Remember that iPhone 4 prototype that was left in the bar? It was reported that it had this plastic thing around it so it would look like an normal iPhone 3GS.

That was their field test and maybe they didn't even notice the issue because the phone was always hidden in that plastic-camouflage thing and nobody came to touch the metal underneath it.

Just my 2 cents...

Since they designed the break between the two antennas to stop conduction between them there is no chance that they didn't realize that a person holding the phone could make a connection with their body.

So, I called Apple.

They told me to buy a bumper, and that it is the only solution. I asked why they weren't giving them out for free, and the (quite snotty) CSR told me it wasn't her problem.

REALLY?

Jesus tittyf'in Christ, you're in the PHONE business. When your PHONE doesn't make PHONECALLS because you're left handed, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE RELEASED THE PHONE!

I think honestly im starting to beleave this is a problem in hardware!

I had an old nokia phone 3210 i think, with express on covers years ago! and if you left the back off and caught the antenna metal strip the signal used to drop off because it was not set in ceramic like the new nokias! I was on orange UK network as the time and there signal was excelent back then!

So exposed stainless steal is almost the same effect! all I can see they can do is recall them and laminate the stainless to make it non conductive or change it out for plastic and put a strip antenna behind!

This is definitely a hardware issue, the person is simply physically touching the phone causing it to drop signal.

I disagree. I've done some more testing and had consistent results. The signal drops out completely in built up areas, but not in more rural areas. This indicates it is a software issue to do with the cell you are connected to rather than a hardware fault.

I just spoke to iPhone Tech Support. They are aware of the problem. The guy suggested getting a new SIM card from AT&T and then doing a restore on the phone....may solve the problem.

Basically, they have no real idea.

Wow...... just wow.

I actually can't reproduce this. The bars bounce around but in every attempt, I haven't lost a call or anything.

I didn't have the problem at home (strong signal) but i do at work. I am on the phone with Apple right now. The lady told me that they are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. She recommended that i use a case in the short term and i told her i didn't want to buy a case. I am in a hold loop now....will let you know the result.

I'm going to make a video for people who think this is not a hardware issue. I have 5 bars while its laying on 4 different tables. As soon as I pick it up it drops to 1-0.

Yet another reason not to be left-handed (as if being similar to Obama in ANY way wasn't enough before).

Neat part? I'm only half-way kidding.

Hmm, we have the bars dropping issue at home but when my wife went to complain at the Apple Store at Montgomery Mall (MD) she was unable to replicate the issue there. So it's a signal strength issue?

I'm so glad I don't work at AppleCare any longer... and the store for that matter. This BS is too much to try and put some type of Apple spin on. I'd tell people this is some pretty ****ed up stuff and to wait on purchasing.

Jezuz... That is some nice service there! :(

I live in a rural area. Horse farms for miles and miles! The signal drops for me.

This thread is just annoying cause no one is really trying to narrow anything down to determine if there is a real difference between those who have the problem and those that don't.

I asked a friend who got his iPhone 4 today to try and replicate the problems in this thread. He was unable to accomplish a signal drop...but I'm sure that'll just be blamed on good signal or less conductive skin instead of seeking details that might show it was from a different batch or something from the ones that seem to so easily replicate the problem.

I swear people don't know how to properly troubleshoot and it drives me nuts in situations like this.

I've yet to see that anyone has even tried a clean restore because everyone is so convinced that CAN'T be it without ever even testing it.

Do I think a restore will fix it? Nope...but do I know for sure? Nope...so test it instead of making assumptions people.

Could be some people are not bridging the contact long enough. I know on mine it takes awhile (~ 15 -20 seconds) before the bars start dropping and then they start dropping one by one with about 10-20 seconds between each. (not officially timed - estimates). WOuld be easy to measure though to produce real data.

Hi guys, I got my Iphone 4 since yesterday and I have no yellow tinting or scratches yet but I do have the following:

I hope this can be fixed through software but I really doubt it.
This looks more like a hardware issue, the whole antenna thing was a great idea but in the end

Holly crap : o

But you didn't even cover bottom part of it...!!!

Hmmmmm...

This increasingly smells of full recall to me :s

On my iPhone 3GS if I have 1 bar it would be very hard to have a phone conversation. On my iPhone 4 with 1 bar, my conversation is perfect as if I had more bars.

If the phone loses that bar and states no service it must send some sort of signal to the phone which kills the call. (even if you are still receiving a signal the software ends the call because the software registered no signal)

If there is a software fix that fixes the sensitivity of the signal meter then this problem would be resolved.

This is why I am stating that there is a very reasonable chance that this may appear hardware related but in fact can be software related. So before you all jump off a bridge lets wait to see what Apple responds with.

Unless your tables are located in different houses some distance apart and you know the surrounding cells you will prove nothing other than you can make a video and post it online.

I can confirm that with my new Incipio Silacrylic case, this doesn't happen anymore. Must be the energy produced by our fingers bridging or shorting something.

As my signal hits 2 and then 1 bar the call quality is awful and data rates degrade.

I can attest that my iPhone 4 is showing this exact same issue. Apparently mine is partly due to what tower I'm on. At home, after I read about this problem before getting ready for work, I tried replicating it with both my hand/fingers, and a coin, but it wouldn't my signal wouldn't fluctuate no matter how long I held the short(I always show full bars at home, and the tower is literally a quarter mile from my house). Now that I'm at work, and on a different tower, but still only about a half a mile from it (the tower I'm using..still showing full bars), my phone signal starts dropping INSTANTLY when I short out the lower left gap with either my hand or a coin. So could it possibly have something to do with the tower/band the phone is utilizing? I know that the tower I'm on at home utilizes the 850Mhz band, but I'm not sure about the one at work.
