Im the type of guy that can talk my way into or out of anything. I can sell ice to an eskimo. Went to ATT and they could do nothing, which I completely understand. So I called Apple. They guy wanted me to stop using the phone immediately because the glass was shattered (concerned for my safety). After explaining it was the only phone I had, I continued to explain what happened and confessed my love for apple. After a short time on hold he returned and informed me that they would do a one time replacement. Wow!!!! How cool. They will send me a new phone and charge my CC for a replacement phone. Once I return the shattered phone there will be no charges. I also want to add that I dealt with one person the entire time. Yes, I was put on hold a few times, but I dealt with the same guy from beginning to end. I'm very happy with the outcome of this. Apple went beyond the call. I have always been extremely satisfied with their products. This is the first time I've dealt with customer service/technical support regarding a problem. I am a very happy customer and will gladly continue to purchase apple products.

How much are they charging you?

As cool as the iPhone 4 looks, isn't it a bit crazy that Apple is selling us a GLASS iphone? Bumper or not, this thing is going to shatter in record numbers.

It happened to me also. I dropped a week old 4g iphone on wood floor, however the apple store replaced it with new phone on the same day in 10 minutes. I was so pleased. Please check in apple store near you.

So I was pulling my iPhone 4 out of my shorts pocket and it slipped out of my hand and landed in my driveway. I picked it up and the back glass is completly shattered. Im not talking a crack or two, Im talking completely shattered. I have invisishield on both front and back. I measured my pocket height and its only about 30" above the ground. I have dropped my previous cell phones on occasion and have never had an issue. I' am dissapointed but thankfully it still works fine. Now, is there a way to replace my back glass?
I have not purchased a warranty, if I do so will the back glass be covered?
What are my options to repair the back glass?
Please help!

I'm not sure how protective the bumpers are either though! I've seen more than one phone shattered with a bumper on it. Mine is naked so far.

The bumpers may not be the best drop protection for the phone (although it adds better grip to the device). Putting a bumper on my i4 did remove any sort of bar drops when I hold my iPhone and it makes the phone nearly impossible to slide off a table. The rubber edge of the bumper just digs into any surface, I love it.

Plus everyone who has seen my phone with the bumper installed thinks its not a case but actually part of the phone. I agree with them, it looks very nice.

Sorry about your phone. Good for you and Apple on getting it fixed.

1 man's misery is another's affirmation of casing his iPhone

Sorry everybody, but I returned it. They sent me a new one free of charge, however if I didn't return my broken one try would have charged me. They took my CC info during the phone call. When I peeled off the invisible shield there were tiny glass particles everywhere but all he other broken glass pieces stayed stuck to the phone. At least they used great adhesive.

I wonder for how long Apple will give people new phones with cracked glass? 30 days? 1 year? Forever? At what point does it lose coverage and become user error?

Mine was totally user error. I was totally honest with them an said it was totally my fault but I was just a little dissapointed that the first time I drop the phone it shattered. I explained how I've randomly dropped all my other cell phones and have had no probs but the first time I drop this this it's shattered. I was cool and honest with apple and they totally were cool to me.

Update on Free Back Glass Replacement and Cost for Back Panels

Hi All,

I just joined the forum after searching for info on how to get the cracked back glass on my iphone replaced.

I know it's been some months since this thread was active but if anyone wants updated info here it is.

I cracked my back glass on my iphone4 which was less than 30 days old. It was a slight drop that did not damage the phone in anyway, just the back glass cracked. As another poster here did I took it into the local Apple store and the fellow there took a look and said he could replace the glass in about 10 minutes at no charge. He told me the back glass and the front glass are two different strengths and the back cracks easier. Even though he didn't come right out and say it, I think Apple sees this as a design flaw and they have been taking care of the issue for buyers with phones less than 30 days old.

They also have addressed the issue for owners of phones older than 30 days. You purchase a new back glass replacement for only $29. That beats the heck out of some of the prices I saw quoted on here.

So that's the latest info I have and I wanted to share it with you all.

Cheers!

Is the $29 back replacement in writing on Apple's site anywhere? I cracked mine yesterday and want to be sure I know what I'm talking about before I go to the apple store. Is the warranty maintained? Thanks!

It is not bad for a $30 replacement.

Dropped my iPhone 4, back shattered.....

Dropped it from a height of about 3/12 feet onto concrete patio. No case. Back panel was history. Person at Genius bar told me it would cost $29 to have it fixed. ( Phone is about 6 months old). I figured this was a great deal, since I'm the one who dropped it. I took it in today, they fixed it for free! Took all of ten minutes. Very happy customer. :)

I went in yesterday fully prepared to pay the $29, but instead walked out with a brand new (well, refurb) iPhone for free. Very happy customer :)
