I wonder what the stats are for with and without a bumper?

Probably because of the antenna-gate "issue", I see a lot more i4's in bumpers when traveling about.

1.6% of 1,000,000 phones = 16,000 phones
16,000 x ~$500 phone = $8,000,000

Care to pay the difference on that "statistical dead heat"?

If it truly is a statistical dead heat, the difference might actually be in the other direction due to the standard deviation of the measurement error. Thus the "payor" could potentially make a profit on your deal.

My iPhone 4 was part of that 2.1% malfunction statistic. My iPhone 4 only 4 months old with nary a scratch, never been dropped and was in pristine condition yet my power/sleep button failed.

Took it to an Apple store and they promptly replaced it with the only question being "did you drop it?" in which case I replied does it look like it has ever been dropped? The phone was in like new condition and even if I did drop it why would I admit it! I can think of one reason why my button failed, though they never asked. My phone was jail broken and I habitually pressed the power/sleep button in double press combinations with Activator, but I would hardly call it extreme usage.

The genius said that the failed power/sleep button was the first one he had seen on an iPhone 4, thought he has heard of it happening on older model iPhones. He also noted that failed home buttons are much more common.

Interesting issue

Ironic...iPhone 4 has just about the worst accident record despite being the only phone that came with a protective case during most of the survey period. Frightening to think what it would have been without the extra protection.

yeah i shattered the back of mine since i got my 4 launch day.
But im getting a yellow back for it as a replacment so im happy:)

I am surprised that no one mentioned the higher amount of use the iPhone gets. I sleep with my iPhone (or at least I fall asleep with it). I am certain the number of hours per week of used far exceeds the rest of the industry's phones. That probably skews the results to Apple's disadvantage.

The damage argument of this is moot because too many times have I walked into an Apple store and seen some lesser human of society there with his / her mbp at the genius counter with food stains even food still stuck to keys, snot over the screen and he wonders why his **** doesn't work. Well duh you treat it like garbage.

Often I see people comparing mac to pcs saying they are like normal cars to fararis etc and this is exactly the case for the iphone4. It is made with elegance but you gotta look after it thats why people make cases. It takes a huge knock to crack glass and banging the iphone on a hard surface is not the way you use the phone. User error, user sloppiness and not Apple's fault.

If your iphone is cracked obviously you are not taking enough care of your things and stop using your xbox 360 as a damn drink coster and using your toes to push buttons on it lol disgusting other half of this race

A year ago before I got my iphone I was at my friends place. I pulled out my phone (some kind of nokia cant remember the model number but i had had it for about 3 years) and my friend looks at my phone and goes oh you got a new phone!!! and i said haha what i have had this for 3 years. I give him a look and he is like i cannot even find one scratch it is like it is brand new how did you keep is so protected for 3 years. I showed him my tiny little fabric case and said I just don't mistreat it i look after it and that is exactly what sloppy people need to realise. if you wanna fork out the cash for something nice and keep it nice you gotta fork out the responsibility too.

What's your point? That is't OK to make phones out of glass? If you like glass phones you might want to stick with iP4 because it might become the only glass phone in history :p

If your iphone is cracked obviously you are not taking enough care of your things … i look after it and that is exactly what sloppy people need to realise.

One day, despite all your best efforts, you will drop your precious phone and realise that you're not above the millions of other people who occasionally drop things. When you do, don't forget to apologise to all the people you slagged off as 'sloppy' and 'disgusting'.

That's how I felt after years of owning iPhones. Then I bought an iP4. I promptly put it in a silicon case. I was careful with it. After less than a month I dropped it from waist height and it broke. You correct that careless people are more likely to break their phones. However, when a specific model of phone is fragile, like the iPhone4, it is more likely that the phone will be damaged by people who are careful.

Bottom line: Apple rules, and can't help if people are clumsy. :D

Well, no. I've not dropped my iPhone 4 but it was a bit of a poor design choice to put glass on both sides of the phone.

Wow, look at you, looking down on the 'lesser' humans of society! You must be a God, surely! Or just arrogant. And way to go with stereotypes, so everyone who drops their phone uses an Xbox 360 as a drink coaster and uses their toes to push buttons?

