If your mum doesn't care about having a data plan, then you should be fine. Worst case scenario is AT&T will just add one. I wouldn't consider that bad though since it gives the phone much more functionality. It drives me crazy when I put my personal phone on "disable cellular data" since a lot of apps wont instantly connect like FB/weather, visual voicemail doesnt work, and MMS doesn't work ... those darn caps

Yeah I know. She still doesnt understand what the phones all about. Once they eventually find out or if she decides to add one she will like it a lot more.

She's just one of those people that really doesn't understand technology no matter how hard I try to teach her hahaha

It's nice to know how Verizon had this a while ago too.

I don't AT&T would tell you that this will work. The reps are pretty clueless as it is, and they just repeat what they are told .. that all smartphones require a data plan.
I seriously doubt they would tell you, and as I family share with my mom, I actually tried to get her to find this out from Verizon for me... She never could get an answer. I just assumed I could get them to honor the contract. I can be convincing ;)

I've spent awhile pondering keeping my plan as was by paying full price for the phone, or sucking the EFT up and taking the discount. #1 was my first choice until I had phone issues and didn't have $600 laying around. LOL, hopefully my life/income is stable enough to not hate myself (coming off a nasty divorce) for it.

Lol, and no, I don't think i ever have watched all of Finding Nemo, shhhhhh, don't tell my kids or I will have to watch it tomorrow!

Woah, a bunch of replies.

Anyway, yeah. My moms contract is probably 3 or 4 years old. She had a dumbphone forever and then recently started using my sisters older blackberry sometime last year after she upgraded to an ip4. My mom told me that att Added a data plan automatically when she started using the BB but she was able to convince them to put a block on the acct.

So yeah I guess we will just wait and see what happens. She doesn't really care enough to want it and added right now.

I activated the iPhone yesterday so we will just wait and see what happens.
She maybe be ok if she got them to add what world of life has on his he posted, but because she didn't sign a smartphone "no data required" type of contract it might not work for long.

just updating in case anyone was curious, it's now been over a month and her iPhone still has no cellular data on it. Must be some silly loophole in AT&T.

like I said earlier, you probably haven't bought a smartphone from AT&T ever since AT&T started requiring mandatory data plans.

How functional is the phone? doesn't it give you a warning message every now and then about how you don't have the right plan or something?

With the first iphone you had the option to remove that data plan if you wanted, just you lost the visual voice mail and of coarse EDGE.

works basically like an iPod touch but you can make calls and texts

she can't get MMS, no visual voicemail, and obviously no data.

whatever she still has no ****ing idea how to use the thing even though I try to show her everyday.
