OK go on believing what they feed you. Ma Bell is alive and well and as rich and powerful (and crappy) as ever in the good ol' US of A.

Powerful not quite, maybe in the South and East Central US. Anywhere else, its either Verizon, Quest or regional services.

On the cell wireless network side of things might I recall the fact AT&T is investing $19 Billion on its network to bring it up par with Europe

Thanks for solidifying my point by mentioning 2 of the other big name rich powerful crappy price gouging company's. And for pointing out just how far behind we here in the US are. We may actually be on the same page.

just wanted to point out how similar this looks to General Motors.

Few Americans realized its problems while the majority basically said "well, it's the best we can do, so, let's live with it. GO AMERICA!!!!" while the corporate executives were getting sooooo much money, the company went bust

With the difference GM produced cars that burned more cash than your current data plan does in a month. So, in the end, AT&T still sticks out as a better company.

Think of it, GM gave you a car (non-upgradable) at say 18 mi/gal (being generous). AT&T gives you in many markets a Data Plan at 3.6Mb/s. That speed is upgradable, the GM model's mileage isn't.

So AT&T will in the future charge you the same $30 for 7.2Mb/s fast data and GM will have charged you an exorbitant amount of cash for a gas guzzler that drains your pocket faster than cell networks.

You have a point. I didn't see it this way.

I don't want this thread to go in a different direction but here it goes.
I saw the parallel in as where European and Japanese cars always strived for efficiency, American companies strived for ... uh nothing except insisting on their superiority of what can only be called inadequacies (such as GM producing Hummers for the quintessential American "Bad-ass" image) while ignoring everything else.

The difference is in that we can buy European and Japanese cars but we have no choice when it comes to mobile carriers

Remember when you had no choice on cable television? The companies divided up the city and you only got what you had.
Until satellite television kicked in, you paid an exorbitant amount of money for about 70 unnecessary channels. Now that there's competition, cable companies are providing better service.

It's not that they are unable to do it.
When the gun is pointing at them, they will do it.

AT&T needs to step ahead and stop following. It's the best we have but it's really sad that the country that consumes 40% of the world's resources has AT&T as its best mobile carrier.
