more. just something to look at

Also just another tidbit, would be that why spend the money to research a new case, and have to charge even more for the phone, when the current one other than the bezel is fine? I also dont understand that these were the same prices Apple charged for the iPhone 3G when released and iPhone 3G S has double the storage, not to mention the faster processor, ram, GPU, better camera, Compass, and more. If you get double storage for the same price why the need to complain?

I think it's quite simple, actually. The people you talk about simply add 'low cost' to the list of what they want. They want 5MP and OLED etc AND they want cheap. It's easy to say, so it must be easy to do.

I know someone like this. It is SO EASY to just name features or suggest add this, add that. But when faced with the challenge of making it pleasant to use, affordable, adequate battery life etc, then it's just not possible. There will always be a problem, either features, battery life or cost. Every product ever made is a compromise between at least these three things.

I'm delighted with Apple products precisely because they focus on a balance of features and usability, they don't simply throw in every feature ever made, like useless gigapixels in the cameras, just to crank out higher numbers that look better in a spec sheet.

also

if they redesigned the case it would mean that all the 3G stuff would be incomparable so the guy that has a great 3G leather case oir skin has too by a new one or any other accessory's such as the docking unit right down too the car radio they might have upgraded. keeping the 3GS in the same case saves people a ton on current stuff they might have. and also saves new buyers a ton since there is a much larger pool to buy from over all reducing the cost. also lowers the cost for apple on a redesign. and they could have probably come out with a 20MB phone a 1200 MHZ processor a microwave and a blender and somebody would probably still complain it's not enough.

HA. I could cut that 3GS list in half....watch:

Spec upgrade-(won't be used in Apps since devs need the 40,000,000 consumer base to sell their apps)
Video camera - (Jailbreak a 3g, worthless)
compass - (wow.....a compass)
voice control - (because you're going to be the moron yelling at his phone in the airport when everyone looks at you awkwardly)

so...you equate 3G to voice control and GPS to a compass? You're rather naive to think any of the upgrades to the 3GS are even remotely as useful as the upgrades to the 3G. Apple even acknowledged the 3GS is a minor upgrade by keeping the 3G name. If it was "significant" don't you think they would have given it a better name than the 3G S?

But, I doubt you'll take any of this to heart, you're simply the same as any other fanboy trying to justify their money spending.

Sorry, but your coments are idiotic.

A jailbroken video recorder records at 15 fps. Apple's implementation doubles that quality.

The faster processor is NEW architecture. By your logic Apple could never upgrade the processor because app developers would leave out 40 million+ users with old architecture. That isn't the case. Of course developers will utilize the new processor. It's absurd to think that developers will only develop for the slow ARM processor forever.

The name stayed as 3G because that is the cell communication it uses!

Voice control is a great update that includes more than simply yelling into your phone to make a phone call.

I don't need to justify my purchase. Why would I? If I didn't want it I wouldn't buy it!

WRONG. It also helps EVERY app run better. Apps open faster as well as web surfing being faster.

Video camera - (Jailbreak a 3g, worthless)

WRONG. Worthless? Yea, jailbreak your phone, which is a possible warranty break, for a video camera that is half as good. Sure, that is a choice, but to say the new camera is "worthless" is, well, stupid.

compass - (wow.....a compass)

You are not thinking out side of the box and you are just keeping the mental image of a 10 dollar compass from your camping store. But I bet apps are going to be made that use it. Not only that, but with the compass and GPS, you really don't need TomTom unless you are just dying to have your phone talk to you.

voice control - (because you're going to be the moron yelling at his phone in the airport when everyone looks at you awkwardly)
LOL.

FAIL.

I am going to be the guy in my car that DOESN'T wreck because I am scrolling through hundreds of contacts trying to find the person I want to call.

You, on the other hand, will be the guy that causes a 4 car pile up while you are scrolling through your phone looking for the contact you want to call.

I just love how people throw that asinine term around. I got your fanboy pal.

I see 5 laptops in my den and there isn't an apple logo in site. Actually, I am not a fanboy, I am an intelligent person who was also trashing this upgrade. Until I read posts on this board and started thinking outside the box. You can spin it any way you want.

This upgrade is FAR bigger than the 3G upgrade was.

(OH, and I also find it convenient that you left off the camera improvements.)

What harm is it doing? The site is just as useful as it has always been and what is required is some selectivity when it comes to what one reads and what one replies to.

This forum is what it is, hardly a site designed to create world peace or find a cure for cancer.

What harm? None. But the point is, theres countless numbers of the exact same thread on here and it really isn't necessary. That is all.

You forgot a few:

-More RAM
-2 Levels of Cache Instead of 1
-Extra MP on the Camera
-Auto Focus instead of Fixed Focus - for picture quality this is a big deal, more so than a big pixel upgrade
-Better Headphones with Volume Control

-Processor upgrade lets me use higher bitrate videos. My favorite use for these devices is watching a show when I get some free time. Forget the improved responsiveness or that fact that your previous gen phone will not be able to properly run those apps that are tailored to this upgrade.
-Video Camera - it's already been well documented that the video camera in a jailbroken 3G is, to use your words, "useless"
-Compass - a bit of a novelty and I'm curious about how they will implement its use. Although, I am a back country hiker....
-Voice control - I won't be yelling. And I'll be in my car. And it's going to be useful.

I hardly think the jailbroken video camera is equal to the one on the 3Gs (not to flame this fire anymore...)but! the jailbroken one is shooting in 384x288 at 6-15 fps compared to the 3Gs shooting in 640x480 at 30fps.
