Without a picture we don't really know how cracked it is. All the OP said was

"corner of the screen cracked on the bottom right and upper top corner."

it could be a tiny crack, it could be a corner missing. It could be a hairline crack or it could look like a spider's web

irrelevant anyway. You breaka - you paya

"people" like you should just shut up and not say anything. im trying to get some help for my situation. i dont know about return policies all that well. im not trying to screw anyone over or think im better then anyone. i did break it and im willing to live with that but i was just trying to see if maybe the warranty could help. when rude "people" or MORAL police start attacking u for no reason, its just not called for. im just someone who wants to know other peoples stories. it can happen to anyone...and i think most people would like assistance...not an attitude from ignorant "people"

people like me? wtf? i dropped my phone and im pretty sad that it cracked so easily. i guess "people" like me shouldnt be upset that there phone broke huh? come on...anyways.

Yep. "Cracked so easily." It's plastic not titanium.

I am not saying you shouldn't be upset, but be upset with yourself and not Apple. Asking if you can return it because you accidentally dropped and broke it is absurd. There is a thing called insurance for such incidents.

First of all - if we're ignorant, why seek advice from us?

Second - the only REAL way to know if you can return something or whatever is to go to where you bought it and try.

No one here knows the extent of your damage or every store policy/employee who might bend the rules.

But the question itself - returning an item you admit to breaking yourself - is in itself fairly obvious and logical. Which is why you've gotten the response you've gotten.

Come on, you obviously came here hoping to hear what you wanted to hear. And since you're not getting that, you're getting mad. No one's being as rude as they could be; mostly they're just amazed that you even think you can get a replacement when you broke the iPhone.

GIVE ME A BREAK!!! You can't be serious? Right off the bat, you're already asking us if something you broke can still be returned within the 14-day return window, and it became very obvious what you wanted to hear. Don't come to us to justify your dishonest intentions, if you're old enough to purchase an iPhone, you're old enough to know what are the morals in purchasing stuff.

I bought a new car just recently, and despite putting on 3M invisible shields on it, I still got a knick on my hood from a flying rock. Even though I baby this car as you babied your iPhone, why should I be surprised that it happened.

If you don't want to get fronted by the moral police, then stop trying to ask the moral police for directions

OP, I logged on to say that yes, you seem to be out of luck, and also to tell you to ignore the trolls who feel like their life is accomplished by judging people's moral characters on their precious forums because all they want is to get a reaction out of you. Yes, it doesn't really make sense for people to think that it's okay to get something replaced that they themselves broke. No, that's not the point of this thread.

If anything, I'm wondering how a 3GS dropped 3 feet WITH A CASE onto a RUG surface that would cause its screen to crack. Do you have wooden or hard floors underneath the rug? I'm guessing the rug wasn't thick enough in combination with just about the worst luck ever. Sorry OP

Can't you read? He said the rug is made out of stone.

Lotsa jerks on the internet... I'm sure that they make mistakes too, but they'd rather point out others' mistakes. My theory is that it's because they don't get enough sunshine and human interaction--don't take it personally!

I would not pay $200 to get the screen replaced. First of all, Best Buy is one of the most lenient stores in terms of returns. Even if you are not successful one time, I would try again on a different day at a different time of day. Not sure what story you should give them though... probably shouldn't lead with "I dropped it."

If that does not work, then you should be able to make the repair yourself. Unfortunately, 3GS parts are not really on the market for 3rd party vendors right now, so you'll either have to live with it or try it with the 3G screen. The 3G screen should fit, but I don't know if they changed any of the cabling, a la the charger pins. Since that could lead to an even worse situation, I would probably just live with it until you can get 3GS specified parts.

If that time comes there are several vendors, so you should shop around for the best deal, but go ahead and bookmark ifixit, because their teardown instructions are excellent. You can probably get a good suction cup from your local dollar store and a good stiff guitar pick is much better than their case opening tools (at least for the 5th gen ipods). I would expect the cost to be closer to $60-80, so maybe it's not worth the trouble for you.

insure it with squaretrade or compcoach, wait 30 days, put in a claim, get a new/refurbed phone. or i would do what another member already stated, just take it into the store have them put a new screen in for 2bills.

The squaretrade warranty is $80, + $50 since its accidental damage = $130 in repairs. Also if they cant fix it they will send you $400, which won't cover a new device. $400 check from squaretrade - $80 = $320. A new iPhone is $600 out of contract. You still need to pay $280 if you want another. -or- pay Apple $200 to fix it.

The Apple Return policy is 14 days on products (30 for the iPhone). If the phone is damaged, they are not allowed to take the product back, although it has been done with managers exception. As for the warranty, I would consider the return policy in line with the warranty. Anything that would not be covered under the warranty would not be a returnable reason. Taken from the iPhone 3Gs Warranty book:

Apple is not responsible for damage arising from failure to follow instructions relating to the
product’s use.
This warranty does not apply: (a) to consumable parts, such as batteries, or protective
coatings designed to diminish over time unless failure has occurred due to a defect in
materials or workmanship; (b) to cosmetic damage, including but not limited to
scratches, dents, and broken plastic on ports; (c) to damage caused by use with non-
Apple products; (d) to damage caused by accident, abuse, misuse, liquid spill or
submersion, flood, fire, earthquake or other external causes; (e) to damage caused by
operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (f) to
damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone
who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple authorized wireless service provider);
(g) to a product or part that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without
the written permission of Apple; or (h) to defects caused by normal wear and tear or
otherwise due to the normal aging of the product or (i) if any Apple serial number has
been removed or defaced.

Sell that one, buy you a new one at bestbuy and get their insurance for the iPhone it covers accidents. It 15 a month, some people think that's to much but they forget that the price of the iPhone and the AT&T plans (for the iPhone) are premium prices.
