A used 8GB iPhone 3G is worth $300-$350

I don't understand what the problem is. AT&T does not reclaim your old phone. Your phone can be sold on craigslist.

Early upgrade pricing is $399. Sell your old phone for $300 (this is on the low side, in SF, a $300 iPhone 3G offered on craigslist in the morning will have a buyer on your doorstep with cash before lunch).

New iPhone 3GS $399
- used iPhone 3G $300
-------------------------
upgrade cost = $99 + taxes, or less.

The old iPhone 3G retains its value because the totally unsubsidized price of an iPhone 3G is still $499 (for the person who loses or breaks a phone, this is their replacement price).

If you qualify for the $199/$299 upgrade pricing, good for you. You'll probably make money on the deal. But even at $399/$499, it's good.

I'm rather annoyed that they wouldn't accept anything but credit cards for preorder. I just finished getting rid of the blasted things.

Order from Apple

I have a 4GB first gen, kinda redundant. I ordered my 32GB from
Apple right after the announcement and it will be in my office on the 19th. Can't get much easier than that. If preorders go well enough and since it's so easy I wonder if there will be stock issues for people wanting one on release day.

This might have already been answered. So, if I paid the full 499 for my iphone, then will I still have to sign a 2 year contract, or will I be free to leave after one more year?

don't know if this info has been posted, but i just got an email from apple regarding the shipping on my iphone 3gs..

Why is blogger guy's head permanently tilted?

Why is he called "blogger guy" when he's a corporate shill with a permanently tilted head?

Why does the camera move in and out after so many sentences but his head remains tilted?

Why would I want him to "talk to me soon" in his peculiar, world-gone-sideways way?

Received the same e-mail. Did your order status page change to reflect "delivery on June 19"?

My own still states ships June 19.

Possible Way To Change Your Upgrade Date

If in fact your upgrade date is determined from your monthly bill amount, which has not been confirmed, there may be a way to change your upgrade date. According to the AT&T site (http://www.wireless.att.com/learn/why/upgrade-advantage.jsp) your Monthly Recurring Cost (MRC) is based on a three month average of your rate plan plus selected data features. In my case, I am eligible on 12/12 after joining AT&T by purchasing the 3G on the first day it was available. I currently pay $89 a month before taxes and fees. If I increase my bill by enough to raise my 3 month average to over $99 it is possible my upgrade date will change to July.

This would follow the theory that your upgrade date is determined by your monthly rate. People that pay over $99 a month may be the ones getting a July upgrade. This would explain why the primary line of a family plan would get the upgrade and secondary lines would not. According to this site (http://www.wirefly.com/upgrades/eligibility/att/) I fall in the middle range, which may explain my December upgrade date. Upgrade dates after this may be caused by having a lower monthly rate.

Does this match people's upgrade dates/monthly rates? Or does anyone have straight answers from AT&T?

I tried to see if an Upgrade to iPhone 3GS option appeared in MyRogers today, but there's no option. Even if there was, I'm not allowed to do a hardware upgrade until 20 December. Fair enough, considering it's at 3yr contract price :)

So am I to understand that if i preorder online that my device will be on my door step june 19th or is it going to ship then?

My order status page does not reflect the Delivers on 19th, but I did get the same email. Hopefully Apple can fix our order summaries so we can all sleep at night... :D

Just to shed light on one of the early posts, I was able to preorder 2 iphones for the 2 lines on my family plan without any issues. This was at an AT & T store. There was no restriction to 1 preorder. It was processed as 2 separate transactions. Lastly, they stated that the first-come, first-served will not be an issue and I can pick up my phones at any time on the 19th.

Also, received subsidized pricing but have been month-to-month for the last year, so thats not really helpful to most in this thread.

Straighten Up!!

To the Dude in the video...

You're giving me a stiff neck. Straighten up!!!

I'm sending you the bill for the Mountain Dew sprayed on my monitor. :D

Screw AT&T

AT&T has posted a walkthrough video explaining how to order the new iPhone 3GS and what pricing you can expect. Unlike the iPhone 3G launch, Apple and AT&T are allowing pre-orders on the iPhone 3G S which means you can order today to get your handset by June 19th.

Video: link

The iPhone 3GS will be available for $199/16GB and $299/32GB for "new and qualifying" customers. The existing 8GB and 16GB 3G models can also be purchased for $99 or $149 (while supplies last).

On launch day (June 19th), two lines will form at 7 a.m. local time at the AT&T retail stores. Customers who had pre-ordered will be able to pick up their iPhone 3GSs at that time, while customers who wish to purchase that day will have to wait until the store opens at normal business hours.

I thinks since AT&T are expecting so many new users that no one should go until they give us MMS and better upgrade pricing.

i am going to call AT&T and try and haggle my way into july. my bill is like 97.90 a month.

I don't see why current 3G owners expected to get a better price on the new 3GS. There is no incentive for them to give owners a break. They know none of you are budging if you are willing to do anything to upgrade for any update apple puts forth. Unlike the EDGE to 3G transition, you wouldnt be giving AT&T any more money than they receive presently.

Contrary to what you all want to believe, AT&T and Apple aren't in the business of giving away anything. The only reason why AT&T made upgrading to the 3G more attractive was to get an extra $20 or so with the increased monthly bill and eliminate the hemorrhaging from the botched unlockable business plan.

The uproar this has caused demonstrates that AT&T is approaching things precisely the right way. Face it, all of you will do almost anything to upgrade and will.

i don't think you could be more wrong. i think a lot of people are going to sit out, which makes this such a losing bet for AT&T.

I actually hope that those who were early adopters of the first 2 iPhone versions wait until well after launch as I think we need to send a clear message to AT&T and Apple that they should have been more considerate of their loyal customers and been very honest and open about their upgrade policy a year ago when we all signed contracts.

They need to realize that we're the ones who caused them to have such long lines for the past two launches. I hope there is not a single line this year and there will be no repeat customers come launch day unless the policy changes.
