But by all accounts, by doing this, when held properly, the iphone 4 has better RF than the 3GS.
How do you hold it properly?

If this is working 'as intended' this is truly sad Apple; you have broken my heart.

I've noticed many phones (not iPhone) do this however, but the rate and to which signal it actually drops to is pretty amazing.

Maybe their algorithm is just messed and isn't reporting correctly. Lets hope, as that would be a software fix.

Went to my local apple store

I took my iPhone 4 back to the apple store today and man the line was crazy long. I went right in and bypassed the line and spoke with a Apple Genius. He replaced my iPhone not once, but twice. Both were suffering from the same issue as mine. We looked at 8 floor models and 7 of the 8 were experiencing the same issue. In the end I went home with the iPhone I received in the mail.

It's a body chemistry thing. -NOT ALL PEOPLE-

I work for an Apple Enterprise partner and we had a huge stock of these phones in-house today. We did a lot of testing and came to the conclusion that only certain people had this problem not certain phones.

I myself can't get my iPhone 4 to do this bar drop issueor any other iPhone 4 I touched today. I tried on over 10.

A co-worker had the issue with every iPhone he used.

At first he believed he had a bad phone and was planning on sending it back to Apple; but after he had the issue with even mine we realized it's not a per-phone issue but a per-person issue.

Regardless this is something Apple will need to fix. It's an issue with certain people's bodies conducting electricity better than others.

I see this is a never ending topic in here so I hope it's noticed.

Best quote ever? Jobs flying to NYC to hire hit man to 'eliminate' conducting iPHone users.

Seriously, most, but not all, iPhone users are probably planning to buy cases anyways. If you go naked, just mind the gap with your finger and you be find. As the joke goes, "Dr, my head hurts when I hit my head with a hammer. Dr: Well don't do that."

As Joe Stalin once said from Russia, " where there is a problem, there is a person. When there is no person, there is no problem"

Perhaps we will see a lot of films like the screen protectors coming out that just wrap around the metal bands to eliminate the problem without any bulk.

But you will still affect the RF signal just by picking up the phone, as any phone has this 'issue'

There are actually people who have this sort of effect on electronics. Years ago we had an employee we affectionally called the "watch woman" because she couldn't wear a watch (maybe we should have called her "no-watch"). Even wind up watches would stop on her wrist. Strangest thing I've ever seen. Every typewriter assigned to her broken within a week.

Perhaps this new phone is more sensitive to those who exhibit even mild forms of electrical interference. I think some of us need to get together and write a grant request to study this phenomenon. That ought to be worth a few million stimulus $$$. :)

Cheers,

Lol, the fact that some people, though not many, are actually defending this is absurd! I really feel bad for owners, cuz the Iphone 4 is obviously one of the best phones in the market. This issue, however is inexcusable. But the fact that people will still buy the phone en masse and make excuses for it, speaks to apple's following. This, more than anything, show's Steve Jobs the power he has over those that love his products. He actually believes that people should hold their phones differently because his product is that magical. And yes, I know he didn't send the email. But whoever did was authorized by him to speak on his behalf, so until proven otherwise, he supports this belief as well.

Are you kidding me? You're making excuses for this problem? WOW! Whats your excuse for malfunctioning brakes?

This is fascinating. Apparently, I'm one who does not attenuate the signal while holding the phone.

Perhaps, a thin laminate can be applied to the bottom section for those who do have an issue, and do not wish to sport a case or bumper.

Hoping my Wrapsol Ultra might do the trick but I don't want to put it on yet since there's a chance I'll be swapping out this phone:mad:

Of all the theories I've read, that makes the most sense to me, based on Apple's limited human field testing and the likelihood that it's not a QA variance between builds.

The only downside of this result, is that Apple might have no remedy until the next redesign of the externals (think nex-gen model comes out), except to provide bumpers to those affected.

What a bummer.

Here's an update video:

iPhone 4 still drops calls w/ replacement, but a case helps + more details
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUMn7CEAtmw

I have a replacement coming and now I think I wasted my time. I think all the iphone 4's work the same. I got in the habit of how to hold the phone....with pinky finger at the bottom and keeping my palm off the lower left corner. Just something I will have to get used to. Some people who do not emit those electrical impulses (or whatever) should be happy they don't have to adjust and learn a new way to hold a phone.

Frankly I'm spent and ready to just **** it. I'm a stupid fanboy so I'll keep it and deal with it. Hopefully third time is a charm, but I'm not holding out hope.

looks like the 3GS lost a bar when the lower right corner was covered by his hand, even though he said it was fine with no degradation.