And that little anecdote about the nokia feels more like a cheesy commercial for a case than a real story. Either way its kinda sad.

Its Ferrari by the way.

Statistic lie

So You compare a 4 month phone with 12 months phones, nice! Then how doesn't appear a Nokia Phone, this company has like 40% of the global market!!!! MacRumors, AppleInsider is becoming a joke! Oh, and I want my update today as you folks said yesterday!!!!

The display glass, or perhaps the coating on the glass, scratches a lot easier on an iPhone 4, too, as compared to my original iPhone or my 3GS. Shallow scratches, not, like, ruts. But I can only see the scratches in light bright enough the phone display is washed out, anyway. And I still love the phone.

I should say, too, go take a look at the average iPhone or smartphone users phone (as compared to iPhone fans like us around here): they're all scratched like you wouldn't believe. I've decided, well, I update at minimum every two years. I'm just going to use the things, cycling, floating in the pool, on a ski slope, whatever. I can either really use the iPhone and get my money's worth or I can have a pretty thing in beautiful condition to stow away in a desk drawer two years from now. And I'm not a phone museum, you know?

excuse me

silly comment!

The device needs not to be made of shattering glass and almost explode on impact when hitting a hard surface... Bottom line is... in the future the device will be a scratch, shock and splash proof. Cant wait till you drop yours or do you not lead a busy life?

apologies for the rant but yes I have dropped mine before.

Sheesh... Talk about glass houses.... I don't even know why I am bothering responding to this post. Your post only reveals how young, naive and limited you are. With that said and following the limited temporal frame of your argument I shall spew more nonsensical gibberish.

I have a 6 year old Quad core Power Mac G5, in mint condition and still very usable. Of course it's in mint condition!! It never moves and has sat in the same position in an immaculate air filtered room for the past 6 years. On the flip side I have a MBP that is only 18 months old that has some dents, dings, scratches, and a 20%+ decline in battery life over some 300 plus cycles. But then again this MBP has been in 9 different countries and has gone around the globe. And of course it has a hardshell case and travels in both neoprene and leather cases.

I also got a 2.5 year old iPhone 3G that looks like crap cosmetically and has been dropped a couple dozen times yet I have never had a problem with it. On the other hand I had an iphone 4 that was only 4 months old in pristine condition fail on me.

I could go on and on with other straw-man like arguments about many things much more important in life like education, personal relationships, real estate, cars, etc... But in the end there are many ways to skin a cat and I think you yourself will even be laughing about one of the dozens of cell phones, and other consumer electronics that you will own in coming decades. :D

I know someone who intentionally abuses his cell phone. Throws it against walls and such. He is self-aware of the fact and its consequences, so he accepts his phone is not cosmetically perfect and when selecting a phone chooses one which is as rugged as hell and of a form factor more suited to intentional abuse, a clamshell.

Needless to say, this relatively large segment of the population should NOT own an iPhone. However the fact there is no "ruggedized" option iPhone also eliminates Apple on its own choice from that segment of the population.

Since this segment replaces hardware at their own expense without whining due to their intentional abuse, one would think that might be a market opportunity for Apple.

Rocketman

Cases and Causes? Accident Rate, is it the Chicken or the Egg?

"The report claims that Apple's retail stores are not stocking slide-on cases for the iPhone 4 as the company works to thoroughly evaluate each case design at a secret testing facility. The delay in availability is affecting a number of case manufacturers, many of whom rely on Apple's retail stores as their largest distribution channels."

Apple's retail store's not stocking slide-on cases for "secret testing" doesn't seem to be doing any of the accident prone iPhone users any favors. I have had a case on mine since I got it, and there have been numerous times that I am sure that the phone would have bust into pieces if it wasn't protected.

So many people were waiting for their free covers that they missed out on the reality that any Smartphone needs more care than the traditional flip did. So, pony up the dough and get a high quality case. If you do it right the first time, it can save you time and money in the long run. And with anything, be sure you clean it regularly and check the case for cracks, bubbles, etc.

I got mine from Marware and it has been amazing for the last 2 years. Do you own research, but I think slide-on cases aren't to blame for the damage or high accident rates, I think being a normal person and dropping your phone on the ground a hundred times in a year, is.
