if companies would stop releasing better, bigger and sexier stuff because people may get upset they would all close down. Bring them on!

I don't get it why people always say that this would kill the touch sales. That's simply not true. And I would say that Apple really doesn't care if you buy an Iphone or touch... if at least you buy any product of them. And with the iphone Apple earns simply more $

the day 32gb iphone hits the street - I am on it!

luv it, being "pumped" for a worthless rumor that has not the barest of citation let alone one that could claim any previous record of success.

This with the iphone not even having the space for chips to get it to 32GB.

While it would be welcome and I'm sure it will, June 09 is probably the earliest it'll be coming.

And some rumor of substance would come up not just mindless ones. What is this the third mindless one in the last two months? It's hilarious.
:p

The rumor is being generated because of the 8GB model drying up in the channel, similar to what happened with the 4GB iPhone not very long after launch when they eliminated it. There are a number of reasons this could be happening such as bad forecasting of demand, switching inventory to Best Buy stores, etc. It is a possibility though that the 8GB model is being eliminated. It's also possible that Apple bumps capacity to coincide with the launch of the HTC android handset which will take standard memory cards and offer greater than 16GB capacity.

Additionally you are mistaken about the capability of the current iPhone model to go to 32GB. Toshiba started production of the 32GB chip which would work with either the iPhone or the iPod Touch back in June of this year, so it's likely that there is high enough quantity to do this if Apple desires.

Next time you feel the need to dump all over a rumor at least try to have your facts straight.

I think people are missing the point. Whenever it is to happen, it won't just be a 32GB upgrade. It will have other things added like video, flash photo, better this, that and the other.

While I'd personally be disappointed if it was to come out so early after the recent 16GB model, I believe the phone market is far more competitive than the computer market. To me this means that refreshes of iphones will end up being more frequent then say an imac or mac book. I'd say there are more "players" producing phones. Admittedly, the iphone seems to be setting the bar to which everyone follows, but it doesn't take long before the iphone competitors catch up or even go a few better and apple have to respond.

Agreed. When we see a 64GB iPod touch, then it'll be countdown time for a 32GB iPhone.

Exactly. I do not know why people insist on there being a 32GB iphone 3g soon. 32GB Flash Memory is very expensive at this point. Apple would need to charge $800 nonsubsidized (to maintain their current profit margins) and ATT would have to sell it for $499 with the subsidized pricing. Remember one 32GB flash memory in the iphone (the ipod touch has 2 slots for memory and the iphone has only one slot for those who do not know this).

There will be a 32GB iphone 3g in the near future. That is a given. October 2008....No way. Probably very late in the year or early 2009 when the pricing for 32GB flash memory go down.

Why have the 32GB new ipod touch and than release a 32GB iphone 3g. This would kill the new ipod touch sales right off the bat.

If there was a 32gb at the 3G launch I would, undoubtedly, have bought it over my 16gb, be daft not to if you can afford it. It really doesn't make much difference to me though, as 32gb still would be far too small for me to even consider using it for music - I'm one of those people who want *all* my music or nothing, and I'm not interested in constantly rotating playlists. Meaning, if I had a 32gigger I'd use it the same as my 16gb, purely for videos and podcasts (which 16gb is more than enough for my usage), accompanied by my 160gb Classic for music purposes. Tbh, I wouldn't be interested in a 64gb iPhone either, I'm far too used to the luxury of 160gb of music at high bitrates.

I held out from getting original iPhone cos i hoped the 3G would be a 32Gb model .... i bought a 3G anyway on 11th july but for me 16Gb is just that little bit too annoying to manage all the time .... i am continually having to adjust playlists and podcast syncing to ensure i keep within the limit.

If i had 32Gb i could leave the music and other media i wanted on there all the time and podcasts would sync all the time without trouble ... would mean a load less messing for me ....

I hope O2 is generous and gives an early update option.
Didn't they do that when the 16Gb model came out last year?

Again, you are making the mistake of assuming that Apple pays anywhere close to wholesale prices for flash.

Guess what? They don't. Apple pays the lowest prices for flash memory in the world. So even if Sandisk pays $300 for a 32GB flash chip Apple would pay nowhere near as much. The reason is that while Sandisk might sell 10,000 large memory units per quarter, Apple will sell a million or more.

There might be no 32GB iPhone this year, but the reasons certainly wouldn't be that they would have to sell it at $800.

And as to the insistence that there will be no 32GB version of the current iPhone, that's just silly, as people also insisted there would be no 16GB version of the 1st generation iPhone and we all know how that one panned out.

Cell phone industry is insanely competitive and consumers are fickle, willing to pay early termination fees, etc, just to get the latest handset. Android is dropping next week and it wouldn't surprise me at all if Apple "wowed" us with a 32GB iPhone model before Xmas 2008.

