Just tried using a key to bridge the gap... no loss of signal at all. Bars have been fluxating when holding in my hand, but nothing detrimental.

Yeah metal does not seem to make them drop like my hand does, that does hold out a bit of hope for a "firmware adjustment" to fix the fluctuation....

I also just tried with 24K Gold (very conductive) and it didn't change things at all.

Does anyone's 4G gets warm? Mine gets pretty warm in the back and on the side after using it for awhile. quite annoying, and the only thing I can think of is to get a case so I don't feel the heat (hope it won't have heating issues).

Nonetheless, this phone is sweet!! fast, responsive, crystal clear. coming from a 3G, I don't know how I can go back to that phone.

People blaming AT&T can stop. This is being reported in all regions now. It's the phone.

In any case this is stupid.

Your top-of-the-line, REVOLUTIONARY phone will only work properly with a cheap rubber case.

This is ridiculous. I can't believe people think this SOLVES the problem and they are OK with it.

I completely agree!!!

As a lefty, all I can say is f**k Apple on this issue. I am the biggest Apple fan you will run into, but come on! This is total BS.
I'm a southpaw too, but in Apple's defense (this is not a day I'd pick for defending Apple, but whatever), I think they care about lefties more than most companies do. Their mice have always been symmetrical. Logitech and Microsoft never cared much about lefties, nearly all of their mice are tailor made for righties. Logitech has ONE model for lefties (I'm talking about their 'big' mice now, not the tiny ones for laptops... those are usually symmetrical) and it's a crappy midrange model. It only got made because the CEO requested it (Logitech's CEO is left handed).

I am going to give them a few days, if they do not announce a fix/recall I am calling my credit card company for a refund... I think I have 30 days (going to check that now) I will NOT accept a "Rubber thong" as a fix, they should have kept the antenna covered in plastic/glass if this was a big problem.

Got my iPhone in London, on O2, and yes i have the same problem.

Calls to me are going straight to Voicemail.. Reception is fluctuating like crazy.

Not good. Sort it out Apple.

UHM.... from southern Germany here on T-Mobile and I have this issue. The support guys told me their Apple case would fix this. WTF! I'm returning this piece of crap and will get out of my contract at any cost.

I waited to upgrade my phone and now this. They also said they can't tell me when they would get replacement units and it could take several weeks....

Thank you Apple! So my only option would be to buy the Apple condom they sell. But partly of why I bought the phone was the design and I do not plan to put it in a rubber sleeve and I do not plan to give Apple more money for shipping a broken product.

Agree - i am going to wait until next week though to see what apple has to say. The people you are talking to on the phone are not engineers and are only telling you what they know (nothing).

If apples response is that i need to use a case, i will return.

A: I am shocked Apple testing didn't pick up on this. Maybe the Bay area has too many AT&T towers so Steve J remains happy?

A recent study on data speeds showed that the best ATT data speeds were on a road right behind Apple HQ. Apparently ATT put up a tower to make sure they have perfect signal all the time :)

I think one of the posters over at Apple's forums summed it up nicely:

"For all these Apple defenders, we'll never be able to convince them Apple may have made a design flaw. They'd rather believe God made a design flaw in our hands that is blocking the signal to their perfectly designed Apple product and demand a redesign of our hands..."

This indeed is the biggest mystery so far...

It was picked INSTANTLY by hundreds (thousands!?) of people yet Apple testers failed to see any problem!?!?!

Perhaps it is some sort of manufacturing error rather than the design itself since otherwise it just makes no sense at all...

For all those who think AT&T is the problem it is not. I'm on T-Mobile in Germany and if you check youtube you will see examples from networks all over the world. The engadget guy is on O2 in the UK. Major screw up Apple.

Sure man - but comon... Testers should be located all over the world and should be running the device through highs and lows... I am positive they didn't just sit at Cupertino

Someone on Gizmodo suggested putting a little nail polish where you would bridge the gap. That sounds like it might actually work. I may try it when I get home later...

Calm down folks, geez...

Calm down my friends, it's a simple fix and there's going to be a recall. You send the iPhone 4 back to Apple, and they will repair it by attaching a rubber bumper -- your choice of color. A $29.95 value!

But they may have all used cases to disguise the phone they were using, which would have masked the issue.

This. People say the reason they didn't pick up on this is because they were using the cases that masked them as 3GS's. There's no way someone didn't think up the use case of using the phone WITHOUT a case. I feel like they must have tested it. Then again, maybe they did test, but just didn't do a very good job. idk, I'll wait it out.

I didn't want to believe it...until I watched video.

Then I tried it here at my desk in NYC....full bars, 3G.

4 calls in a row....held in left hand. All were Call Fails within 20 - 48 seconds of holding.

I don't want those bumpers.

Wow...this is embarrassing if true.
