No, no, no mon frere.

You must understand the underlying technologies in both displays to make an informed decision.

Samsung uses Pentile matrix technology in their displays, which is quit inferior to the display tech Apple chose to go with (LG manufactured).

Inaccurate colour reproduction (greys look more like pink) and not a true resolution of 480X800 (392x653) is the effective resolution)
Nice try, but you're not even close.

You fail... to supply the data to support your claim of one technology being inferior to the other.

Nor do you cite the specific technology used by Apple.

Samsung's screen is nice and bright. That is a big plus and I do like the phone. I will say that it looks like an HDTV on "display mode" because the colors are neon-ish. The greens have a touch of the antifreeze look. I kept looking at it expecting someone to offer a calibration on it. ;)

That's not to say that the Retina display couldn't be 'improved'. It's hard to image that you could improve it but it would be interesting to see what the Retina display would look like merged with an OLED screen.

I find both my iPhone 4 with it's IPS display, and my Captivate / Galaxy S with it's Super AMOLED display, quite nice. They are simply different in appearance because they are two distinctively different technologies.

I have three different workstation class ThinkPad laptops that use IPS displays (identical to the iP4, just larger). They've been the favorite display by those of us in 3D Aerospace design for years. Unfortunately they were discontinued a few years ago due to cost, and market dynamics.

The screen is phenomenal. The display coupled with the new camera (both still and motion) is out of this WORLD!

The new edition of MacWorld, the cover was shot with the iP4 camera. Unreal! And their photog usually uses a Phase 60 megapixel camera for his article shots. He was amazed at the quality of the iP4.

I make my mortgage with Audio/Video/Still production. Being able to put high rez images on the phone, and show them...display them...I've even signed a couple of contracts over the last few weeks using the iP4 and iPad as a living place for our portfolios...again, both still and motion. Clients are utterly amazed, and the "Cool" factor is a big part of it. Most will ask to play with the phone a bit after signing the contract:) I oblige.

I've owned all 4 phones. iP4 is awesome...and the number one catch is that display. I know when I turned mine on the first time, it almost looked like a graphic painted, or overlayed on the top of the phone. It's amazing.

Oh I'm sorry I forgot you live under a rock.

I'm pretty sure everyone and their dog knows that its IPS LED backlight.

You enjoy your crappy pentile matrix superamoled display.

I chose "It's really neat, but you don't have to spend 200$ just for this.". It's great but it's not killer feature that would convince me to buy one.

But then again we don't have cheap iPhones on contracts over here. Only unlocked ones at full price without a contract. So the situation is different. Minimal cost for a retina display here is €640(16GB) or €750(32GB). At those prices you really need more than just a nice display to win you over ;)

Hello guys, I'm very curious about this. I currently own an iPhone 3GS and had a 3G before. So I don't know what to say about the iPhone 4's Retina Display, since I haven't seen one in person, cause the iPhone 4 isn't available in my country yet.
Just wanna know if the screen is a true reason to upgrade.
Feel free to post your iPhone 4 vs iPhone (3GS,3G,2G) screens side by side, just to tell the difference.

I've had a chance to compare side-by-side in a telco shop, a IP3Gs and IP4. The difference is like heaven vs earth.

Following is the pic i took (left is IP4 & right is IP3Gs). This pic dun really depict the actual difference but u should still be able to see some diff :)

Some like the green tint in the middle of screen some don't. If you don't look at it from the side. Look at it this way not that way

The Retina display is sweet. In my opinion however apple needs to start making a bigger display and that constitutes offering multiple models as from all the discussion about this topic size does matter for some. I can only hope that they take this approach for the next rev but I'm not going to hold my breath.

The screen is really, really nice. But i'd say it alone is not worth upgrading.

But...add on the awesome still and HD video camera, more than worth it. Add in facetime...better processor...yes.

Especially when you can sell your old phone for close to the price of the new one and it's a total no-brainer. But even if you couldn't it's still more than worth it.

Don't get me wrong, I love the clarity of Apple's display. However in typical Apple fashion, if you buy into their line of propaganda "Apple's Retina Display Is Revolutionary". This claim is totally false, to be kind. Apple simply slapped on the label "retina" then spun the story. The true name of this technology is "IPS" and it's been around for years. I have three ThinkPad laptops with 15" IPS displays. They are just as impressive as my iPhone 4. It's nothing new. It's extremely rare for Apple to offer any new technology. What they excel at is deception and marketing others creations as their own.

I don't care what they call it or how they market it. I have a 1080p 15" laptop and a 55" LG 240 hz LED, both of which have a beautiful picture, and yet, the retina display offers the crispest picture I've ever seen, and it's on a PHONE.

Let them hype, it lives up to it.

I like it but it's not what I'd have upgraded for (it's basically a nice extra but honestly the screen on the 3G was nice enough in my opinion).

I think the better camera and better GPS are far better improvements honestly (as well as the speed but I'm coming from a 3G so even a 3GS would be an improvement there). The screen is nice but it really doesn't give the iphone any extra functionality, just makes it nicer to look at. The camera/GPS/ and even speed give it more functionality and therefore are the selling points to me.

great if you have good vision

With a Retina display at 12 inches away, the dots will completely fuse if your vision is between 20/20 to 20/40. If your vision is worse than 20/40, the dots will be blurry on an i4 and will fuse on a 3GS as well, so the difference isn't really that great for that eyesight.

Not sure what percentage of the population has vision worse than 20/40... it appears to be legal for daylight driving in some locales.

But I think the i4 display is great when wearing my reading glasses, even though they correct my near vision to better than 20/20.

I upgraded my wife to the 4 and I'm on the 3GS... Now I'm always using her iPhone when we're out. I may upgrade soon. My 3GS is just a bummer now. :(

The Retina display is very nice. It easily beats the screen on my N1. But compared to other high end android phones, its only better by a small amount.

For a display that resolution it really should have been 4". It's a lot easier to do and see stuff on a bigger screen even if its at lower res.

I could not agree more.

In my opinion the iPhone 4 should have a 4.0" display. Apple excels at excellent design while keeping the footprint to a minimum size. The 4" display would only increase the iPhone's size a few mm and the advantages are too many to list.

I know, I've been using a Samsung Galaxy S for a month. It's less than 4mm wider, only 5mm longer & 0.4pm thicker. Even at this slightly larger size it's 25g lighter with it's all metal body and all glass front.

I would not upgrade for the screen alone, but then again I would not upgrade for any of the handful of reason to do so. It is the incredible combination of them all. :D My favorite thing is probably its physically size and shape. Feels so right.

In all honesty the old iPhone/iPod touch screen (480 x 320 or whatever) had decidedly low pixel density. Like, really low. It was worse than similarly-marketed Blackberries & Android phones, and even worse than some nonsmartphones (which of course have smaller screens). Since the iPhone has such a large screen I think its only fair to expect it to have a higher pixel density. In the end the Retina Display is much nicer than any other display I've ever used, mobile or not. It sort of makes you wonder why they couldn't have done a screen upgrade with the 3G or 3GS. Even the old Blackberry Bold 9000 has a pretty high pixel density, close to the Retina Display (even if only due to its small screen).

I was considering getting an Android instead of an iPhone 4, but I don't want a larger phone. It seems that all of the premier Androids are following the 4"+ trend, which left the iPhone as best phone at a size I was comfortable with.
I find it funny that 0.5" brings "too many advantages to list" yet the iPad has an extra 6.2" and gets dismissed as being just a big iPod Touch.
