iPhone 4 Drops Calls when Left Corner is Touched

I'm not having this problem with mine. I can hold it any way

Same here.

Apparently, this is not a symptom of all units.

I'll be passing mine around to colleagues to test it further.

So far, calls are great, not to mention all the other features.

looks like the 3GS lost a bar when the lower right corner was covered by his hand, even though he said it was fine with no degradation.

I don't dispute the 3GS loses signal when handled. I did a video on it.

The problem is the iPhone 4 drops calls. The 3GS does not.

This is fascinating. Apparently, I'm one who does not attenuate the signal while holding the phone.

Perhaps, a thin laminate can be applied to the bottom section for those who do have an issue, and do not wish to sport a case or bumper.

Exactly. Looks like all thats needed is something non conductive placed over the bottom of the phone. Thin plastic. Even a plastic film. Plastic coating.

Amazed that he said to hold the phone differently.

i'm just sort of upset that isn't a software issue as reported earlier. I mean, if sj's official response is to hold it a different way then...

however i've been on the phone all day and i've had not a dropped call yet. This thing is insane, and I came from the 3G!

I want to purchase an iPhone 4 but it's hard to make that decision now knowing that my body may be better at conducting electricity and will affect if I can use my phone normally for me.... really not cool.

Apple ***** up big time.

if apple made this so we would buy the bumpers we should be recieving bumpers for free with this phone

Even still this is like saying, "Buy these Nike shoes and you can play like Kobe!" and then saying, well, you will also need knee braces (a bumper) like Forest Gump and a retainer.

Your are lucky. Either you didn't give the phone a chance to drop the signal (it didn't seem long enough) or you don't have whatever it is in some bodies that triggers the failure. Thanks for sharing.

i woulda made it longer but the upload woulda took longer....no problem tres...

i think it does have to do with with how well the user bridges the electric current...you can take one finger and just touch it above and below the black line, and you can kiss that signal goodbye...thats all it takes for me

I tried recording a longer video and nothing....I keep all my bars and I hold it in all kinds of ways. I guess its the majority of phones...not each one of them.

The issue is often not apparent in areas with excellent reception. Anecdotal reports from earlier in the day pretty much confirm that. A good test would be to find a location where your phone gets less than full reception (maybe 3-4 bars) and try to see if you can replicate the issue.

You cant defend this. Next thing they'll tell us your toilet will only flush only if you sit down on your right cheek.

I was getting one, but not until this is fixed. You don't buy a porsche and live with the fact that it can't go up hill and be told to live in somewhere flat. You won't accept that then why would you accept this.

Even fanboy can't defend this. Unless they sell it as iPod touch.

Done that - still no problem with my phone's reception.

Incidentally, I see advantages to holding the phone upside down (speaker side up) while on a call.

1) It maximizes sound quality for both mic and speaker.

2) It maximizes antenna reception, by directing antenna upward (FCC required that the antenna's location be furthest from the head, hence its location on the bottom)

3) It allows you to hold the phone freely within your palm, hand, etc.

This way, RF interference is no longer a issue.

well I have to eat my words
I say that it was trolls in this site saying that they have problems

Well I replicate the problem from 5 full bars it will go to searching
and i am lefty i guest i need to get 2 covers for the phones

this have to be some big design overlook

And this is from 2 different iphone4 one 16gig and the other 32gig:mad:

Already tried doing that....and no bars lost as well.

No one is defending the fact that there is a MAJOR problem....it's well aware people are having issues with the phone. But there are those few exceptions based on other threads and my phone as well. But the problem is widespread. So calm down.

Just to add my cents to this. I do have this issue in certain locations but not at all in others.

This is purely speculation but when I am at home where I have a wifi network the issue is immediately obvious. Hold the phone in left hand to look at screen etc and cell reception rapidly drops as does WiFi connection. It is almost on/off with the wifi. Shift your hand very slightly and the connection is there, shift it again and the throughput drops to 0.

Having said that, at work where I have no wifi network I cannot replicate the cell reception problem at all. the bars are rock solid and do not drop however I hold or grip the phone.

If it is in some interference when both aerials are being used and then crossed it could make the killer app FaceTime rather more of a FacePlant but lets wait and see.

I suspect there is an element of apple guilt hysteria surrounding this issue brought on by the compulsive purchases of those who really shouldn't be spending this much money on a gadget and in the real world it probably won't have much of an impact however it is a bit of a booboo on the design front.

I'm going to reserve judgement until I've used the phone for a while. I expect they will at least try to mitigate the issue with a software update.

solution......wear these when making all calls.

I have one of those and they're not even useful as an oven glove! :D
