I forgot to mention that the guy who processed my preorder told me that they might get the preordered phones in on the 18th, and that I "may" be able to pick them up that night. He gave me his card and told me to check with him that afternoon to see if they can do that.

We'll see, I doubt it, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Yeah that was a waste of words... lol We cannot launch a phone until it's officially launched.

<rant> The time I had preordering was a pain. I went to one AT&T store and waited an hour in a half to be served and they can't do preorders. I showed their release to their manager and he just blew me off and stated no store is doing it today. Ended up going to a store a quarter mile away and was the "first" to order (someone on the phone said that 5 were before me but when I got there, they said i was the first to officially pay or something). </rant>

One question on the preordering topic topic. When I got to the AT&T store, they said that it was back ordered although I was first (or at least top 6). Anyone else experience this?

I actually get discount on the $30 data plan for the iphone 3g, so like 3 bux. along with my $4 discount on call plans with my FAN/Premier account. So i would think i would also get the discount for the 3gs.

The phones are sent directly to the store from Direct Fulfillment. If it says that they are back ordered then the Distribution Center that sends for your region might be running low on inventory, but this early before the launch there should be no problem with you receiving your phone on launch day... Any specific questions please PM me and I will be glad to answer.

I ordered at an ATT store today. Just for a datapoint:

Direct fulfillment.

Said I'd get an email notice when it ships and arrives at store. Can track online.

They'll call me when it gets there.

It will have my name on the box and I can get it whenever I want.

CC will be charged when ships to the store.

Manager said in a conference call was told preorders early this week should for sure be filled. Said Monday orders were "quite a bit" less than they were anticipating.

Said APPLE promises store delivery on the 19th, but made clear he's not making that promise. Obviously doesn't want to deal with unhappy people.

Kind of curious if it will show up on the 18th and talk them into picking it up.

Paid $18 upgrade fee on bill.

It was all pretty easy and they were helpful and forthcoming. I ordered there because I'll be moving my EDGE phone over to my wife for a family plan under FAN and want to get that all hashed out in store and would prefer giving them the sale for their assistance. Plus, I saved $18 over the Apple store. I'm all for not waiting in line. Good system.

FYI

I pre-ordered online and was able to pre-order 2 iPhone 3Gs black 32 gb iPhones. For some reason the one per household limit did not apply for me.

I called to be sure and they verified 2 will be shipped to my home on or before the 19th.

I pre-ordered the 32 gigger on att.com. It took all of two minutes. They have FREE overnight shipping, and state that it could arrive as early as the 19th. :)

i pre ordered using premier and i called customer service, the guy i talked to said I have to pick it up at the att store, regardless of what shipping i selected and I have to get it activated there. Doesn't matter, i need have them switch my contacts to the new sim anyway.

btw...the tax just killed me. $55 for the 16gigger

for some reason I don't see it on the premier store?

just order 32gb black iphone at the store. 5 mins in and out. wham bam thank you.

was told they'll have it next friday. if they don't, i'll be majorly pissed.

I preordered at Apple store. They had hundreds of 3Gs last year and I will be waiting in line now.

I walked in to my AT&T store today and wanted to make sure that I'd be able to use my brother or mom's upgrade (which I could) and to make sure everything else would be set. He said that if I ordered it sometime soon that I would have it on the 19th. I told him I'd be in tomorrow (when I get paid) and he said that I should be good to go. :)

On your receipt there is a tracking number you can use to follow the phone from when it ships to when it is delivered to the AT&T store.

tax is crazy. CSR also told me that if i order today or tomorrow I should be able to have it by the 19th. what's confusing is that he said I have to pick it up at an att store. the options were delivery to my house. I don't know if they'll select a store for me to pick it up at. anybody have any input on this?

I went to the AT&T store today with my friend who wanted to buy a 3G for $99. I decided to go with him to see if I could pre-order the 3GS even though I'm not eligible b/c I got the 3G at launch.

So I ask the greeter there if I could pre-order the 3GS and he says "no, they are on back order." I say fine and just wait with my friend to buy his 3G.

When he is being rung up, I ask the sales rep if I could order and he says yes. One of my lines on the family plan was eligible for full upgrade, so I got it under her name for the $199/$299 price point. He says he'll just swap the sim cards or do whatever they do.

So I've been so stoked all day, I got the Black 32GB for $318.44 total with tax (FL 6.5%) - I didn't pay that $55 tax or whatever a lot of people said they were charged when ordering online.

Anyway - now I can't wait!!

I went into a core store today to pre-order mine so I could get the extention to return my 8gig becuase i purchased it durring this att grace period. The store manager blew me off saying they were not going to honor that, I asked nicely you would jip a fellow att emp. And he walked away! Flustered went out to my car drove around the store and talked to a manager at customer service who then called the store and informed them again about the policy they "have" to honor. Went back into the store and now have a pre-ordered 16 gig :D

Here's my experience:

My wife and I got to the AT&T store this afternoon and pre-ordered two 16GB iPhones. Total with tax was $208.xx per phone (5% VA sales tax, on the subsidized price).

While our very attentive sales rep was entering the information I said "So I read online that the pre-orders here don't actually mean you're going to definitely get the phone on day one, right?" He said that basically the store stocks have not been determined yet, but what he has been told is that anyone who pre-orders will have their phone waiting for them at the AT&T store for pickup that day. Beyond that, they'll have some kind of arbitrary number (he said 50, but was just using that as an example) to provide to others who had not pre-ordered.

He seemed rather well-informed, and was rather adamant that we'd have our phones on launch day. He also mentioned that this particular store did not have set plans for an early launch. He said there would definitely be something, but they just need to finalize everything with scheduling and whatnot. So from what it sounds like, and what I experienced, going in to an AT&T store is a very painless way to get things done if you want two new iPhones on a family plan!

Big thanks to Sergio from AT&T for being a great CSR.

So what I'm understanding, after reading this thread, is Direct Fulfillment orders (which our two phones are) will ship with our names on them directly to the store, on our behalf. The fact that we've ordered so early (one day after the announcement) means that we have a quite high chance of our phones getting to the store on the 19th. Hope so!

This is very organized way of doing things. Rather than throwing a bunch of phones out there, centralized distribution sends out purchased inventory.

As I understand it, when your phone ships, it's yours. You have paid for it. If it's not there waiting for you, AT&T just violated all kinds of things.
