I just don't get it... everyone clapping when video was announced... like if that was a really exciting new feature... please... i already had video in my Nokia before having my iPhone...

I truly believe that Apple should have launched iPhone 3G S as the first generation iPhone... the first generation was really weak...the 3G one..better, but still missing some key features... now iPhone has become the product they announced it would be in the first time!

The first iPod wasn't much either. Didn't mean all the iPods after it were doomed to failure and sucked. Apple builds up over time. They don't release half completed features and promise to fix them later (excluding MobileMe, hopefully they have that behind them). They're trying to build the next platform and they want to get it right, not be hamstringed like DOS did to desktops.

Heh, I know how angry AT&T can make you but a contract is a contract.

And good business is good business.

And I never said that I would dishonor that contract.

But good business is not showing favoritism for one customer over another when the one receiving the favor does not appear to be as "qualified" as the one who does not receive that favor.

I agree that AT&T should post their method for determining their upgrade policy. It would still cause the same amount of moaning but would be more fair. Additionally, the reason people that bought the original iphone did not have to pay for the 3G upgrade was the original was not subsidized. See how a little misinformation can be so confusing?

Yes they were. Two months after launch the price dropped $200. I believe that was a subsidy, no?

yep, agree with you 100%

Not only are you an idiot, you are a condescending one too. Apparently you don't understand business very well.

The $149 plan that would be about $120 if the second line wasn't on it (It does not have a subsidized phone.)

Still, a $149 customer is get this a $149 customer. This is revenue they are getting from a customer, regardless of if it is two lines or one.

Any company who would disregard that, as you suggest, is quite foolish.

Only because of the idiot comment will I reply because I like your moxie!!

I did not make the rules nor do I think they are fair. I simply stated the rules and everyone is pissed at me.

You still owe AT&T money for your iPhone 3G that you agreed to pay. So completely your end of the deal and then buy the next iPhone when you have paid for the current one.

I posted on these forums before the announcement of the new iPhone and warned people that they would not get something for nothing. Everyone in that forum thought that the magical apple would bring them a phone that they could upgrade and not have to pay for it. I simply stated the facts and everyone was upset. Now the reality of cell phone carriers not actually wanting to lose money and give away phones has happened and everyone is upset. Why? That is the only reason I post. People need to relax and think about the situation logically. People who signed a 2 year contract and bought a subsidized phone deserve a new phone when the contract THEY SIGNED is over. It is very simple. AT&T is willing to allow their customers to get a new phone for a lower price as long as they do not lose money. No arguing or reason to be upset.

Again, you're missing the point. Here, lets use a metaphor. Pretend that you have two people. Person A and Person B. For sake of argument lets say they're both identical. Person A gets an apple and Person B gets a single grape. Person B wonders why he got a grape. Person C then comes in and tells Person B that they should be grateful they got a grape and not nothing at all.

Do you see the problem here? You're not trying to help. We all understand contracts. We all understand subsidized pricing. If you read our posts you'd understand this. If you where actually here to help you'd know. If you weren't here for your own personal reasons you'd be less inclined to repeat an irrelevant talking point.

I would like to know what your motive is here. And as far as I can tell you're not here to help. You're here to feel better than others. You're here to "warn" the foolish masses about something that is tangentially related. You're here because of you, not because you care about anyone else. I can understand why you would be doing this. I hope you wouldn't be. I would hope that you were just misunderstanding. But as far as I can see, the incessant name calling, the consistent ability to miss the point, and the overall tone just paints you as a sad person who is trolling for attention. I'm not opposed to giving you attention but at least be truthful.

You only stated part of the rules. You are completely disregarding the other half of the equation. That is AT&T. They are the ones who are changing the rules by saying this person can get out of paying off their iPhone early by buying another one but that person has to wait. Why can't we then tell AT&T to show equal honor of both our contracts?

Is this spreading the subsidy repayments around?

However I must say, from reading about 100 pages of comments in several forums, there are a lot of stupid people who think they are entitled to an apple when they only paid for a grape....I don't think anyone is really disputing the fact that some people are obviously being treated differently...

