I do find it scary that Apple has somewhat of a history of making stuff that catches fire...

I'm not sure about a history of fire, but there have been a series of battery problems, one of which is overheating. THIS however is not a battery problem from what I can see.

Ever since the iBook years ago, people have had super-heated battery complains. All events were not universal, but some people got badly made batteries or had charging problems that would heat up the device. Not sure if any have actually caught fire in those heat events.

It looks like the connector caught on fire, not the iphone itself.

Wow...such brilliance around here. The phone is made of steel and glass...the connector plastic. If the USB port inside the phone the heat would only leave black marks on the steel and melt the plastic. Why is this such a hard concept?

I noticed the other day that my phone was not charging. When my husband went to see if the plug came out (it has a history of doing so), he asked me if it was also extremely hot. I felt it, and said no. I told him to immediately to take it out.

The plug was in all the way, and it was not charging. The phone itself was hot, but not too bad. The cord was one that came with my 3G and never gave me any problems.

It couldn't be caused by misuse...

With 100's and 100's of millions of iPods and iPhones having been shipped, what is the chance that one of the contributors to:

...did something creative with their iPhone USB power cord?

i remember My 3GS getting hot.. but not anything insane... HOWEVER..

my new Iphone 4 has gotten ridiculously Hot while plugging in my BELKIN car charger/tuner.. the metal antenna around it gets crazy! it almost feels like the heat is coming from between the GLASS and metal frame..

Scared me the first time I grabbed it.. I thought I was going to be electrocuted
anyone else noticed this??

You're obviously grabbing it wrong! :D

No heat issues here.

Yes, mine gets hella hot while charging. It hasn't caught fire yet, though.

Every year. Every year.

Lol, I was telling my brother that last night when he told me about this story. I was like, every year a new iPhone comes out, a story about how it catches fire also comes out.

For everyone's reference, here is a nifty list of "my iPhone did this" that occurs every year:

1 - Scratched
2 - Cracked
3 - Burned
4 - Exploded
5 - Made me breakfast

LOL :D

Same here, which makes me to believe that this won't of course be the first incident of this happening.

Just about every Apple product has burst into flames in someone's hands, or on the table.

Dig deeper into the world that is Google. There has been cases of either the battery bursting into flames, or the power adaptor.

Let's put this into perspective, for all those "Oh, it was only the cable" guys that are actually trying to defend their beloved iPhone.....

ALL ELECTONICS HAVE UNITS THAT FAIL.

So, stop being defensive, stop trying to blame it on the cable, nobody is saying the iPhone is anymore likely to blow up than your laptop is. It's just one story of one phone that makes for interesting conversation, nothing more. Just accept that one iPhone caught fire due to some faulty USB connection. It's no big deal.

If you have seen a real explosion (instead of the fake movie explosion) you would know how silly that claim is.

I suggest you watch Mythbusters.

But the iHaters are too blind to see that.

blind to see what? that apple phone caught fire? or that apple's connector caught fire? or that apple's connecter connected to apple's phone caught fire?

It wasn't the phone?

It doesn't look like the phone is the thing that actually caught fire.

My wife had the same problem with her 3gs a while back. She plugged it into our iMac to charge and it came up with a warning that the device was drawing too much voltage. When she tried to unplug the phone from the computer sparks shot out and the charging cable immediately caught fire.

The phone did not seem damaged, but Apple was happy to replace both the phone and the cable right away.

it looks like the phone has a screen protector on it. (look a the home button)
How come it doesn't look like it's suffered any damage from it. I would have thought the plastic on the screen protector would have shown some sort of signs of melting.

Maybe this is a hoax like some else said. Someone just melted the cable and put char marks on the phone?

Maybe, maybe not. Who knows...

Guy: 'I like to melt stuff, and hey, free replacement!'

I would not be astonished.