Man, this would be so cool. The wife and I will hopefully getting iPhones within the next two months, and an introduction of a 32 GB iPhone with a price drop to the 16 GB would be incredible. I'm not holding my breath, but man oh man... *stares off into space*

It would be sweet is Apple released the 32GB iPhone 3G during the same week as the release of the Android to steal some of it's thunder.

I should point out that there's one more piece to the puzzle in all of this.

Apple originally was planning a 4GB limited edition iPod Nano that was apparently killed to compete more effectively with the Zune.

Right now Apple have the following product using 8GB SSD chips;

8GB Nano
16GB Touch (2X 8GB chips)
8GB iPhone

It could in fact make sense for Apple to start to migrate some products off of the 8GB flash if supply is constrained, especially now that 32GB pieces are coming into production.

32gb is not enough for me. waiting for the 64gb version, which is probably 2 years from now...

I don't see too many people being upset. I'm satisfied with the 16gig.

I can see it being a problem for people who need/want to store all their media on the phone but with applications such as "Simplify", I am able to stream all my music that I haven't loaded on to the phone from home.

Edit: Though you will need a good data plan. I have 6gig/month and come no where close to that.

Plus the #16 is my favorite number lol. I'll be fine.

Certainly it's completely in the eyes of the user how much storage is enough. My sister has had iPods for years now and still doesn't have 4GB worth of material, where as I listen to a lot of eclectic stuff and struggle to get down to just 12GB of music files.

I find it inconvenient to manage my library so I'd rather just get something with the storage to hold me for another 2 yrs until larger capacity devices come along rather than having to constantly shuffle media around to get the latest few episodes of a TV show onto the device for when I go on a business trip.

No way. A 32gb iphone is very likely coming out within 6 months or so and no 64gb iphone for 2 years would mean no capacity upgrades for a year and a half? nope. I expect a 64gb version to follow the 32gb version after about 9 months.

I think it might be hard for some to accept that the new phone they bought a short time ago might be eclipsed soon by better versions. Nonetheless, that's the way it goes.

Totally agree with you. There are many people out there that need the space. Myself, I do not.

I keep very few audio files on this phone. I like to use the internet radio apps and with one click of a button (ok... maybe 2 or 3), I am able to see / listen to over 40gigs of music stored on my computer as if it were on the device itself. Not to mention being able to view other members audio files on their computer and stream to mine.

There are ways around size issue. Just wanted to make sure people are aware of it :D

This part I will have to disagree with. Listening to low bitrate, low sound quality streamed music is not at all the same as getting it directly from the device.

I don't have a golden ear but I did buy decent (Shure) headphones for my iPods and the difference in sound quality between low bitrate streaming and high quality or lossless audio files is extremely evident.

32 GB... Nice!

Now when they fix the cracking, cheap chrome bezel, and add some better speakers.... I'll upgrade my edge model

Or I'll just wait for the HTC HD

16GB is more than enough for me. I couldn't care less, but still seems to be a bit annoying...

If you could care less, why is it annoying?

I have all of half of the space in my 16gb filled, mostly with video that I won't watch again.

It's more than enough for me. If it jumps to 100gb today I would have no problems with my phone... it would still be plenty for me.

If people NEED more than 16gb, they should have either a) waited for a larger model, or b)upgrade for a higher cost and not complain.

There are two things you can count on.

1. Apple will upgrade its products.
2. Memory gets larger and cheaper.

I'd infer from this that memory in things like phones will increase. Should Apple arbitrarily delay upgrading models just so some whiners won't complain? Noting those 2 certainties above, people still still ALWAYS complain. Some people can't be pleased.

I fail to see the element of surprise here...

Apple has been doing this for as long as I can remember. Small, incremental improvements at defiantly short intervals. While it's somewhat of a universal rule that hi-tech always has a short best before date, Apple has taken it to whole other level. With them it's an artform, there's no "oops, we managed to improve this product", it's a cold and calculated scheme (I guarantee you that they had the 32GB model ready on the same day they had the 8 and 16 GB models). Their whole business model is based on the idea that Apple fans love the products so much that their tolerance for getting screwed is higher than normal. They get ass-rammed by Apple and tossed in a corner like a floppy rag doll, but they still come crawling back begging for more.

Will many people be upset? Yes.
Does Apple care? No.
Will the upset people swear to boycott Apple? Yes.
Will they really boycott Apple? No. They'll buy the 32GB model. And the 64GB model that comes out 3 months later.

While I understand listening to a lower bitrate and sound quality can put a damper on the enjoyment (radio stations) ; I have just tested Simplify with the same song streamed from my mac at home & the same file that is already stored on my iPhone.

While I don't know much about the compression used to stream audio files on a 3G network, I have noticed no change in sound quality. To my ears, it works wonders.

With only a 5 second buffer. <- and that I will not complain about.