Ha, lines thats funny. The only people there will be pre-orders who just can't wait to have it shipped to their house.

Due to this pricing thing there will be no lines, or as much hype as the others. Folks will start leaving AT&T since there is no incentive to resign a contract. Think about it. Why sign a new contract 18 months in when you know there will be a new phone in another 6 months. By that time you might not even want the new one or it finally gets opened up. Why would AT&T not want you into 2 more years when its possible the iPhone might go to other carriers? This is just AT&T's way of sticking it to us. Personally if they don't relax on this and let 3G users upgrade after a year (thats understandable) I'll just get it from Apple unsubsidized.

Whatever though, I'll be in touch with retentions come mid July. Thanfully the pre gives us lots of bargaining room.

Differing upgrade eligibility dates, while all contracts have same start date

My family has four iphones.

I got the first generation in October, 2007.
My mom and dad got the first generation in February, 2008.
My brother got the first generation in June, 2008.

We all got the iphone 3g on launch day in July, 2009.

My mom and dad are on a family plan.
My brother and I are on a family plan.

My brother's $299 32GB upgrade eligibility is August 7, 2009.
My father's is December 22, 2009.
Mine is March 16, 2009.
My mother's is March 21, 2009.

All four of us bought the iphone 3G on launch day in July, 2009.

Why are the dates so different?

Does this mean..

Ok, I went to the Apple site and started the ordering process and got the following message. I've been a customer of AT&T for a looooong time. Back before it was Cingular. I've also bought the 1st generation iPhone as well as the 3G. Both purchased about a month after they were released.

As a valued AT&T customer, AT&T can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $18 upgrade fee. You may qualify for a standard iPhone upgrade on 07/14/2009.

Does that mean

1. I'm eligible right now and have to $18 to get it now?
2. I can wait until July, 14th to see if I can upgrade without the $18 charge?
3. I can wait until July, 14th to see if I'm eligible only?

Sounds like a test question

Why are the dates so different?

There must be some algorithm based on plan, length of customer, account history. . .I noticed changes when I wanted to upgrade to an iphone 3g. I have a blackberry. Last November, it stated I wasn't able to get an upgrade until July 2009, then in February this year, the website said I was eligible for a upgrade on March 2009. SO it changed, and there was no reason given. I'm going to get the 3gs with the upgrade but I noticed it changes.

iTunes activation on 3Gs

i talked with one of the :apple: "experts" before i ordered my 3G S and they said you can activate it with itunes. True?

That's the way it's been with the first 2 iphones, so I would assume the 3G S would have a similar registration process.

So how does this work if you're an AT&T customer but have NEVER had an iPhone? I'm 14 months into a 2 year AT&T contract with a Motorola Q. I'd like the new 3GS. The site says I qualify for a reduced price on 12/18/09. I don't mind waiting but is that date chosen because that's much closer to the end of my current 24 month contract? And would my discount upgrade be the same as what current iPhone users would get? And what kind of discount are we talking here?

Thanks.

Am I the only one who thinks AT&T are being a tad optimistic with this whole 'two lines at 7am' thing? Is this upgrade really that hot? I've still got a first generation phone and I'M in two minds. If you're already 3G it doesn't seem worth the expense, plus the whole eligibility thing must eat into the number of people who could buy one even if they wanted one. Can't see too big a line gathering outside my AT&T store at the crack of dawn. I know one thing for sure - I won't be in it.

hmmm

How much will it be for customers who recently got 3G but wants to exchange the iphone? Man, the new features and stuff right now doesn't seem worth it for me to shell out so much money. :( I think I'm slightly disappointed.... I think I've come to expect them to announce groundshattering things.. haha

Even though u have one more year left in the contract can u upgrade with a certain price to get the 3GS??

I have you one better even. I added my wife to my family plan and got here a 3G and now ATT is saying we both have to wait until Jan 2010 to upgrade. The real kicker is I have a 4GB 2G iPhone. Which they stopped sell as of September of 2007. Why do I have to wait. I haven bought a subsidized phone in like 4 years, but I am not eligible until Jan 2010.

You need to call and question that, we have Verizon and both of our phones have seperate "upgrade" dates.
